They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

With Pivetta coming back, other IL stints wrapping up, Uwasawa, Kelly, Ref on the team, and Grissom, Smith, Cooper, Short having replaced Perez, Valdez, Dalbec and an injured Yoshida, it seems heading to Atlanta with at least a 20-15 record is expected for this resilient team

A Houk start and Grissom debut adds a level of excitement to tonight's game. Almost opening day level excitement !!
Lets get another series win !!!
32-21 will be the Sox record if they win (and split the 2 gamer in ATL) every series in May. How cool would that be....

From 4/21 through 5/5, the Red Sox will have started Winckowski, Anderson, or Criswell in 8 of 13 games. So far they're 6-4 in the first 10 of those. If they can win one game in this series they'll have made it through two weeks with that ugly mess of a rotation with a winning record.

I’ll be happy with 2-3 against MIN and ATL on the road

The Twinkies are riding a 10 game winning streak. Houck will fix that.

The Twinkies are riding a 10 game winning streak. Houck will fix that. Would it be shocking to learn that of those 10 wins, 7 came against the White Sox? And the other 3 against the Angels.

I'm no longer entirely sure Criswell and "mess" should be in the same sentence. He just might be a legit starter, and what a pleasant surprise that is/would be.

I’m considering Criswell as our 5th starter. IF he’s pitching well. When, Pivetta, Bello and Whitlock are healthy. Love Garrett. But, his body/arm don’t seem to hold up as a starter. Better suited as set-up guy. IMO.

Better suited as set-up guy. IMO. Three weeks ago, I anticipated the first Criswell start with something like, "well, this is what you get when you don't add quality major league SP depth." Now, I see him opposite Joe Ryan and think, "solid match-up." I know it's early and that he could unravel quickly, but we can't complain when the guy who was slated as, what, the 8th starter on opening day is a pretty good bet to go five innings and keep them in the game.

If Whitlock is healthy they have to keep him in the rotation and send Criswell to AAA, if they put Whitlock in the bullpen they have zero depth if one of the other guys goes down. They can't sustain multiple bullpen days a week for long.
Also because Whitlock has really high upside as a starter and was pitching great.

Pivetta had a very rough rehab start, but if he has another, that's actually better regardless of how well he just pitched.
All the talk about his being ready for the Braves series turns out to make no sense. Right now we're set to have Crawford on 5 days rest and Houck on 4 -- if we insert Pivetta in there, Houck ends up pitching on six days rest, at home against the Nats rather than on the road against the Braves.
Give Pivetta another rehab start, on Tuesday, and he returns to MLB on the 12th. Bello has been reported to be having a rehab start on Tuesday and that seems to be a "why not?" decision given the two off-days in 4 days coming up; there's just no room for five pitchers.
If Bello starts on Monday, that would fit perfectly:
Houck opener TBD and Anderson Criswell --off--- Crawford (5) Houck --off --- Criswell Bello Pivetta (Nats)
Crawford (5) Houck (5) Criswell (Rays at hone)
... continuing on 4 days rest. Sox have 13 games without a break here, all against teams that are at present below average.
If Bello starts on Tuesday, Winck gets one more start and Crawford and Houck get 6 days rest, which is questionable.

There aren’t minor league games on Monday any longer. Agree about Pivetta not starting in Atlanta. Not optimal. Will be glad to see him and Bello back.

Per pre-game with Cora:
-Pivetta likely to rejoin the Red Sox starting rotation in Atlanta -Bello likely will need just one rehab start, which is Tuesday for Portland -Whitlock apparently will be doing a bullpen tomorrow
