7/5-7/7 Red Sox @ Yankees Series Thread

Also worth mentioning that Crawford already has over 100 innings pitched. With 73 games left he will easily surpass his previous high of 129 innings. If they do get to the playoffs, it would be good to have him around, so keeping him from being overused is likely a priority.

Did anyone note this?
The Sox won 3 to 0 while facing just three pitchers, each of whom gave up a solo homer, and they did so in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings.
How rare is that? In the last 7 years (counting 2020 and 2024 as halves), the Sox have only had three other 3-0 road wins, period. There were only two homers (Hanley R. in 2017, Story last year) involved in the other 9 runs.
If this has ever happened with anyone else, there has to be just a handful of instances.
I think we can safely say that it has never happened when all the homers were hit by someone with a name of "Rafael" or longer.
----------
Sox are now 16-6 while the MFY's are 5-15. And they are the road against the Rays and O's while we are home vs. A's and Royals.
Royals have 2 games in StL. before the 3 with us; they were 16-17 on the road before going 2-8 most recently, losing series to the Dodgers, A's and Rockies and being swept by the Rangers.

Only 35 pitchers have thrown over 100 innings in MLB as we approach the All-Star Break. Of those:
Tanner Houck (111 innings) is 5th in ERA (2.68) and 3rd in fWAR (3.2).
Kutter Crawford (107 innings) is 15th in ERA (3.20) and 19th in fWAR (2.0).

Only HR more off the plate than Devers last night, nothing like Devers’ contact!

www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/40514382/mlb-trade-deadline-2024-passan-gms-execs-most-stake-brian-cashman-dave-dombrowski per Jeff Passan - "Brian Cashman, general manager, New York Yankees Three weeks ago, the Yankees were a juggernaut, and it looked like Cashman had done one of the best roster construction jobs in his 27 seasons running baseball operations for New York. Now the Yankees are desperate for upgrades -- in the infield and bullpen particularly, though it's impossible to discount their rotation cratering, too. In 2022, New York started 52-20 and added significantly -- if ineffectively -- at the deadline. The Yankees were 50-22 in 2018 and got a pair of starting pitchers and a late-inning reliever. Their 50-22 start this season has been dented by a 5-15 stretch since. At the very least, the Yankees should get a bat-first infielder -- the Los Angeles Angels' Luis Rengifo fits, though the hand injury that sent him to the injured list is alarming and untimely -- and a late-inning reliever, a la Miami's Tanner Scott or Angels closer Carlos Estevez, who has issued one unintentional walk in 27 innings this season. Cashman also, at the very least, ought to monitor the starting pitching market. Over the past month, Yankees starters have the worst ERA of any staff in baseball. Before he kept Boston at bay Sunday night, Luis Gil had been a mess since his brilliant first two months. Marcus Stroman's annual midseason swoon is happening. Carlos Rodon has allowed seven home runs in his past 26 innings. Gerrit Cole's stuff is down a tick (though his increased cutter usage has paid dividends and is worth watching). Clarke Schmidt still hasn't thrown off the mound since being shut down with a strained lat. The Yankees haven't won a World Series since 2009. They only have Juan Soto guaranteed in pinstripes for another three months. They can't expect Aaron Judge to carry them. Anthony Volpe is a very good player, and Ben Rice looks real, and maybe Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo and Scott Effross and Nick Burdi return from the injured list and suddenly the juggernaut reforms. But the Yankees -- and Cashman by extension -- cannot rely on hope. This team needs more. And the exigency can't be overstated"

Didn't watch any games this series, but based on this HR, sounds like BoSox fans are making themselves known in Yankee Stadium. Crowd noise wasn't much different from a home game. I know there's been lots of talk about the Sox ceding the Fenway crowd, but is this happening everywhere now? I'm mostly glad we're moving beyond the bad old days of literally NOT being safe in an opponent stadium, at least among sox/yanks.

Great, but, is the other shoe yet to drop = how to manage what is tracking as career highs in innings pitched, towards having them available and effective, for September & beyond?

The best thing about that Devers homer is that the pitcher perfectly the spot his catcher set up at - a good 8 inches off the plate. It might not be physically possible to pitch around Devers.

Devers is now tied for 13th in fWAR. He’s putting up his best offensive season ever, but he’s also playing better defense than last year and running the bases as well as he has since 2021.
I’m hoping this year he can establish himself as a top 10-15 guy and maintain that level through his prime.

I was at the game, there was definitely a solid Red Sox contingent in the crowd. I usually make it to a few Sox games at Yankee Stadium a year and other than in the bleachers the Red Sox fans definitely come out. Honestly other than when I sit in the bleachers its pretty lowkey, having said that the bleachers there still has some ridiculous fans who will not hesitate to try to start a fight. I kind of appreciate it, reminds me of early/mid 2000s when there was some real heat in the rivalry.

Kutter Crawford (107 innings) is 15th in ERA (3.20) and 19th in fWAR (2.0). fWAR for pitchers uses FIP, and thanks to Statcast, we now know that there are huge differences in quality of contact allowed, with ---OMG! of all the wacky things! ---the good pitchers giving up weaker contact than the bad ones! Who would have thought that?
It's a pretty much useless.
Among the 150 SP with the most PA, Houck is 4th in wOBA (expected ERA), after Sale, Skubal, and Glasnow. Crawford is 38th. The team is in a 3-way tie for 3rd, behind Sea and Phi and alongside ChC and Bal.
