They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

My eldest's baseball team is called the Rays and we live in Milwaukee (he's actually on a field trip at American Family Field right now), so he hasn't known who to root for all week. His solution has been to cheer for the winner, so all good so far.

Duran LF, Abreu RF, Wong C, Devers 3B, O’Neill DH, Smith 1B, Grissom 2B, Hamilton SS, Rafaela CF
I kinda like O’Neill at DH if Hamilton can continue playing solidly enough to handle short some of the time, with Rob, Romy, and Cooper as options off the bench for OF, INF and 1B as needed.

Cooper last started May 19 and so today he’d be halfway through an IL stint had they placed him there then. He did pinch hit once in the middle but is clearly not fully healthy. It’s frustrating because I guess if it’s day to day you ride it out but at this point feels like they may have been better off putting him on the IL. Just hate watching Smith.

I keep thinking Refsnyder should be getting more of those DH at-bats until O'Neill shakes out of his funk. Really hard to believe that noggin-bump isn't still impacting him somewhat.

Not saying I love the guy either, but Smith has been serviceable lately, and he's had the knack for some timely hits which this team needs.

Sean McAdam was quoting an anonymous “longtime executive” when Garrett Cooper was picked up, who said: “Well-intended player, but overprotects himself physically, with a low threshold for pain. Mentally wears down if playing often...” That felt very very gossipy initially… but the continued absences is weird and does make you wonder www.masslive.com/redsox/2024/04/executive-offers-scouting-report-on-newest-member-of-red-sox.html

I also wonder about O'Neill. But Cora seems pretty determined to minimize Ref's ABs against righties (notwithstanding his successful start against Pepiot on Wednesday).
In other news, the Sox are now 8th in MLB in OPS, and have three players among the top 25 qualified, followed by Duran at 38. Wong would be there, too, but he's just shy of qualifying. Of course, there's a pretty big chasm between those five and the rest of the roster. (Though admittedly, McGuire's been decent and Hamilton has been in a roll lately.) It's a good reminder that offense is down across the league.

Looking at the new (and old) hitting metrics ... mostly dominate by the usual folks. Devers is 1st or 2nd in 5 of the 6 categories, the exception being bat speed.
Two very interesting exceptions ...
Who is second in EV, first in adjusted EV (no clue as to what the adjustment is), 3rd in bat speed, and 1st in hard-hit percentage?
Why, Romy Gonzalez, of course. Too bad they can't find a place to play him.
Who is 5th in adjusted EV, 3rd in distance, 5th in in hard-hit %, and 6th in Barrel %?
Enmanual Valdez. The catch? He's also got the highest launch angle. If he can bring that down, he's a hitter.

Not saying I love the guy either, but Smith has been serviceable lately, and he's had the knack for some timely hits which this team needs. I'd say 'serviceable' is generous. The most favorable cherry-picked run of games you can get for him is since 5/14, during which he has a .623 OPS and a 77 wRC+.

Apple TV ruining another friday evening... Signed up for the free 7 days to watch tonight's game & might stick around a bit longer to watch Severance. Episode 1 was intriguing.

It’s not just that Smith has been bad this year, but he hasn’t even been a league average hitter since 2020 and he is a horrendous base runner
