Bello gets through 6 with just 3 runs when he clearly didn't have his best stuff today. I'll take it.

Probably should have gone home there.

Craig Breslow's special advisor saying he thinks batters should swing for the fences with two strikes I find this really interesting. I wonder how it accounts for swords vs. intentional swing-to-contact vs. swing-for-max-power. Swords I would think weigh down the slower swing portion of the graph, though probably not enough to change the end conclusion.

Game summary. Bello puts up a quality start in front of an offensive and defensive juggernaut, pen holds on for a series sweep.

Go figure....12-page game thread for a 3-game sweep of the Rays Where are all the posts saying this team has no heart and no hope & that Dom Smith should be stoned to death in the town square? Feels like something clicked for this team in that Roku St. Louis game…

Bello has not been pitching great this season Hmm. Maybe the Red Sox could have used Jordan Montgomery after all. Nice work fellas. Appreciate the reverse mojo. Worked so well for me yesterday I had to try it again

Grissom still isn't getting hits but he's basically looked fine to me the last few games. Tonight:
98mph flyout
HBP which would have been a walk anyway
K
101mph lineout

“The last time Boston brought out the brooms under the big top in St. Pete, the games included Michael Chavis’ major league debut and solid starts from Rick Porcello and David Price. Ryan Brasier secured saves in all three games” David Price struck out 10 guys in a game that would go 11 innings to complete the sweep. www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/TBA/TBA201904210.shtml

The Sox played a great series. Strong starting pitching. Solid offense. Duran was an ignitor.
When they play like that one can envision a team with 4 or even 5 starters one can be comfortable seeing get a post season start.
The lineup if Casas comes back healthy would greatly enhance the lineup. Hope that Grissom puts it together and perhaps get another RH power bat if Yoshida's thumb remains an issue.
Maybe Liam Hendriks comes back healthy and gives the Sox another reliable late inning reliever.
A competitive postseason team can be envisioned but so can a team that doesnt score enough runs and gives runs away on defense. .500 teams can tend to do this, give two distinctly different impressions and wind up in the middle of both.

The Sox' trouble with RISP literall started at game one ... . Before this series, they had been better with RISP than with the bases empty just 13 times of 47 games. They rolled into the Trop with a five game bad streak, the longest of the year.
In game 1 here? .197 wOBA empty and .910 with RISP, a .713 difference.
They did it again in game two, .292.vs. 413.
They are still looking for their first 3-game good streak -- something to look for tomorrow now that Raffy has proven to be human.
Tonight they were 1/18, 3 BB with the bases empty, and 6/12, 2B, HR with RISP.

Outside of SP, this is by far one of the most positive team developments so far this season. I’ll have to see if they can keep it up for the next of couple series, but if they do, watch out y’all — this team is dangerous.

As Refsnyder just said, this team has become fast and it’s making a difference. It’s not just Duran or even Duran and Rafaella. Suddenly (and surprisingly) it’s Duran, Rafaella, Hamilton, Abreu, O’Neill, Wong, Grissom. I bet Story would love to be part of this. So many doubles and triples. Exciting. Fun. Just like everyone predicted.
And these same guys have improved the Defense, which improves the already great (also just as predicted) pitching. Baseball is a hoot.

I love it ! I go on vacation and the Sox morph into this. I'm watching, not posting, but smiling. Too tired from kayaking every day!
I'll gladly stay on vacay if this keeps working! 😀

Cora alluded to this a bit in his post-game interview when he was asked about the team's speed/aggressiveness and he replied (paraphrased)...... I was thinking about that afterwards and wondering who he might have been talking to. I don't think it was the fans on SoxProspects. Could it be the front office that he might not be in full agreement with?

He was probably talking generally about fans who prefer the long ball instead of having a team that can use speed to manufacture runs rather than just swinging for the fences. I dont think it's some feud with the front office or anything like that. He could have been thinking about Duran who is jacked enough to smash 20 plus homers but is better off with middling power and using his athleticism instead.

Bello gets through 6 with just 3 runs when he clearly didn't have his best stuff today. I'll take it. You know I get so pissed off at the announcers. I know more is expected. But this kid was rushed through AAA. When your pitcher is not on his game your offense should pick up for him. To me this is a young team getting better every day.

Those are the types of starts that can differentiate average from good/great SPs. Just about every SP in the league worth anything can go out and win games when they have their best stuff working. It's the good ones that can manage to keep their teams in the game to pickup the W when clearly they don't have their A game that day.

You are probably correct and I am not trying to stir up a controversy that doesn't exist. However, I also recall that Cora had instructed Duran NOT to be aggressive on the bases (you're an everyday player) which was why he had only a couple stolen bases since the first week.....Was that a message from higher up that Cora didn't fully support, or perhaps he was just speaking to the players?
