Walk away and then do what? Because other FA pitchers are not signing and teams will not trade their top SPs until Yamamoto goes somewhere. you don't know that. These guys (all of them) know what the market is. you come in with a premium offer with the guys you want and a deadline to accept. happens all the time in the world of negotiation. They will come back when it shakes out and they don't have what they like, see Nathan Eovaldi. There are a lot of options. You don't have to do that with everyone you might like. With this pitcher though, it makes sense to me. If Baseball has taught us anything, it is 1 guy is not gonna be the difference. See Ohtani, Strasburg....and the list goes on and on. Make your mark with above market deal and move on, if he doesn't like it.

I am ready to hate YY if he joins the Yankees. I’m actually fine with that, too. Someone’ll just have to be his daddy (lookin’ at you Raffy). I’m not overly worked up about this off season. What can you do? You make a big offer, you cross your fingers. Or you behave sanely regarding Shohei. Maybe next year won’t be great (though there is plenty of time to make big moves). That’s fine. I’ll say this though: if you gave me Montgomery and Snell, sure, I’d be nervous about the downside, but I’d mostly be psyched about getting that kind of infusion of pitching. Screw YY… those two slot 1/2 on this staff and make pitching a strength. apparently you have never heard of this guy. lol seriously, the FO apologist tour continues. The market and players are out there. I think this whole notion that the Sox or ml baseball has to wait on this unknown pitcher is kind of silly. Some of that exists, for sure, but there is more than 1 way to skin the proverbial cat. At least, when it comes to putting together a winning roster. Sometimes, walking away is the best decision a person can make.

i think we need to do a collective meditation exercise and think only of Yammy coming to the Sox every day for the next week.
Start at 8am tomorrow and do it every 6 hours, 10 minutes a session. Also, no fast foods allowed. If 10 people don't do this, he is not coming here.
Who's in ?

Getting nervous that Yamamoto goes to the Mets and the Yanks pounce on Montgomery. That isn't the only thing to be nervous about, as it appears as though Fenway is no longer a destination resort for baseball players. We could be in big trouble this year without some more roster turnover. Or maybe we won't because of the nature of Baseball, but I would rather see some movement on that with the club. I used to think the the teams and owners were the reason for the slow pace of the offseason, but nowadays I tend to think the players are an equal part of it. Baseball owners have a lot of money and maybe players are trying to use that to their benefit when it comes to making choices. It is hard to believe that Yamamoto doesn't already know where he wants to play.

I don't do deep dives into this stuff like a lot of people do around here, but it is hard for me to reconcile talk of Paxton wearing a Sox uniform again, even as a fallback position. We have a new leader, the last person he should be considering is the guy who pitched 96 innings in 2 years for us (and 1.1 total bWAR). And when i say last, I mean, last. I would hope he has more creativity than to make that choice. While technically sure this is all correct it's also leaving out a lot of context. Paxton was not really expected to pitch more than a handful of games if any in 2022 and in all honesty 1.1 bWAR in 19 starts and 96 innings is a relatively useful starter if extrapolated over the course of a full season. I'm not saying I want Paxton back but if it were a 1 year heavily incentive laden deal I'd be perfectly fine with him back as a rotation member. If it would take multiple years and a decent guaranteed amount then yes I'd be out on that. you can't close down options, I agree, and that is about as far as i would want to take this. Color me silly AF, but this is as much about changing the decision making process from where it has been the last 5 years. We already have a rotation next year, but we all hope for stronger TOR options. If we are going to go back end filler to strengthen the pitching, I personally would rather go with a flyer who has something to prove than a vet with his track record. Sounds like a knock on him, but it isn't. He tried with us and for that he gets my respect. I am hoping the Breslow is a little "braver" at this point, because I might lose my mind if he signed and we got the same ol, same ol from Paxton. Let another squad give him a shot.

why is him being non-tendered so controversial. He wasn't gonna be back in the clubhouse. If they didn't find a trade partner and weren't gonna go to arbitration with him, what else would they do ?
Maybe I don't understand the non-tender thing.

for all we know this was the best they could hope for in a trade for Verdugo. He was obviously shopped, and maybe there weren't any takers. He was a goner, that much is easy to surmise.
Less concerned about the return. I mean, how much is an historically 2War (or so) a year player worth in his last season before FA ?
Bres-Low Rider is a real goer.

Not sure why we really care what Verdugo does with the Yankees I think we are beyond that now considering our success the last 20 years and that there were 3 other teams ahead of them in 2023 in the east come on brother. MFY hatred is in our blood. If he hits a game winner against us, God forbid, it is gonna sting like a colony of wasps.

Not optimal because of the head to head games we play against the MFY. However, not too upset.
A tip of the cap to him on the way out the door. Yeah, always expected more, but there were some really great moments.
I will let you guys explain the return.

A few other tidbits from agents: Wasn't the conversation when Bloom was fired (from agents) that he was impossible to deal with? Which is it? you cant have it both ways mr "anonymous" agent i don't read those quotes as being anti-Bloom. More of a take on the ownership group. The Cora stuff doesn't sound all that different than what has been spoken before. I don't think Bloom was the right guy for this market, but I also don't think he was given the keys to the kingdom. Breslow talked with people as well, i am sure he knows what he is getting into. No reason to really be uncomfortable with any of this, IMO. He is gonna have to earn it, as he should have to.

Red Sox outfielder ZiPS WAR/600 projections: Verdugo - 2.2 Yoshida - 2.1 Rafaela - 2.0 Duvall* - 2.0 Duran - 2.0 Abreu - 1.9 Refsnyder** - 1.8 *Free agent **Platoon guy who would never get 600 PAs and it wouldn't scale this way I find it very unlikely they bring back all three of Duran, Rafaela and Abreu. I am team sell high on Duran. That BABIP regression is going to really sting and make him a lot less fun. His 2023 was a great watch though. but what about that XBABABIP luck thing (Extra Base after BABIP). Is it not worth something that an infield grounder become be a hit. A single / walk become a double. A double become a triple....you get my drift. Is that not worthwhile to keep over other, more expensive options. You all should be proud of me, I just invented a metric.

I don't get paid to decide who is going to run the Sox. So, therefore, i haven't given much thought to that. But I am a consumer of the product. I buy the MLB package to watch the Sox, buy Sox related gear, hell....I watch damn near every game. I even find time to participate in Red Sox related products , like say, Soxprospects.com, which is speaks directly to my interest in the Sox and their continued success. As such, I have an opinion on the hire. I am not going to him much rope, not because of him individually or his ideas, but because I feel like we have been here before. Yes, i have very clear ideas about "smart" guys. Again, I think that is a subjective term and has no real meaning in this hire. I will be more concerned that he is a productive POBO with success at the ML level, which is this consumer's primary concern. He will have to earn my trust, I won't give it out because he is Ivy league or had an impressive presser. So inflammatory responses, like this and cdj's, don't bother me, in case you were wondering. A more reasoned response, like was given by bloomstaxonomy (except for the Dombrowski part), is something that i can appreciate and welcome some reflection on my post because of it. He literally hasn’t done anything and you’re already complaining about him, it kind of invalidates any legitimate criticisms you may have of him down the road since it seems like you already have it out for the guy because he uses big words And FTR we *haven’t* been here before. This is incredibly new territory. I don’t understand how you can even make that claim. They hired a baseball player who won a WS here to run his first org. That is so far unlike any hire in recent memory. It’s nothing like Bloom or DD or even Cherington or Theo. Quite literally the only reason you think this is the same road as before is because he uses big words and math. like cmon . Double FTR nobody is crowning Breslow as a great POBO because he’s smart. It’s just silly to start talking about how he has no slack before he even does anything. Like maybe let the ink dry on his deal and wait for one (1) move before starting to do that. bro, you lumped me in with the WEEI crowd. Couple of facts. I don't listen to WEEI or sports talk radio. Don't watch Colin Cowherd, Jim Rome, Rich Eisen or any of them, lest i have some extra TV time to spare and want a change of pace. I have over 12k posts and we routinely are on the game thread posting. I would think you would know me better. I responded in kind. No harm, No foul to me.

Jerry can you clarify your issue with him exactly? When you say we’ve been here before do you mean with an Ivy League guy in charge? A guy who embraces analytics? Which part of it is chafing you exactly is my question a couple more posts on this subject and i exit stage left. I don't have an issue with him, i said as much in a one of the posts. I gave him credit for being open minded about staffing changes. I don't particularly like the hire because he doesn't have the experience that I would like to see. That pretty much sums it up as far as him. I don't feel it is necessary to buy into what he sold to ownership to get the job. IF he had experience, actually running a club, then maybe I would feel differently. That may seem unfair to him, but it is perfectly reasonable to say, as a matter of fact, I bet he would agree. I will let him show me how good he is. And that segways into the whole Harvard / analytics / "smart" thing. We just got done with it. I think Bloom was a very smart guy, maybe too smart, and I spent the last 2 years shaking my head at what i was watching. An Ivy graduate is part of a fraternity, they take care of each other. That isn't always good. And we have seen practically ever hire in the past 10 years over MLB be some kind of mathematical genius. That is partially hyperbolic for effect, but i hope you understand what i am saying. It does n't impress me anymore, because i have seen dilution of how the game is played itself and most guys aren't successful. Hope that explains it better. I like the fact that he was a former player, although I can attest to having awful Breslow relief appearance PTSD. Maybe that is part of what is going on here.

I will take the bait. How do we know he is smart ? Because he is Ivy league ? Or do you mean anyone who is "smart" when you are referring to the bold. I am a college graduate, attended some Masters program back in the day. I am fairly smart, and fairly dumb, at the same time. It is strange to me that this guy is being called smart. We can't take the word of his former employers, particularly Theo, who have personal relationships with him. Their word really doesn't mean much, despite their ego's thinking it does. This guy is a blank canvas. He has never spent a day in his current position. He won't re-invent the wheel, but there really is not a wheel to re-invent anymore. This leadership position, throughout MLB, has been so streamlined to a certain type of person, that it seems like a bunch of people exercising in groupthink. Really, the biggest success' of the new crop of thinkers has to be make the game boring to watch and suppress players salaries. I don't like this hire, really. I think it was done out of unavailability of preferred candidates. I am not really willing to give the guy any rope, either. I have heard this story many times and seen a lot failed "smart" candidates. Besides, I think being smart can mean many different things. I do like that he is considering FO change, which seems entirely appropriate at this point. Just going into this one with my eyes wide open You're not willing to give him any rope? Who the eff did you want running the org that you would give some rope?? I don't get paid to decide who is going to run the Sox. So, therefore, i haven't given much thought to that. I have heard this story many times and seen a lot failed "smart" candidates. Besides, I think being smart can mean many different things. I do like that he is considering FO change, which seems entirely appropriate at this point. Just going into this one with my eyes wide open I’d say it’s more the “anyone who is smart” type. As an aside, the handful of people I know who have met him—who are plenty bright themselves—have unanimously said that he very clearly is extremely intelligent and seems to be a gracious person. To be clear, I’m talking about the people up in arms and already convinced he’s doomed to fail based on the fact that he uses big words like “synthesize” and “leverage” while being analytically inclined, and not much else. I think it’s perfectly reasonable to have some doubts about him given his lack of experience, and he himself seems to think the “smartest guy in baseball” stuff is a little silly, but these people are on another level. It’s not a bad thing that he’s up-to-date with the way data is used in the game. It’s even better that he’s used that knowledge to make himself a viable MLB pitcher! But like JD said, this portion of the fanbase really isn’t worth the brain power to be upset at, so I will continue on with my life ignoring them. Edit: I do think it’s a little ridiculous to say that the recommendation of Theo Epstein, of all people, doesn’t matter much. Who in the world is more capable of making that judgment? Certainly not soxprospects.com users chaimtime and jerrygarciaparra. OK. appreciate the response. Hope he has some humility, because he is gonna need it. There really isn't enough information, just like life, to make decisions without an understanding that you can and will being wrong a majority of the time. I stand by the Theo comments. It isn't really about his judgment, it is more about his personal relationship with him, which creates bias. Their dynamic has no meaning in Boston, a totally different town / fanbase. And he has been gone long enough to not really know much about the environment here at this time as well. I mean, he recommended Cherington, which had good points, but is the same kind of dynamic. We are not in the mix, so of course, he knows more than us. But if we were, we may come to a different conclusion than he did.

There seems to be a pretty sizable portion of the fan base that thinks it’s a bad thing that the guy running the team is smart. Were these people dropped on their heads or something?
