Would you care to present your argument on why then?

Some of you guys are acting like Smoak is a huge commitment for whatever team he plays for. We'd get him cheap, so the worst case scenario is we give up a low level spec or two for a guy who doesn't end up being a good 1B option. Big upside is still there. He'll be an .800 OPS guy at least in his prime IMO. Only 25 years old now.

Sands is now gone apparently and the assumption that Napoli's contract gonna sort itself out is becoming unlikelier by the second. As of this moment, the starting first-baseman for the Boston Red Sox, is Mauro Gomez. Like ctscott I don't know the roster situation with the M's but we if we can do a 2-for-1 deal with some of our guys on the 25-man bubble, I wouldn't think twice. I disagree.

There is absolutely no question in my mind that the Napoli deal gets done. Especially as more and more 1B options come off the market without them being involved, I have no doubt that they believe the deal will get done.

Napoli, Mauro, and, as needed, Nava, does it for me. No need for Smoke.

a) Agree with honkbal and mainesox that the premise that Napoli's contract is in danger of not getting done because of how long it's taking isn't really true.
b) I don't get the fascination with Smoak. Sure, he was much better away from Safeco last year, but the year before his split went the opposite direction. I'd honestly rather go with Mauro Gomez at first base than give up anything to get Smoak, unless it was something like a couple of org guys. Not that I'm advocating going with Gomez at first base.

I still think the Napoli deal eventually gets done, what I said is that it is getting unlikelier as the time goes down, hard to argue against that. It may be semantics but I don't want to see my point being misinterpreted.
On the second point I guess we'll agree to disagree. His 2011 numbers are the outlier among the general data points regarding hitters playing at Safeco Field. I'm not arguing to pay through the nose to acquire him, but deals of the sort that were proposed on the first page are within what I think bring surplus value back. Of course it goes down the toilet when/if Napoli is signed.

The longer they spend trying to get the Napoli deal done, and the more backup options that end up signing elsewhere, I think the more likely the Napoli deal is to get done; they don't spend all this time trying to work something out if they aren't intent on getting something done. I also think the Napoli deal appears more likely with Morales being traded, and Swisher signing - who are they left with for options? Gomez? Use useful resources to trade for a major question mark like Smoak? Signing Berkman might be the most logical backup plan at this point, but he's not even sure if he's going to play next year, and there are legitimate concerns about whether he's even healthy enough to play.

For the Red Sox sake I hope they don't overlook details they deem important (or important enough to delay this much making the signing official), just because they lost potential leverage by the diminishing fallback options. Otherwise why bother delaying it in the first place?
The other part would only be gaining more leverage as time goes by and the Red Sox would only have the chance of either signing inferior options or signing Napoli through a deal they don't seem comfortable in signing. Not making it official means they are trying to reword the contract or adding protection language, the delay so far means that Napoli's part is fighting it as much as they can.

If the Napoli signing falls thru, I'd certainly be interested in Smoak. He was a highly touted prospect with the Rangers and he went to the Seattle graveyard and his numbers were terrible. It wouldn't surprise me if his struggles in Seattle didn't extend to the road and play with his mind a little.
But, to me, he's about 26 years old, takes an occasional walk, and is in total need of a change of scenery. I still think, if out of Seattle, and given a chance elsewhere, can blossom into a decent to good player. And with absolutely no role for him in Seattle, he'd probably be cheap to acquire. If Napoli falls thru, I'd like to see the Sox go after Smoak. I think he'd be a different hitter here and he'd surprise a lot of people.

Post Jaso trade and Napoli signing, I think a Salty for Smoak+ deal makes sense.
And I like Smoak a lot more than Gomez in terms of potential Chris.

Don't think there's any way we get Smoak without throwing in a prospect. While the M's could use Salty, they have Zunino who will be almost MLB ready, so Salty becomes a backup pretty quick. You don't trade a 26 yr old 1B with power and a untapped talent for a backup C.
