It seems like a long time in which we had a series of games on tap with such interesting starters. Tonight, Mother Nature permitting, should be fun to follow!

Sorry if I missed it, but does anyone have the minor league spring training schedule? It's earlier in the thread (here). Thanks so much sittingstill!

So pumped about Swihart. They are gonna have one of the best benches in the league. Blake is one of my favorites also, but I have to admit I can't see a clear way for him to make the 25. His value has always been as a catcher who is a switch hitter. In his few brief moments in the big leagues, he has not looked that good at the plate to see him as a viable corner outfielder. His bat may play up strongly if he is behind the plate, but potentially no where else. The way he has been handled upsets me greatly. His value has been diminished because of lack of experience and reps behind the plate. I do NOT want him to be traded, but that may be the only option eventually. I'd love to see him have a great spring while catching...and he takes Leon's place, but I doubt that is in the cards.

I don't always agree with DD, but I have to hand it to him on this one. I really like the contract JDM is signing. It is about time teams found a better way to sign top free agents and not have to take on such ridiculous risk, at top dollar, at the end of a contract. Very creative by DD and Boras. I'm sure this is the type of contracts we will be seeing more and more of.

Very strange and kind of stupid. The Rays traded for CJ Cron and designated Corey Dickerson for assignment. Corey Dickerson is a good hitter. Surprised the Rays would throw him overboard for Cron. Somebody should get a bargain in Dickerson. Looks like the Rays didn't want to pay Dickerson in arbitration so they cut ties. Like I said, somebody should get a productive still young player. What happened last night with the Rays looks like Derek Jeter is running this operation also. Simply amazing that they end up losing two serviceable players and pretty much get nothing back. Brillant!

8 yrs at 140/million. Whats the big deal? By the time that contract plays out, if the guy hit 280/350/630 it will probably be a bargain. I mean this contract doesn't bode well for the players. I can't wait until the players strike next and hold these cheap bastards accountable. Looking at the contract Hosmer signed, it is not a winner by any description. I guess Boras will do some crowing, but really Hosmer did not do all that well at all. Boras will yell 8 years, but the last 3 are for $39 mill! He can state $140 for the life of the contract, but that is over 8 years. IMO, Hosmer ended up taking an inferior contract, and Boras did not do Hosmer anything special. This is probably the week JDM signs now. Hope DD has the creativity to pull something like this contract off also!

It is simply amazing that Boras and JDM feel he is worth more than the reported 5 years and $125. As was mentioned, Martinez could easily miss games once again, which is sort of an MO of his, and lose quite a bit of value if he took a pillow contract of one year.
IMO, Boras is not leveling with JDM and giving him all the facts. I hate it, even if for teams I don't necessarily like, see a player leave millions because of bad advice and never get it back. Their careers are short, and they really need good advice and not a lot of bluffing and finger pointing.

I'm getting to really wonder about JDM and his thinking!
Here is a guy who was released and in the trash bin just 4 years ago (maybe 5). Here is a guy who the Tigers valued, not that highly, that took a poor return for moving him to Arizona LAST YEAR. Here is a guy who inflated his numbers because he played in a place where the ball took off. AND now is insulted because a team is willing to give him complete life time security with a contract at or around $125 million.
Here is a guy who does one thing well and has trouble staying on the field, and he wants to be upset about the Red Sox and their supposedly being inflexible!
JDM.....wake up....there is no competition for your services! $25 million per year for a DH is outrageous. Those figures already look like an overpay to many fans, teams, and probably players.
Boras sold you a tale. And by permitting stories to come out that you are upset with the Red Sox for not bidding against themselves, you are setting yourself up for a rocky reception in Boston. WAKE UP!!

Good stuff jmei..that confirms my beliefs. I don't remember a FB waste high and middle-in that Devers pulled with authority...off-speed and lower..yes. He has very good bat speed..no question..but greatest power is always to the pull side.. I hope Devers evolves to be able to pull middle-in while continuing to deliver middle-out to left/left center. If he does, he will probably develop into a 35 plus homer kind of guy. This year will be interesting in how Devers handles a full year in the majors. I'm sort of expecting a (still) pro-longed transition. I wouldn't be surprised, if we see his real capabilities in 2019. IMO I would see him hit about 25 bombs, and have a line of .270/.330/.480/.810 this upcoming season. Certainly I hope he puts up stronger numbers in 2018. I just think a 1st full season in Boston is hard to comprehend.

Let me be real clear. In a perfect world we would sign Martinez for 5 years at a rate of no more than $25 mill (or less), but there is a limit to how far DD goes...and there should be! Extending are own players is hugely important, if we are going to continue to be competitive.
If DD or anyone on this board is not thinking of alternatives, you are not being realistic.
Yes Santana may be costly. At 25 years old, with a lot of control, and a very productive season behind him, Santana is worth thinking about and not being closed minded about.
SIGN JDM, but how far is too far? Think creatively. We could send Porcello to Milwaukee, and sign Arrieta. If DD is as good as most people think, he is several hundred steps ahead of us. Santana is an idea. I do know one thing, we need a power bat.

Domingo Santana 6-5, 220lb Born: August 5, 1992 (Age: 25-174d) WAR 3.0 BA .278 HR 30 RBI 85 SB 15 OBP .371 SLG .505 OPS .875 OPS+ 126 For whatever reason, the Brew Crew seems to be fine with moving Santana: www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/01/brewers-trade-rumors-domingo-santana-keon-broxton.html Yes they are looking for starters. I would think after the two upgrades the Brewers have made yesterday, that they may have a possible opening for us. Santana is MUCH cheaper, MUCH younger, and less of a deficit in the outfield than one JDM. I would prefer JDM, but if Boras and JDM are not going to budge from their, IMO, crazy demands....maybe Santana could fit in real well and give us 75 to 80% of one JDM. Ideas???

I'm personally swinging for the fences.....Bobby Dalbec!!
If he ever figures out a better 2-strike plan and starts using the whole field, he has the potential to be a fast riser. He has so many tools, but some serious "holes". I guess if Mark Reynolds can do it, then Bobby can also. He plays a premium position, has a great arm, and immense power. BUT sadly, if he doesn't have that light bulb come on and figure how to layoff that breaking ball outside and how to approach a 2 strike count....well I will pick someone else (LOL).
IF Chatham is finally healthy and plays a full season, he will be the best bet.
I'm personally psyched about following: Alex Scherff, Brett Netzer, and Tyler Esplin.

Yonder Alonso has signed (I believe with the Indians). Morrison being left handed is not ideal IMO. If JD doesn't sign with us, I'd go after Nunez.

So J.D. Martinez is looking for 60 and 180 instead of 7 and 210 now. This is ridiculous. What a "discount." For a player who can't play the field and has a hard time staying healthy. Don't worry, this non-sense will go on until spring training people. He is a DH and wants to be paid like he is David Price. Offer 6 and 150 and don't be afraid to walk away. THIS is as far as I would go with him HAVING to have his 6th year. It is amazing someone who is a liability in the field (and will get worse), doesn't play everyday (because he gets hurt), and is considered a poor base-runner thinks they should get $30 mil a year for that long. WOW. I can't believe anyone will pay him that kind of money for a probably poor left-fielder. Leftfield is not considered one of the top skill positions either. JD would look ridiculous in Fenway's righfield.

This has been mentioned before, but our rotation is too lefty! I'm not in favor of extending Pomeranz and believe he will regress this year. I would love to see us pick up a solid righty to balance out the set of starters. The Yankees will love hitting against our rotation other than Sale (and hopefully a healthy Price). Pomeranz is a FA after this year. Do you all believe he will win 15 games this year? Do you think his ERA will be well below 4.00 this year?
Sign Martinez, move Pom, and sign someone like Lynn for reasonable dollars. I love Cobb and have seen him a lot, but I don't think we can afford both Cobb and JDM.

Drew Pomeranz David Price (opt out) Craig Kimbrel Joe Kelly Hanley Ramirez (vesting option 497ab) They say players contract have something to prove. More like they have something to earn ($$). The Sox have 5 of them. Maybe Pom sticks with his cutter and wins 20 and stays healthy. A PO'd David Price who doesn't like being in Boston stays healthy and he throw 200inn and wins 20 and opts out and saves the Sox 30m to put towards resigning Sale. Kimbrel just needs to do the same as he did in 2017 and Sox fans would be good with that. Joe Kelly stays consistent and becomes the the 8th inning guy and just for entertainment throw a 107mph fastball. Hanley could stay healthy and be clutch AND stays under 497ab and saves 22m to put towards resigning Kimbrel. Then throw a half year of a Pedroia that has something to prove. WORLD CHAMPIONS!! In my opinion, the only person I want "back" is Kimbrel. I'm not a huge believer in Pomeranz. I don't believe he will hold up year after year, and I would not be surprised if he turned into a .500 pitcher this upcoming season. I HOPE David Price has his best year ever and totally dominates.....and then ops out. I can't see him ever being completely happy in Boston, and I would rather we could use that savings to go after other talent. I hate to say it, but Kelly will never figure things out totally. Hanley? I would call a cab right now if I could, but hopefully (as a part-time player) he gives us solid numbers in 2018....and has less than 497 at bats. We need badly, after this season, to start extending people like Betts, Sale, and Kimbrel. I would love for Xander to put it together, and we have to extend him. I really like that kid. Bradley? Wait one more year.

It's midnight here and the temperature is 26. Doesn't seem all that cold to me. The next time it hits 26 here I might be tempted to throw on some shorts and catch a tan. There is a reason why my wife and I moved to SW Florida guys. My neighbors were pissed off because we had several days last week in a row that never went over 55 degrees. As my favorite stable philosopher said, that is "SAD"!

I think Martinez is signed by the end of the winter meetings. 6/156 is my guess (which was admittedly also Dave Cameron's). I would think Dave is trying real hard on not adding the 6th year, so I will throw out 5 years at $27 mill per yr with an option for the 6th with a buy out for about $8 million. That comes to $143 million guaranteed. I acknowledge Boras will keep pushing, but I'd hate to see JD get 6 years. My guess may be real close it looks!

OK....I'm sure this "option" will be panned quickly because of this player's defensive woes and poor OBP, but how about if Boras doesn't come down on his demands for Martinez we consider one.....wait for it......Matt Kemp. Now hear me out.
The poor Dodgers are over a barrel. Kemp doesn't want them, and they don't want Kemp. MLB Rumors has an interesting mention of this dilemma.
Indeed, per Heyman, “the trade market for Kemp is believed to be virtually nonexistent at the moment.” That’s hardly surprising, of course. Atlanta no doubt would have moved Kemp previously if there had been an opportunity. He’s worth nothing close to what’s left on his contract, which has been traded three times already.
Still, we heard recently about the possibility of the Dodgers including prospects as an inducement to another organization to take over a portion of the Kemp deal. Just how much cash might move off the L.A. books would surely depend upon the quality of the prospect(s) up for the bidding, with any such deal potentially representing an interesting look at the market valuation of some young talent.
