I'm going to keep this trade possibility concise: Ellsbury and Salty to the Cincinnati Reds for Billy Hamilton, Tony Cingrani, Daniel Corcino, and Sam LeCure. This makes sense for the Red Sox and the Reds. Ellsbury and Salty are both in contract years and are unlikely to stick around after this year. Although Shin-Soo Choo is having a great offensive season, he is a bit of a liability in center field. Acquiring Ellsbury would make sense for them. They can put him in center and move Choo to left field where he is much more adequate defensively. Ryan Ludwick isn't back for along time so the Reds need another good outfielder. The Reds also do not have a very good catcher, so acquiring Salty makes sense for them. Also, it seems that the Reds have more of a chance of winning this year are probably more likely to be buyers. The players that the Sox could receive in return are all major-league ready prospects, with Cingrani already having success in the major leagues. Sam LeCure is already an effective reliever as well. Hamilton is among the fastest prospects in baseball. Corcino has had a shaky year at best, but the talent is still there. Plus, Bradley is looking really good right now and may be ready to take Ellsbury's spot soon. Lavarnway or Vazquez for Salty too.
How does this trade proposal sound?

I'd rather see Ells + Salty for Stephenson + Winker. Cingrani + Winker is more realistic though.

Ellsbury is that guy who's not playing well, hurt, and hitting free agency in less than four months, right? And Salty's the catcher we all hate? Ok, good luck with that...

We don't ALL hate Salty. And even if we did, that's not to say other teams wouldn't love to get him. You can say he hasn't lived up to what we expected. But look at the available FA catchers this year, and them's slim pickens. Outside of Brian McCann, there's little to chose from among the Pierczinskis, Blancos, Olivo and Molinas that are scheduled to file. Jarrod will command a good contract somewhere.

I don't think either gets traded without parameters of a contract in place, and neither strikes me as a target of the Reds otherswise. I just don't see it at all.
If you could tender players at the A level still, then sure, since both will get that. But you can't get picks for either if you trade for them, so unless Cincy wants to really start pushing their payroll up, I don't see how giving up Hamilton would make any sense at all.
It sounds like a lose-lose to me for both teams, but especially for Cincy. Cincy isn't Tampa, but they aren't the Yankees either. They have to look to the future, and that move hurts them long-term, and possibly short-term.

The question you should ask yourself: Are the players coming back more valuable than one/two 1st round pick(s)?

Agree with Hammerhead that its highly unlikley we are selling but If we are trading a MLB player to the Reds I'm going with Drew. We have Iglesias who might be better at this point and the Reds have a need. Looking at their farm I might would ask for Jesse Winker. 49th pick a few years ago and doing great in A ball. www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=sa657865&position=OF

Agree Salty and Ells are way to important to trade when we are WS contenders. Drew on the other hand COULD be replaced by Iglesias.

Salty yes. Ellsbury no. Ellsbury is key for us to win this year. Salty can be replaced. And why is he hitting in front of Carp today?

Salty accepts in a minute. His throwing and 35% K rate doom his chances. Look no further than Russel Martin last year and what he got and his defense is far superior. Agree with trying to unload Drew ASAP. Even if up to 50% of his remaining 4m+/- has to be absorbed to receive a better prospect.

The guy is as solid a fielder as we have had at short...pretty good range and a very accurate arm. Drew has a track record. We don't know what we have in Iglesias. He looks improved at the plate...better discipline and drives a few balls.. When Middlebrooks comes back Iggy stays. Earlier trip to Pawtucket didn't help him out. It's pretty clear that Ciriaco is the odd man out. Ells gives me the impression that he will follow the money. Hopefully Bradley will be ready next year and we can grab a draft pick. Salty was hitting about this well early last year then faded. He seems to have such an uppercut swing that he undercuts elevated fastballs and anything down in the zone off-speed he swings over. Still, power hitting catchers are few.

Drew may need to start sitting against LHP's. I don't think it's a big deal considering the stats, one year contract, handiness, and Iglesias's performance. Still, he has been remarkable for a shortstop against righties and that glove has been so consistently reliable (and despite SSS, UZR and DRS really confirm the eye-report) that he is too valuable to trade just because of Iglesias's encouraging/unsustainable start. Even if WMB takes a leap forward, losing Drew removes a very disciplined hitter and leaves 2 starters and a backup who are far from it (I'm far from convinced re: Iggy's solid approach and walks lately, and I don't even have to speak on WMB and Ciriaco...)

Yea keep Drew. Don't overlook the importance of wearing own pitchers by grinding out ABs. Taking one or to f those guys out of the lineup and replace them with quick outs/ABs then things change in a hurry. It's one of the best weapons against good pitching and in a series to screw up the pen.
Why would the Reds trade Cingrani?

Ellsbury ain't getting traded, nor Salty who looks like is having a season where you offer him a QF and he'd decline. I want at least one pick, it enables them to go after some free agents without worrying about picks.

Salty and Ells are more valuable to the Sox than any other team because of the first round pick that comes with them leaving in free agency that the recipient cannot have. As much as I want them to sell and acquire more prospects while playing the kids, they won't as long as they are in contention. If the team isn't contending, they will sell but they are looking like they will hold on to everyone who has any value on the trade market if they can help the team get to the playoffs

Boston traded Nomar in 2004. No clubhouse revolt. He was much more beloved than Ellsbury. I think you might be overestimating the reaction just a bit. I would not be so quick to assume Nomar was beloved in the Club House. Thats exactly what I was thinking. He wasn't a darling of the team mates or the management when he was traded. I remember reading about him sulking about contract issues and drawing boundary lines (imaginary or real who knows) and didn't want others crossing them etc. This trade is not going to happen but FWIW i read about players liking Salty and the leadership he has displayed etc but never read anything about Els and how much players like him etc. So I really dont think there will be revolt because of the players, but if they are in contention and they trade players from the MLB roster for prospects, then the remaining players can revolt for the dumbass move it could end up as.
