Solid deal for the Mets, they really don't lose any payroll flexibility at all. He goes from $16M in 2013 to a tick over $17M in '14 forward. He's probably going to have an interesting Hall of Fame case when he finishes up.

Agreed, and nobody should expect Cano to get to FA next year. Free agency classes are getting worse as more money flows into the industry and more teams lock up their elite players.

The Angels just acquired SP Tommy Hanson from Atlanta for RP Jordan Walden. Can anyone explain what I'm missing here? Between Kimbrel, Venters, and O'Flaherty, I don't see the need for another bullpen arm for the Braves. Again, I'm probably missing something, or maybe they're planning on flipping a reliever for another piece? Did they just want the payroll space that bad I guess?

My guess is that they plan to flip either Walden or one of the other relievers for a LF or 3B. It's almost impossible to explain any other way. Even the payroll explanation is weak - Hanson is due to get what, $1.8-$2 million in arbitration?
Also, with the Angels outfield defense (and expansive outfield in general) Hanson is a great fit there.

Could be because of medical stuff. Hansen has had shoulder issues and declining velocity and maybe this was the best that the Braves could do.

Hansen is 26 with lots of MLB experience. I would have loved to see us have a chance at him. Since when do you trade a young starter who has had solid success for a relief pitcher not a shut-down closer?

I haven't been paying as much attention to baseball the last year and a half but he most certainly has had a significant fall from grace.

Wonder if the Sox were involved by dangling Bard.

ARod said he always tries to listen to what his body is telling him and "my hips don't lie".

Apparently the hip surgery will be on his left hip (it was his right hip that he had surgery on in '09). Sherman gives June as an estimate of his return.
The chances he gets to 762 seem awfully slim at this point.

WHY is he waiting (to have the surgery) until January? I guess he doesn't want to miss the (complete) holiday cheer thing. Got to love this albatross that just weighs on everything the MFY do. I only wish the Yanks had a couple more contracts like this.

I forget who tweeted it, but someone referred to ARod needing to do "pre-hab" before undergoing surgery.

I only wish the Yanks had a couple more contracts like this. They kind of do. Sabathia's isn't nearly as bad, but he's owed $100M+ at 32 years old, which will probably look pretty bad in last 2 years of the deal. Teixeira's deal is fairly similar Sabathia's in value, but he's also started the downward trend already, and he no longer appears to even have the yearly "ceiling" of a superstar. That contract could potentially look awful for the last 3 years of it

I love that James Loney signed with Tampa. They totally deserve each other.

Loney's totally putting up a completely inexplicable .385 BABIP this year on his way to something like .345/.395/.475.

@ken_Rosenthal: Sources: Dan Haren in agreement with #Nationals, one year, $13M. Pending physical.
Haren actually makes 1.5 million additional dollars by the the Angels declining the option.

Wow! I never thought he'd get that much given his back issues and the risk that entails. Maybe that's why Cherington didn't jump in.
Goes to show how crazy the money is right now with the TV deals. But Nats are in a "win now" mode, so, in a way, its not surprising.
