But his bb/k is consistently great. 19/9 (April) 14/7 (May) That's crazy good, but paradoxically it kind of makes me question his projection, in the sense that he's clearly exploiting low-A pitchers who can't find the strike zone with a GPS and a sherpa. Is he still going to be able to hit the ball at the higher levels where he won't always be ahead in the count? Or is this the Che-Hsuan Lin experience all over again? Lin always has contact issues. He doesn't hit the balls with authority very often. Kind of slap hitter. Meanwhile Mookie is hitting the balls hard with compact and quick strokes.

Much like with Coyle (though for different reasons) I don't buy Betts' power at the MLB level, but it's a good sign for his ability to make hard contact.
If he keeps making good contact and jumps onto the radar, maybe I'll see about hitting up their coach for an interview, if the SP guys here have any interest in it. I do some speed workouts at their (Overton, his high school) track every once in a while.

Single-A second baseman Mookie Betts is showing some five-tool potential. He has 7 homers, 10 steals, and .264/ .418/ .496 batting line. With his high OBP, it seems he has an advanced approach. His speed is definitely there, but are his his seven home runs to date legitimate? What does he project to do at the major league level? I don't know much about him.

I moved your post, lifer, so that you can share in the buzz building around Betts. For anyone who believes that BA is not all that relevant, Betts appears to be a new poster-child. The "secondary" skills are starting to shine on through.

I'm starting to think Mookie is the more likely heir apparent to Pedey than Coyle.

Look at his splits: Vs LHP: .205/.311/.333 Vs RHP: .306/.453/.583 Considering that there's no such a thing called reverse platoon for hitters, those numbers could go up!

Does anyone know if Mookie's HR/FB ratio is sustainable? can't seem to find it anywhere

Mookie in April: 9 Ks in 21 games In the last 4 games: 8 Ks and 15 for the month of May Change of approach?

I don't think so, all 4 games were against the Riverdogs (NYY), in the first 2 he went 5-9 with a homer, a walk, and 3 ks, in the final two he struck out 5 times (with 2 bbs and a single) but Greenville as a team struck out 28 times in those two games (also faced Rafael De Paula in game two, he is MILB leader in Ks).

Eh, just a bad series. Could just be that they had pitchers that could throw him strikes. It's not like he went in four days ago and said "I think I'm gonna start hacking." Charleston pitchers have the league lead in strikeouts by a healthy margin. 10.2 K/9 when the next-highest is 9.1.

April fifth through 23rd, Mookie had a .496 ops, 9 walks, six strikeouts. Since then it's 1.111 with 32 walks/19k's. His BABIP is ~.360 in that time but with a .290iso that doesn't seem out of place. He seems ready to move, doesn't look like Coyle is though.
He is raw as a fielder apparently, but moving up a level wouldn't change much.

Some fun with stats:
April 5 to April 23: .151/.270/.226 April 24 to June 5: .341/.475/.636
April 5 to May 2: .145/.340/.263 May 3 to June 5: .387/.480/.698
April 23 to May 2: .130/.459/.348
It's funny, 4/24 is when he started getting on base, 5/3 is when he started hitting (slugging is high for that interim period because of his 3 hits, one was a HR and one was a 3B).
That said, he's had about 164 at bats during his "good" period. Let's pump the brakes on the promotion train. I'd like to see him get to 300-350, minimum, before the promotion, and that's most likely what'll happen.

Promote him when they decide Coyle's ready for AA, which shouldn't be too long as he's repeating the level. I don't see any reason to press the matter before that time, or a reason to hold off after that time.

I don't see any reason to press the matter before that time, or a reason to hold off after that time. Coyle is presently on the DL and has hit .185/.267/.262 with 25 strikeouts and 7 walks in 75 plate appearances since May 9. He's not getting promoted anytime soon. There was one six-game stretch in there, from 5/16-24, when he went 10 for 23 with 2 2b and a HR and a 4/8 BB/K ratio, but I'm guessing that he then injured the knee that has him on the DL right now, and after a 2-for-16 in his next four games with zero power and 6 K's, they sat him and eventually DL'ed him.

Quick update on Mookie: .287/.420/.510, 46/27 BB/K, .298 BABIP in 253 plate appearances. The only thing that seems unsustainable is his 17% HR/FB ratio. He also has 13 SB and only 1 CS.

Coyle is presently on the DL ... He's not getting promoted anytime soon. I see no problem with Betts spending most of the year at Greenville if necessary.

Another one past time for a callup. Understand that oft injured this year Coyle is at Salem, but Coyle hasn't played a game in weeks and Betts is better than the competition at Greenville. It's high time.
