Grissom down 0-2 then working a walk is a good sign.

It is unfortunate we can't disguise Duran and have him hit for others in the lineup.

O'Neil lost at the plate right now. 6 or 7 straight K's?

Tyler O’Neill in May: “70 AB - 2 HR - 5 RBI - 34 K .157/.253/.314/.567. Striking out 48.6% of his AB’s” - BostonSports Info
Let’s say for the sake of argument this isn’t a concussion thing - what is off here? His mechanics? Trying too hard to hit bombs and a bad approach? Wonder where this ranks for worst months of his career

When Bryan Mata’s rehab is up, I think he gets Zack Kelly’s spot, not Anderson’s. We don’t yet have any evidence that Mata can chew up low lev innings at the MLB level. Anderson just gave us our best chance to take the next two games. If Mata comes in to this game to throw 70 pitches, he might have done this, or he might have walked a few and gotten six outs.
Edit: oops nevermind, Mata is just never going to be healthy ever

Silver lining: Anderson saved the bully, not turning one loss into two. Get 'em tomorrow.

Sox have had the exact same 26-man roster for 13 straight days.
When was the last time that happened?

He's a career 30+% Strikeout rate type hitter who was K'ing at a 24.4% clip in April.

TO was never going to hit .300 with 40 plus HRs, but .250 with 30 HRs is a reasonable expectation. He'll blow hot and cold and barring injury will probably wind up around .250 with 30 HRs, giving them RH power they need, although of course he's a prime trade candidate if the Sox arent squarely in the playoff mix.

Duran is on a 5.7 WAR/600 PA pace. Hamilton is on a 2.4 WAR/600 PA pace. Rafaela is on a -2 WAR/600 PA pace.
They don't actually have to play all three of these guys every day, and I wonder if there's a point where Rafaela starts getting some more days off against righties.

This is true and I wouldn’t mind it but currently you’d also prefer to be able to give Grissom, Refsnyder, Cooper and maybe even O’Neill days off against righties. I’m hoping they start playing Romy more often but he gets most righty games off right now too.

The main value he provides is stellar CF defense that is a) mostly theoretical so far, and b) something that Duran also provides. So it's really hard for him to actually provide value to the team, at least until he figures out his swing and plate approach.
I don't mind giving him this whole season to try to figure it out. But it doesn't seem like playing him every day is actually helping with that.

He's on +9 runs/150 games pace in CF by Statcast for his major league career.

stellar CF defense that is a) mostly theoretical so far
He's on +9 runs/150 games pace in CF by Statcast for his major league career. I was referring to this season and his +1 OAA and 0 DRS, and drawing on my memory of his mistake-prone tendencies. And even +9 would arguably put him just outside the top tier of defensive CFers (e.g., in 2023 seven guys had +10 or better). Happy to grant that he probably will be a great centerfielder, though, which is why I did mention the stellar defense in the first place.
Anyways, I don't mean to be quibbly. The main point is that, to the extent he can provide value with CF defense and speed, Duran can do that as well while also being able to hit the ball. So functionally his contribution to the team is to push Duran to LF where they can get a defensive upgrade on O'Neill or Refsnyder, which is a benefit that is more than cancelled out by the floppiness of his bat. In fact he'd have to hit quite a lot better for that not to be the case.
In short, he'd probably have to be about a league average hitter to actually help the team, given his redundancy with Duran. And he's pretty far from that now.
