Great win. Abused a very good starter in Lugo, and Crawford has turned into a damn good pitcher.

When was the last time we were 4.5 games out of 1st? The first week of the season….oh, you meant at the all-star break…. In 2021 the Red Sox and MFY were both 8 behind the Rays. In 2022 16.5 behind. In 2019 9.0 games behind. In 2023 also 9.0 behind. In 2018 the Red Sox were 4.5 AHEAD in the AL at 68-30 on their way to 108-54…..The greatest ever Red Sox team!

I remember the Impossible Dream album about the 1967 Sox and the only line I can recall is, "At All Star for goodness sake, just eight games from the lead."

Nothing makes the experience of watching a ballgame more pleasant than first pitch strikes.

Can’t stress enough how important it is to win tomorrow. Gotta end the 1st half on a high note. Also just looked it up and the Sox have the hardest remaining schedule in the AL after tomorrow w/ a .515 winning percentage of their opponents. Gonna be a huge grind this summer.

The Royals traded their #2 prospect and the #39 overall pick in this year's draft for Hunter Harvey, a mediocre reliever from the Nats, and DFA'd Anderson (the guy who pitched the 8th for them this afternoon) to make room.
Harvey has a 4.17 xERA this year courtesy of a 4th percentile hard hit rate. Anderson's been even worse by xERA (5.04), but I just don't understand this move at all for KC. I think they've been playing over their heads thus far this year and I expect them to miss the playoffs.
I doubt he'll be with the team in time for tomorrow's game, but still... Someone make it make sense.
"He throws 98... I can fix him 👉👈" - KC's GM, probably. Or could it be that their farm is so barren they have to push chips in for the world's worst boom before they bust?
Edit: Side note, I didn't realize you could trade draft picks. Maybe it's kosher because it's a competitive balance pick?

I think it says more about the quality of the draft and the state of the Royals farm system. They don't have anything to trade and so they 'overpaid' for something they wanted. The top trade choices are going to be very expensive, but there's more available than people suspect (at least potentially) so I believe there will be some reasonable costs. Again not for the top choices though.

Pondering where we started, coming out of spring training with a middling roster, to where we are now about to enter the AS break, I'm delighted. Excited. And hopeful. The Celtics run provided good vibes and the Red Sox are continuing those vibes.
Let's win today and grab a well deserved break

Kutter Crawford now ranks among qualified starters:
23rd in fWAR / 21st in RA9 WAR 18th in Stuff+ / 8th in Pitching+ 33rd in xERA
Man has developed into a legit #2 starter

Serious question:
How would Kyle Teel compare to Reese McGuire as of today? Is his timeline realistically setting him up to contribute by end of season and a potential postseason? Or is Reese our guy for 2024?
If you swap Dom/Reese with Casas/Teel in today’s lineup, it’s pretty scary from top to bottom.

I think jumping Teel up two levels and sitting him would be a disservice to his career path. He seemingly has defensive issues that need smoothing out. While Tek would be a big aid, trying to do that on the fly in the heat of a pennant race instead of spring training doesnt really help him. The pitching staff is used to working with Wong and McGuire and it's going well. I dont see the big upgrade at this point over McGuire in a limited role that makes it worth cutting into his development time. His time will come in the not so distant future. I just don't see the need to force it now.

Another not talked about thing is - this Red Sox team genuinely, I think, likes one another - they are a tight knit group. There's no reason to mess with that for at best a marginal upgrade through the end of the year. I wouldn't touch the catching position until the offseason or next year.

As a life long One Piece fan myself who has been watching since childhood, the fact that Bello is wearing custom shoes today of the anime makes me love him even more than I already did.
Hopefully today is the day that he puts it together and gets back on track.
