CAN'T and SHOULDN'T are two VERY different things. I would think that many of the people who say the Patriots shouldn't be starting Maye would also say those teams shouldn't be starting their rookie QBs.
I'd also point out that the best teachers, managers, leaders, etc know that it's not about applying the same rules to everybody and "see who wins". It's about how to maximize the performance of the INDIVIDUAL you are working with. That doesn't look the same for everyone. NONE of us should be saying what they should or should not be doing because none of us have spent 1 second with Drake Maye to try and understand what's best for HIS development.

If 50% of your throws are under pressure, you're not learning very much. Until they get the OL straightened out, Maye should just be on the sideline watching. No sense getting him killed. Get the OL fixed, then put him in.

Would also argue that IF footwork was the issue that many believed needed the most work, I can't imagine that'll get improved if you're spending most of your time running for your life. But again, that's a generalized theory. Only people who have spent time with Drake truly have a chance of knowing what's best for his development.

www.pff.com/news/nfl-offensive-line-rankings-week-4-2024Ranked #32 again "The New England offensive line allowed six sacks in a loss to the Jets, which is the most by any offensive line in a game this season. The unit ranks last in PFF pass-blocking efficiency and has surrendered 41 pressures on 96 dropbacks." I get annoyed with the narrative that the Patriots can start Maye because the Commanders and Bears also have bad offensive lines. The Patriots literally have the worst OL unit. It's kind of amazing how bad of a job Wolf did (albeit Bill didn't give him much to start with) I agree that Caleb can't fully be blamed for his poor performance because the Bears OL hasn't given him time to work. Patriots need to draft a LT, RT and a developmental center in this next draft. Unless they really believe in Caedan Wallace at RT. If money or draft capital is an issue I'd deconstruct the defense (trading Judon for a 3rd was a great move) and pour all my resources into upgrading the OL and getting Maye a couple of offensive weapons. There's nothing more important than getting this right with Maye. sports.yahoo.com/patriots-pff-grades-best-worst-170421979.html

We've yet to see Sow play and reports from camp were he's playing better than last year. Cole Strange at worst comes back next year and he was playing very well before his injury.
Onwenu actually played well versus Jets if you believe PFF and frankly given Gonzalez I do wonder if we should even be using PFF anymore.
Everyone had Wallace as a RT coming out, if he can become even a decent swing OT that goes a long way for the future.
My point being when healthy, looking at next year. Our OL might not be the huge need it seems. It might be more of we badly need a good LT.
Let's see what Sow does when healthy, see if Robinson can improve pass protection to go with his very good run blocking and what Wallace can do with more time at LT. Basically most rookie OL players haven't been very good their first few games. Even Joe Alt, good in pass blocking, bad at run blocking. Alt was the elite of the elite prospect wise. This new crazy movement system for both run and pass blocking likely isn't making things easier on them. Nevermind the lack of deep throws.
Will be interesting what happens with Bears OL sack numbers after Caleb Williams puts up huge passing numbers. Now giving defensive Coordinators something to worry about, instead of just putting everyone in the box.
A Jets team that hardly blitz's went crazy against us with 7/8 guys in the box on most plays. Why? Absolutely no fear of getting burned deep.

Side note - the PFF Grades on coverage make more sense if you include the significant caveat that it's the grade WHEN THEY ARE TARGETED. Of course, a significant portion of a CBs job is to try and prevent the receiver from even being targeted. So while the number, within that context, makes sense it's probably not the best way to evaluate a CB.
Some comments on the OL (present and future)
- If Wallace can even become a solid (not even very good) LT that solves a lot of problems both this year and next - Based on participation, there is a chance NE will have their 4th starting LT so far ('Trey Jacobs). Woof - I know all the arguments for keeping Onwenu at RT but, if Wallace doesn't pan out at LT, I'd be stunned if they don't give him a shot at RT before "relegating" him to Swing T. - Assuming they can end up with 2 starting Gs out of Sow, Robinson and Onwenu - I'd LOVE to see if Strange can be a C (something UMASS has brought up). Andrews isn't going to be here forever.

I’m pretty confident that the following players are at least solid starting caliber players:
Onwenu Andrews Sow Strange
If the line is healthy next year they really only need a good left tackle.
Hopefully, Wallace and Robinson prove to be solid backups if not starting caliber. If that’s the case, you really don’t need a lot.
Things are currently just shallow, in chaos and they left a gaping hole at the most important spot. It’s the odd spot of it definitely being a train wreck but one that can possibly be quickly fixed.

I'd rather see him back at guard though where I think his true talent shines. Jordan grades at about average for the game. These were the team offensive leaders in PFF so I'm really curious how the rest of the line graded out. Edit: Never mind, just had to scroll down. Not good for the rest of he line.

I do have to laugh at those LG ranking because the Patriots benched him and played Ted Karras over him because he was that bad. Unless you get a high level RT, he should be the RT.

He still needs to be better based on what he's being paid, but being above average is fine for now, but the position is set.

I take those LG rankings as meaningless, he literally got pulled and benched playing LG for a decent player. If that was true, he doesn't get benched, he plays LG, we keep Mason and never draft Cole Strange.

Which team has a quality OT to trade? This is the issue, so yes it would make sense to but you’re not going to be able to do that.

Wallace has to be good to go considering Jordan is out and Zach Thomas a OT/OG filled in for him last week. Still not a good feeling knowing there's a good chance Wallace and/or Sow might not play the whole game.
One thing is certain the Patriots front office really sucked at signing veteran OL guys this year! One walks away from team and the other has been passed on depth chart by rookies, journey man players and players claimed off waivers.
That's not a good look for a team that had tons of cap space and biggest need was OL!

Jalen Hurts BALLING right now with a perfect 1/6 passing for 7 yards, leading his team to a small deficit of 21-0. I actually like Jalen’s overall calm demeanor, but I’m ready to sound off the fraud alert.
On the other hand, I really like Jordan Love. He shouldn’t be playing, he’s moving kind of stiff. His arm is fantastic, sweet touch and makes sound decisions. He and Stroud give me hope for young passers.

The Vikings can franchise tag him, right? Good thing he figured it out after he left the Jets. They can, but remember they have JJ McCarthy they drafted in the first round. Wouldn’t be a bad thing to ease him back in slowly next year so having Darnold another year makes some sense. Or franchise him and trade him.
