They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Boyle is a really intriguing matchup for tonight. The stuff is legit, and he added a new sweeper, but the command was always a question in the minors and after not showing those issues in his Sept SSS debut, he walked 15 this spring. This could be a breakout night for the offense, or a frustratingly "how did they leave 12 runners on and lose 3-2?"night
I think they'll score 4 in the 1st inning and be off in running, though

Boyle had a nice cup of coffee last September but he's had a grand total of 6 appearances, all starts, above AA.
In 27 AA starts, split between 2022 and 2023, he had a 4.81 ERA, and a 1.6 WHIP on 96 hits and 107 BB in 127.1 IP. Also 181 K (good for 12.8/9). Seems like the poster boy for big stuff but don't chase him out of the zone. Keeps the ball in the yard, though.
He had 19 K and 16 BB in 18.1 IP this spring, so it's not like he's turned a corner...

No pressure, Tanner, but all anyone can talk about is how incredibly well your four rotation-mates pitched in their first turn.
Was Houck even in Texas and Seattle or did he stay in the Fort and meet the club in Oakland?

Any word on Jansen’s status? This is going to be one of those years with him, isn’t it?

With most MLB starters having gone once so far Pivetta is T-1st in Pitching+, Whitlock 16th, Crawford 21st, Bello 45th

The Andrew Bailey effect. Some of this is also apparently game plan specific as Seattle struggles against offspeed moreso than most teams, or so I read. Curious to see if much changes during the Oakland series.

The Andrew Bailey effect. Wow even the difference between SF at 29 and Boston at 30 is huge. Makes me wonder if the 4 seam fastball is going to become a thing of the past unless the pitcher has an absolutely incredible FB hitters even in the minor leagues can catch up to one. There are hitters who can't hit a FB but they probably don't belong in MLB. The thing about emphasizing velocity reminds me of what Warren Buffet said about standing up at a concert. You get a better view until everyone is doing it. Or you could maybe compare it to a kid playing video games. My son got really good at a game called Tetris where things go faster and faster requiring almost instant decisions and he got to where he could unlock the dancing Russians using one finger while eating a doughnut with his other hand.

One thing that kinda sucks about this era of baseball is elite fastballs look exactly the same as meh fastballs to the naked eye

Guys walking that many batters at AA, usually do not make AAA, never mind the majors. I expect Casas and Yoshida to collectively have 5 walks.

It would never happen but I'd love to see a team just straight up not swing at this guy and see how many people he would walk anyway.

I saw the numbers...but a 20 grade...that feels almost cartoonishly bad. What does he tell his catcher? "the only thing i can tell you about the location of my next pitch is: it is not going wherever you put your glove" or "don't bother putting your glove down, i wont hit it anyways"

I could see a HS pitcher coming in with a 20 grade on their control but a major leaguer? Crazy that he's managed to make the majors even if for the A's.

The college and minor league K/BB numbers are pretty . . . uh . . . wild. www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=boyle-000joe

We're laughing, but if a guy made the majors with 20 control, well, I'm kind of impressed. What an inspiration.
