Did you expect them to come out and literally say "Yeah, we want X or Y player"?

A flat-out denial that any conversations with the Phillies had taken place is pretty strong, especially since it comes out just a few hours after the initial article. Plus, King is not exactly known for the quality of his sources and the fact that the best he could do is "an industry source" likely means that it's just an agent spitballing.

King didn't say that "Boston was having conversations with the Phillies about Young", he said we'd let it be known that we'd be interested if he was made available which isn't the case at this precise moment.

The whole thing reeks of "well, they just demoted their third baseman, and Young plays third." (well, he stands near third base a lot anyway, I don't know if I'd call what he does playing third base)

Nah, to me the whole thing reeks of "the Yankees want him, so let's try to drive up the asking price by saying the Sox are desperate for the guy."

Nah, to me the whole thing reeks of "the Yankees want him, so let's try to drive up the asking price by saying the Sox are desperate for the guy." The thought crossed my mind too, but it's coming from a NY reporter, not one in Philly or Boston.

sounds like the "industry source" probably doesn't know what they are talking about. I know Middlebrooks has struggled, but even so, Drew won't be out for long and Iglesias can play 3rd, Middlebrooks is still a good player, and that's not even considering Bogaerts. 3 years ago it would be a different story, but I'm not sure how much of an upgrade he would be at this stage of his career. He was never exactly elite to begin with, just a solid guy. I wouldn't be interested unless he were real cheap.

Given that this report has been refuted, moving this to the trade discussion subforum.
