Interesting idea to get Skubal
|
Post by brendan98 on Jul 25, 2024 14:08:32 GMT -5
I was just listening to MLB channel on Sirius XM, one of the hosts basically said that it has been reported that the only team who could get Skubal was the Orioles, but than said he thought that the Dodgers could actually trade for Skubal by taking on Javy Baez' contract in the deal. His opinion was that they were the only ones who would touch that contract, and that Baez might actually help them at SS or 3B.
After that sunk in, I looked up Baez' deal and wonder if the Sox could do something creative to get Skubal without giving up 2 or all 3 of the Big 3. Baez has the following left on his deal - 2024:$25M, 2025:$25M, 2026:$24M, 2027:$24M. If the Sox take on all of that deal, would one of the big 3 and maybe Valdez get them Skubal and Baez? Another idea would be to swap Trevor Story for Baez in the deal, Story has basically the same money due over the same number of years, and I think Detroit would view him as an upgrade. In that scenario the Sox would need to give up more compensation but might still only have to deal one of the big 3, maybe adding in (Campbell or Bleis) and (Zanatello or Yorke).
This is just off the top of my head, while definitely unrealistic, I think the Sox could absorb Baez' brutal contract (if ownership would sign off) in a creative opportunity to get a rare pitcher.

Frankly I don't care how good Skubal is, I don't think I'd take Skubal and Baez/his contract for a bag of baseballs. No chance I'm giving up any of the big 3 in any deal that involves Baez crappy contract.

Lets say: Skubal and Baez for Campbell, Yorke, Fitts The money complicates the compensation for sure, but we all complain that the Sox have not acted like a big market team, this would absolutely be a big market move, the Sox would be using their financial flexibility to acquire possibly the best young pitcher in baseball outside of Skenes.

I want nothing to do with Baez contract so personally I'd just be out on any deal that involves taking him back. To be honest if I'm the Tigers I wouldn't try and attach Baez contract to a Skubal deal, it's not like they're really paying anyone else much at all so I would assume they would just try and get the absolute best package back.

I think that they would love to get the O's to give up multiple of their top 5 prospects, but the O's have been so stingy with those guys (for good reason), that I wonder if they would pivot to a really good deal that also gets Baez out of Detroit. No way to know what Tigers management and ownership is thinking.

Thinking about it further... the Sox have wasted $62.5M on Trevor Story the last 3 years and it is hard to see how he and the remaining $77.5M over the next 3 years fits on this team, and also pretty much wasted $37M on Giolito (hopefully I'm wrong and his 2025 season isn't a waste but I'm not counting on it). So if I'm Breslow, I jump at the chance to "waste" $83M on Baez if it lands me probably one of the top 5 pitchers in the game at the age of 27.

Story has a chance to provide value is the big difference between comparing him and Baez. Also let's say you're correct and Story continues to be a waste and Giolito is a waste next year. Is it a good idea to add another waste of money in Baez? In this hypothetical they're now wasting 70M+ on three players next year and about $45-50M on Story and Baez for the next two seasons after next.

Or for the next 7-10 years if you can extend him? No doubt about it Baez' deal is awful, and the Sox would likely end up having to eat it at some point and cut him, but the value of a young ace in the game today is absurd and that should be factored in, I assume you would definitely take on Baez' contract to acquire Skenes, Skubal is older and probably not as good, but he is an ace with 2 more years of control and that is extremely rare and valuable.

Give me Burnes/Fried for $30M a year while keeping all three of Mayer/Anthony/Teel vs taking Skubal and Baez and having to trade one of them in the deal. Skenes and Skubal are not comparable, one has 2 years left the other has 5 years. But anyway not going to keep going back and forth on this, I can understand the thought process and why it has it's appeal I just wouldn't do it while you would. To each their own.

Are there money issues in Detroit? Baez and Maeda are the only bad contracts. Tanking the value of 2.5 years of Skubal would be terrible.

Fried will probably get between 30 and 35 million/year.

At least not if this quote from this MLBTR story from earlier this year is correct. www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/05/report-mlb-teams-planning-for-roki-sasaki-posting-this-offseason.html

I understand not wanting to take on Baez' contract, but I wonder why you'd say this? I mean if Detroit paid the whole contract, the Sox could simply cut Baez, so why would it be an issue?

I know this is all a theoretical but if the Tigers paid all of Baez contract then there would be no reason to even bother including him in the deal as it wouldn't make the prospect cost any lesser.

This whole idea is just not realistic. Red Sox aren't going to eat Baez's contract, and if Detroit eats Baez's contract there's no change of the enormous prospect cost it would take.
And the Tigers would be stupid to tank his value with a bad contract, we should know, we've made that mistake.
