So, if they start next year in AA will they not be subjected to the frigid cold? Benintendi seems like the one to get promoted first. This is just a guess. Who would be moved up from Greenville to fill Benny's slot? Right now, Joseph Monge looks like the best candidate. Alex B. is getting off to a slow start, so maybe Monge, though still only 20, has moved away in the Drive outfield. Tough question unless they send someone from Portland down to Salem. Monge has been losing ABs recently to Metheny. Basabe has picked up his offensive game. He now sports a .755 OPS but, he's young, no rush. Washington is doing great but he's a left fielder. Maybe a good time to delay by using an org guy. For me, because of Kyri Washington's age, I'd promote him. He is showing some real potential with the bat. Like to see what he would do.

Understand the team choosing Henry Owens now, but I place my money on Brian Johnson. Johnson has had some terrible luck and timing over the last couple of years. He is so much more consistent, and IMO we down play his "stuff" too much. I like Henry and am rooting for him to secure a spot in our rotation (for good), but the outcome is very much up in the air.
I can see this change of events (Kelly on DL) be a boon instead of a minus. Kelly to me is ticketed for the pen.

Now THAT was a beautiful ball game. LOVE CV and the attitude change that seems to have just happened over night.
News Break: I like watching Hanley play (and enjoy) baseball. Never thought I would ever say that.

In an auction-type situation with multiple bidders, leverage is not really based off what his current team can use him for, but what the other bidders could use him for. Even if he doesn't have a role at the major league level for the Red Sox, as long as multiple other teams still strongly value him, the Red Sox will still have plenty of leverage. Agreed. Swihart (the catcher) and another piece (oh I wish it was Panda - lol) may be able to get the pitcher we need behind Price. I do think with Swihart now (potentially) available, the A's and the Indians (to name just two teams) will be more open up to trading one of their young pitchers. Billy Beane is so hard to figure out. Sonny Gray as a number 2 would be great, but it may be possible. Too little, too much, or just right for Sonny Gray.......Swihart, Owens, and Castillo (we pay half)?

Agree that if Blake is traded this season it will be for a potential #2. But I also believe we shouldn't be in any hurry. I'd like to see Swihart catch almost every day in Pawtucket and hopefully rake. He has always been one of my favorite prospects, but it is evident after Friday night that unless Vazquez gets hurt.....he is the future behind the plate now (not a bad thing).
WHAT a game he had. Swihart's worth drops big time if he doesn't catch. If you want him to dabble as a left-fielder, OK, but don't decrease his value on the trade front.
Let Swihart catch pretty much every day, improve, and supply depth for the next 6 to 8 weeks. MAYBE we move him at the deadline, but get his value up and keep that safety valve in AAA in case we need him.
As I said, I'm a big fan, but CV makes our club more solid now and probably in the future (and it is hard for me to come to that conclusion as I have a crush on Swihart).

What I like so far is the ability of our line-up to keep the pressure on. For the last couple of years, it seemed like when we got behind we had little or no chance to come back. Some very positive trends so far: 1) relentless offense, 2) deep bull pen, 3) a smarter game management from Farrell (?), 4) and a team with some moveable parts that gives us options.
Don't disregard the starting pitchers we have faced so far and how we have not stopped.

Best day of the year, as far as I'm concerned. Same here. It does not get any better! Worse day......minor league season ends and the Sox aren't going to the playoffs.

did price get enough work this spring? His fastball lacked life today, like it was March 1st instead of March 30th. I was at this game myself, and actually had the same take. I left telling myself......this is just Spring Training and he will rev it up in Cleveland. His control was not crisp and his fastball did not explode. Even the outs were real loud. I'm sure when the real season starts he will be great, but he was not impressive yesterday.

It is like some of you never saw Shields pitch! He is very competitive and usually has very good command of his complete arsenal. He possesses one of the better change-ups, decent velocity on his fastball (93+), and a decent breaking ball. And even more importantly, which not all of you are giving him enough credit, great dependability. Yes, for him he had a bad year last year.
Let me ask you this, who would you like to go to battle with......Panda or Shields? Who would like in the club house....Panda or Shields?
Please don't make a silly point about us having to come up with a significant prospect to soothe poor-old Preller to consider the trade. Panda is 29 (maybe going on 39), and Shields is 34. Add some money? Possibly...but remember Preller REALLY wants to move James.

If you were Preller, why wouldn't you be talking to Dombrowski? Think about it Agreed! Don't under-estimate how much Preller wants to move "Big Game" Shields. The Padres need a 3rd baseman, and they don't want to pay Shields for another 3 years. I could see a straight-up. So this is what you should ask: who would you rather have? I'd take Shields any day over Mr. 17%.

I can honestly see Rusney Castillo going to Pawtucket for a month to play everyday and try to find himself offensively. Young and Holt as a platoon will be solid for awhile, maybe even for longer. Castillo has yet to show any real ability to impact the baseball consistently. He needs to play everyday.

Went back to the write-up on Sam Travis here yesterday. Not terribly inspiring. But I do not understand how his "hit tool" is not above average! He has not only looked real good this spring, but has been a consistent .300 plus hitter every season. Yes his homer total is not where we would like it, but that is not his hit tool. I believe many of us are under estimating this kid.
Certainly he may not be a 25 to 30 home run guy. I get that, but he squares the ball up consistently and has been a doubles machine. Other than his speed on the base-paths, he is pretty solid. We would be very happy, eventually, with a guy who handles 1st pretty well and can put up a line like .290/.340/.430. I like the way he plays the game, and I would not be surprised if he becomes a solid piece of our club in 2017 or 2018.

Wright is also out of options so to me it makes all the sense to keep him on roster right? IMO he is a sure thing at this moment, especially with Erod on the disabled list to start the season.

First let me say "I'm not a Panda fan"!
Unless is so ineffective defensively, the guy will get more than 6-weeks whether I or you like him. I believe Travis Shaw would be OK at 3rd, but his range will never be elite either. I like the way Shaw is using the whole field this spring. He showed last year over the 2nd half that HE DOES HAVE SOME POWER. Personally that surprised me. I have definitely been a culprit on here on bashing his chances. I admit I am wrong about him being a serviceable player in the majors.
Even so.....I'm not sold quite yet he is the answer yet at a corner infield spot for the Sox. I do like his versatility. I think this is his "card" to eventually getting into the line-up on a consistent basis. I would be SHOCKED if he doesn't make the 25.
I think his best chance of wrestling the 3rd base job away from Pablo "17%" Sandoval is to take total advantage of his opportunities at 1st, 3rd, and left. If 17% is as poor as last year and Shaw plays well over the1st 2 to 3 months, Farrell (or who ever is manager) will insert him on a regular basis at 3rd. Travis Shaw, maybe unfairly, will have to fight for every minute on the field this year. He was not a top prospect nor was he a player the Sox had great hopes for. Because of this and 17%'s salary.....we will all have to wait...and hope that 17% has a resurgence.

I was at the game yesterday - Barnes quietly looked pretty impressive. Pedroia had a few nice line drive 2 baggers. Bradley's arm in mid season form. Barnes has a nice line so far. I really believe he'll be at least a good reliever. I'd still like to see his fastball command improve, but I'd agree. The biggest thing for me is he can throw a good breaking ball over for a strike when he needs it. If he can do that alone, his 4-seamer plays up just because of velocity. I keep hoping he becomes a "Daniel Bard" type, but that is probably wishful thinking.

Unless I've missed it, I'm surprised we haven't heard to what extent Kopech's injury will keep him out. If anyone has any info, I'd appreciate it.
