OK, some beats still left in the heart. Need shut down relief in the Twins AB.

How does Houck have 4 ER? I'm only following the gamecast, but didn't the third batter reach on an error by McGuire? In that case Houck should only have 3 ER.

NOT a fan of bringing Houck back out after 6 innings and over 90 pitches. Agreed. At most you pull him when the first guy reaches.

Remember when Chapman was the only guy who got 100 with consistency.

no hits, 6 Ks between O'Neill and Abreu.
Guy who slings 103 against our lineup isn't remotely fair.

Things that may have made a difference tonight. 1. At least 1 run in the 1st. 2. A better play by McQuire in the 7th. 3. Uwasawa for mid inning relief ? Has he even done that before ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) Get them tomorrow...

Just taking a guess, but maybe it’s a similar scoring decision to not assuming the double play? McGuire’s error was an attempt at the lead runner on a sacrifice bunt.

The Twinkies are riding a 10 game winning streak. Houck will fix that. Or not.

Slaten was warming and they seem poised to go to him before Reese misplay of choosing not to get the out at first base. If Slaten comes in with a 1-0 game with 1 out and guys on 2nd and 3rd, maybe Minny still scores there, but definitely would have liked our chances. I’m guessing with the team forced to play the Chase Anderson roulette tomorrow, they were reluctant to burn Slaten if they were down a certain amount?

Not so sure there that you can assume McGuire would have goten the runner at second. The error caused the runner that scored to advance not the play itself. Situation, runners on first and second, sac bunt, McGuire attempted to get the runner at second and threw it into center field. Only runner that advanced was the one that ws on second and he would have eventually scored with or without the error. I believe that's proper. A secondary thought, last year and this year, when Houck leaves the game with runners on, those runners always score. Very strange. His actual ERA is better than it looks.

Not my favorite Cora game. The dead-certain dread I felt when Houck came out for the 7th...

With Houck, I think the takeaway is that he still falls off a cliff when he's done for the night. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that if the cliff is 90-100 pitches into a game. The coaching staff just needs to keep that in mind in the future because Houck was elite for 6 innings and taking that risk might have cost them the game. Didn't agree with bringing Houck out for the 7th, but don't hate it. It's a long season and I can understand why Cora would test Houck now.

Normally such a test could be beneficial, certainly in the long term. But IMO is unnecessary and unwise in a short term with 90 pitches into 0-1 game and without having his best stuff. Not a good time to experiment. Experiments should not so easily cost a game.

Duran CF, Devers 3B, O’Neill LF, Abreu RF, Wong C, Smith DH, Cooper 1B, Hamilton 2B, Rafaela SS
Scheduled off day for Grissom, per Cora. I’m glad they finally switched Hamilton to 2B instead of forcing him to play SS unnecessarily. Interesting flip of Smith and Cooper at DH/1B - would guess that’s so Refsnyder can more easily pinch hit vs lefties?

The Twins broadcast is elite. These guys are prepared and done their research about the opposing team: They talked about how Devers has shown a new plate discipline but he can't lay off the high fastball in 2 strikes counts. Watching the Twins broadcast today. They are fantastic.

Not a vintage Bernie opener job.
Nice recovery though - could have been much worse.
