Park, dedicated fan base, major market. It doesn’t seem crazy to me. Love the love for Mookie. How many votes did Verdugo get? All those things are true about the Cubs too, and to varying extents the Giants, Phillies, Yankees and some of those teams are much better than the Red Sox currently. It seems like I just underestimated how much baseball players love Fenway though.

You look at the Phillies' stats and they have a number of really good players, but on top of that it's just one guy after another overperforming. Including the really good players, who are playing like great players. (And then Nick Castellanos.)

I still can't understand what led to Smith getting the lion's share of the playing time when Cooper has been a better hitter, defender and baserunner in recent history and is a more natural fit for the roster as a righty when Casas returns. I think that the inconsistent playing time only hurt his performance here. That said, Smith has clearly been better while on the Red Sox and the projections are about equal for both so I get it. Would have been nice if it was the other way around though.

Not sure he was the better defender in recent history, Smith has turned himself into a good glove that one inning notwithstanding But agreed-Cooper clearly was the better roster fit but he just hasn’t justified keeping a job over Smith. Smith has clearly been better like you say

Would have been nice if it was the other way around though. I think it had something to do with personality fit tbh. There were rumblings that he would JD Drew it and bag out on playing if he didn't feel 100% and for a guy on the margins that is a pretty weird place to put yourself if you want to stay on a roster. Plus Smith has looked more solid defensively at 1B at least in my eyes, Cooper had a few stinkers in his short time manning the position. Either way, it's not a big loss at any rate. Hope Yoshida comes back and can provide a little more stability at least offensively.

Regarding the defense question - OAA really likes Cooper +9 in 1350 innings at 1B since 2021 compared to Smith's +2 in 1750 innings. It's possible that Smith is better as a target or with scoops though, still seems we don't have a great way of measuring that, and it's not like Smith is a poor defender there either as pointed out.

The Smith over Cooper choice surprised me more so because Casas is a LHB so Smith seemed DFA bound once he is back. Maybe they both were. Cooper did look bad though and the Cubs ditched him for nothing too. Life goes on.

I'm pretty surprised they gave Yoshida only 2 games to rehab. I'd be surprised if any hitter can have their timing back that quickly after that much time off and I'd rather he be able to hit the ground running rather than do what Grissom did for a couple weeks.

By all accounts, Smith has been great with the young players, has worked hard to ingratiate himself, added leadership/a strong veteran presence and has even had some timely hits.
By all accounts, Cooper has not.
This team has players being held together with Duct Tape and silly puddy. In fact I've heard that the real reason Pablo Reyes isn't on the team anymore is that his head fell off when diving for a grounder earlier in the season... And Pablo wanted to keep playing!
Where as Cooper missed 10 days with a grade two hang nail.
Here's some highlights from the beginning of this season.

I don’t really mind the argument against selling during this summer, that we’re only X games out of the last wild card spot. This may be true, but it sure feels like this club should be four or five games out of a playoff spot already: not terrible, respectable enough, but firmly behind the top tier teams in the league. Since they aren’t already four or five games out, I don’t think either side of the argument for what to do is objectively wrong. We’re going to see a sub .500 playoff team before long. They've managed to stay .500 without at least their 2nd best hitter and some might say their best hitter in Casas and without one of their best 5 or 6 hitters in yoshida. Both might be back sooner than later. The pitching has been good. The reason for optimism is there. Even when Casas gets back, and that's a big if, we've seen what guys look like after missing significant time. At this point you can't rely on Casas for anything this season. It also seems like some of the pitching magic has worn off a bit. And of course, you can't rule out the possibility of more injuries.

I think Dom Smith made a lot more friends than Cooper over the last few weeks is what it came down to

Glad to see Yoshida back. The Cooper DFA is a good move. Dalbec and Westbrook provide better position coverage from the bench and Smith has been better.

If Smith is DFAd when Casas returns, it will be a real injustice.
In any event, I’m not convinced Casas will return on July 1, as he seems to believe.

I like the move. Remember Yoshida deeply admires Bryce Harper. Hopefully, sharing the field with him with begin to wake up vintage Yoshida again, the genius hitter. When he is on, this offense is difference. And when the alternative is what we have been seeing with Garrett Cooper at DH, now seems like the right time to bring back Yoshida.

The Dommer v. D.B. Cooper ? Not much of a choice as far as who has been better.
Roster fit seems low on the totem pole for a team trying desperately to win games.
