Welp, next thing is to hope they can internal brace it and he's good to go in spring training.

You can never have too much pitching.
Houck, Crawford, Bello, Pivetta are going just fine. Criswell may or may not come back to earth.
Next year, Giolito and Whitlock will be back. Wincowski and Fitts are waiting in the wings.
Yet, for all of that, I look at the Sox roster and potential in AAA and more particulars in AA, and I keep wondering how Breslow will upgrade our pitching both through mid-summer trades and offseason moves. Because the potential for that exists, and you can never have enough pitching.

I’ve never seen a team hammered so hard by injuries

Dugas also did the internal brace for Giolito - to julyanmorley’s point hopefully it’s the same thing for Whit because the recovery time is so much less. Just brutal

Just brutal At the APTA combined sections meeting this winter in Boston, Dr. Dugas's PT Kevin Wilk gave a presentation on rehabbing TJ and theinternal brace with a lot of videos featuring Garrett. It sucks he'll be updating that presentation.

Despite the injury issues, this team hangs in there and deserves a significant acquisition to fill Whitlock's spot. So yeah, I am looking to see what Breslow can do in a somewhat back to the wall situation.

He just can't stay healthy as a starter. Hopefully he comes back as the closer in 2026. Very unfortunate.

It's easier to lose a BP arm than a starter. Wink is a decent spot starter at best. I don't think Pivetta will be back next season and hope they move him at the deadline. Considering the kind of years Montgomery and Snell are having they might be good deals. I would love for the Red Sox to flex their wallet and sign Corbin Burnes or Shane Bieber.

He's going to be coming off TJ and hasn't looked like the guy he was his first few years in a few seasons. Now maybe the TJ gets him back to looking like the early Bieber but they already have Giolito coming back from elbow surgery so I'm not sure how much appetite the Sox should have in allocating that type of money to the two of them. I would be all for taking a big swing at Burnes but not sure if Breslow and Co will necessarily see the need if Houck and Crawford continue to prove they are front of the rotation guys and Bello continues to improve to be a consistent 2/3 type guy. With Giolito coming back too I could see them going with more of a backend type guy with perhaps some upside once Bailey and Co. get their hands on them.

There are a lot of players that will need to be added to the 40 man, so I hope the Red Sox can will be buyers at the deadline even if not for anyone crazy. The lack of depth all around is wild for a team that isn’t too bad.

I knew he was out. Never mind on that one. Yeah, between him and Giolito you don't need two of those guys. I'd love to get Burnes because the rotation will be absolutely filthy while hurting a divisional opponent. With even more money off the books (17 million Sale, 7.5 Pivetta, 16 million Jansen) and having the luxury cap being reset to 0 I'm hoping they could get a stud arm and bat like Juan Soto. A man can dream.

I'm not sure I agree with the lack of depth argument. After all the Sox started the season with enough pitching that they have weathered the loss of Giolito, Pivetta for a while and now Whitlock so far with some possibilities behind them. In the outfield they have Refsnyder and any one of the 4 of Rafaela, Duran, O'Neill and Abreu. They lost Story but signed Romy Gonzalez, they have Grissom (recovering) with Valdez and Hamilton behind. The only real hole was at 1B (since Dalbec was never a good bet) and then Casas goes down so they had to scramble Just how does anyone think they can have some more starting caliber guys waiting in the wings? The fact is they have had amazingly bad injury luck across key positions and are still able to tread water. On a personal note, I had to work late yesterday so I have tickets for tonight's game and of course missed a great Sox win with exciting offense and defense from my former binky and now favorite Sox, C-Dan. I expect to be a jinx tonight and by so stating hoping for a reverse J.

There really should be a rule for guys who have TJ or just season ending long term surgery rehab type injuries so that teams don't need to carry those type of guys on the 40 the whole offseason. Maybe not unlimited number but I don't know maybe 2 reserve type slots where they don't count against the 40 in the offseason.

A man can dream. They also have Martin's 8.75, O'Neill's 5.85 and Turner's 4.15. Theoretically they should be in a position to spend some money but after last year's FA I'm not holding my breath, although so far in 2024 they look shrewd enough not having spent big bucks yet. They'll also have a better idea on Mayer/Anthony/Teel trio though which perhaps could have been what they're waiting for to spend money. It sure makes it a lot easier spending market rate money on big FAs when you have a stud or two or hopefully three playing for peanuts in their pre-arb years.

Not to be insensitive or anything (Obv bummed and wishing GW the best, physically and mentally)...
BUT -- this is why "extending" Houck or Crawford is riskier than it sounds and will likely only happen in the form of club option years rather than outright guaranteed years.
Good value on an arm can turn to an overpay in the blink of an eye. Limit exposure where possible.

Should of traded Kenley this offseason even if we paid the entire deal to get a decent return and made Whit the closer. I feel horrible for him and I'm praying we see him before 2026.

For the most part I’m seeing the big picture. The injuries are crazy. I try to catch myself to be more patient. It’s too bad one or two of these kids were not ready now because it would be such a shot in the arm for the ball club. There a lot to like here . Much better than last year.

FWIW, the study that showed that relief pitchers get injured at a higher rate than starters showed that all to be related to shoulder injuries - there was no correlation between role and elbow injuries. Very hard to put this on the fact that Whitlock was working as a starter.
Honestly, the dude just doesn't stay healthy. Needs to be baked in with expectations with him at this point.

FYI, Fulmer is on a minor league deal. In theory he'd be available in Rule 5 if not added, so you're right if that's what you mean, but he wouldn't need to be exposed to waivers to get him off of the 40-man because he's not on it.

Yes, the first part. Were the financials ever released? Assuming there's no setbacks reported in his rehab I can see a team selecting him on what's probably not a costly deal that can be offered back.

Too bad about Whitlock, for his sake I hope he just needs the brace procedure. With Whitlock down the rest of the season do they need to go get someone? I'm not sold on Criswell being the solution for the next 4+ months and the options in Wooster haven't been great to date either. I don't want to sell the farm, but if they could find some league average innings in a deal that headlined some combination of Yorke/Meidroth/Paulino I think that would be a good move. If they need Depth, Zack Grienke is a free agent and (as far as I am aware) hasn’t file the retirement papers yet… just saying.
