Red Sox are reportedly looking at Jon Jay. Would be a good lefty to platoon with Young and can back up all three OF positions. Plus he is a rental and wouldnt cost much in prospects. In my opinion, Nick Markakis, Gerardo Parra, and Jon Jay are who we should be focusing on. None of them should cost much in prospects, all of them would be good platoon options, all are left-handed hitting, and all of them are solid teammates. Some of the players that have been thrown around above would balk at being in a platoon. I'd actually like Markakis.

I just happened to watch Arizona-Miami in College World Series Bracket game recently. I wasn't impressed by Bob Dalbec's 2 bats. He striked out by chasing two strikes in high upper & wide out of strike zone. Then, he ground out to SS in next bat. I missed his earlier at bats. Based on I watched him batting twice, I think the FO should not offer him more than $350K from Round 4 (Slot $501,300). I don't really excited by him as the Red Sox 3B prospect if he signs with the RS. He's free swinger. Sorry to tell you negative about him. I don't know what's the factor for the FO to draft him. 70, possibly 80 power. And pitching as a fallback. 4th rounders have a pretty low chance of making it to MLB, so they swung for the fences, so to say. As a 4th rounder, I actually liked the pick. How many Division 1 players are capable of doing all that he can do. As for his season, take a look at what he did as a sophomore. The kid does have some strong tools (hitting for power and a very strong arm), and yes he has some negatives....but I think he may be more than some are giving him credit for.

Just came from Lowell. Kopech really has the swagger of an ace, and I'm so pleased I had the opportunity to see him pitch. If you believe the radar gun at LeLacheur Park (I don't), he hit 101 in the first inning, but never touched that again. For the rest of the outing he was mostly 91-95, occasionally touching 97. He was also clearly working on his secondary pitches, with mixed results. He threw a lot of pitches in 4+ innings, walked four, gave up four hits, no runs. His tempo really slowed with men on base, which made for a very slow-moving game. Overall, pretty good, and I fully expect to see him pitching in Boston in a couple of years. Yoan Aybar can really fly. If anyone knows how Jagger Rusconi got his name, I'd like to hear the story. Thanks. I actually spent a couple of innings talking with Jagger's parents at a GCL game. I asked them about his unusual name......and you probably guessed it......they love the Stones and Mick Jagger. I'm forever grateful to my parents they didn't do that to me. Can you see yourself named Meatloaf because they liked his music?

Ball wasn't awful today. Pretty good, actually. Still 3K's, 2BB's isn't exciting. Just 7-5 for the GO/FO ratio. Still no runs on 4 hits in 5.1 innings. Eric should have stayed another day. Poyner got lit up, though. Still, Salem Sox won thanks to Moncada, Dubon, Devers, Mars, and Monge all going 2-4. Devers had triple and Mars had 2 triples. That is the problem with our perception of Trey Ball.....little swing and miss. 3 K's don't excite anyone at this level. Still he is 21 and has gotten a little better each season. I guess will have an ace by the time he celebrates his 45th birthday. I'd love to know what his weight is now. He is still listed as 185. Love to get that boy at 200 at least.

Any chance Mike for us to get this senior for a lot less than slot? Steve Nogosek $281,100 I do like this pick, but I would guess his options are few. Nogosek is a junior Then I guess his write-up is wrong. www.soxprospects.com/players/nogosek-steve.htm

Buchholz drives us all crazy, but I would not be surprised if he has an OK 2nd half. I hope the front office (DD) does not even think about trading our top 4 prospects. This organization has the potential to be really good for 5 years+ without having to worry much about free agency.
I'm most disappointed that Brian Johnson is not available as this time. I honestly can say he could be a great #5....a real innings eater. I've always liked him better than Henry Owens and Matt Barnes as a future rotation fixture.
I can see DD picking up someone like Jeremy Hellickson who is making a come-back this season and has pitched very effectively in the AL East for Tampa.
A lefty reliever who can get out BOTH lefties and righties is a must for me.

Don't know how all of you forecasted this season for Xander, but I was expecting a slight regression. I was actually hoping he would not fall too much, as pitchers figured some stuff out, to say an average of .290 with a small uptick in power to say maybe 12 to 14 homers. Boy do I look stupid now!
The "jump" from 2014 to 2015 was amazing. This year the jump has been even more so! I loved what I saw last year, but there was a lot of soft grounders and pop flys hit primarily to the right side. I figured teams would start to shade him that way and take away some of those "cheap" hits he got. He isn't getting a lot of cheap hits this year IMO. Love how he has made it almost impossible for a team to play him one way. The power has really been impressive with him showing 20 doubles and 8 homers after just 61 games. If you extrapolate those figures over 162, you get 53 doubles and 21 homers.
An amazing thing, his base running sometimes is even more impressive. As several folks have said, he has a HIGH baseball IQ. Sort of scary for the American League to think he may just be scraping the surface. Nomar is my all-time favorite shortstop, but Xander looks like he is already a better all-around SS now.

“@billkoch25: #PawSox manager Kevin Boles said Joe Kelly left tonight’s start with right groin injury. Felt something pitch before his last of the night.” He's got great stuff though. THAT will be on his tomb stone!

Kelly's outing not quite as meh as it looks; they went 4/7 on GB against him, including an infield hit. 4.2 6 3 3 1 5, remove the bad BABIP luck and it's 5.1 IP, 4 H, and 1 or 2 runs. He also turns 28 tomorrow. There's just no way I'm going to be impressed or encouraged by "hey, that 28-year-old with 500 MLB innings was only some BABIP luck away from being good enough to beat the Toledo Mud Hens." Agree. I have (almost) given up on him. I know we really need the starting depth, but he really has shown he is never going to be THE answer. He cannot be consistent from inning to inning. Non-starters fail in being able to get thru a line-up multiple times. He is a bullpen pitcher....who MAY be able to help us in short doses.

A Prediction: Beni and Moncada put their pedal to the metal starting tonight. Beni with a double and a run scored on 1st at bat, and Yoan gets a hit to start the game and promptly steals number 34. It has been rough lately with them not going on tears. Hold on to your seats fellows!

Very interested in Joe Kelly tonight, see how much of his impressive performance carries over. Me also! Could definitely, although I think the decision has been made, solidify the replacing of Clay Buchholz. It certainly would be nice if we had someone going each day who gave us a solid chance to WIN. I'm so disappointed in Clay.

Excited as everyone about the upcoming draft, and I personally would love to see us get either Braxton Garrett or Blake Rutherford. Both are already well-developed physically and have solid upside. I like Andersen also.

I understand the potential qualms some of you may have about Matt Harvey after the last several starts, but Harvey is just 27, is making $4.325 million this year, and has 2 more arb years before reaching free agency after the 2018 season. Certainly if you think THIS is Harvey now, you may not want to consider trading for him, but I love his competiveness and stuff (when he is right).
The New York Mets have 3 other current, or close to being, aces now in DeGroom, Syndergard, and Matz. Zack Wheeler is close himself to coming back. Would there ever be a better time for us to interest the Mets in parting with Harvey? I don't think so.
What would interest the NY Mets? I'm not one who likes to trade top prospects, but I'd like to see what it would take. Let me start with us moving our problem child Clay Buchholz, along with Rafael Devers, and Teddy Stankewitz. Devers gives them a David Wright replacement and Stanky is someone they drafted earlier (and liked) who could be a 5th starter and innings eater for them in a couple of years. I could see Clay having a reversal pitching in their stadium and without a DH to worry about.
I think Harvey's problems can be fixed and he could, at the least, be a strong bounce-back candidate for 2017. Ideas?

Swihart is easily one of my favorite prospects also. The situation is complex to say the least for how he can get back to Boston this year in my opinion. I disagree that he can't improve in Pawtucket as a catcher. I'm not, at all, crazy about him moving around position wise at this time. His value is, as you said, behind the plate. Not sure what the outfield experiment is about. To me he needs to put ALL of his time and focus into to being the best backstop he can be.
I have always been a big supporter of Blake, and dream on his potential of being an elite 2-way catcher. Maybe an All-Star! But.....the way this is heading, I think he will eventually be traded for an upgrade in our rotation. That possible trade may not happen until this winter, but I can see things heading that way.
As much as I love Blake Swihart, the Sox and their current success are more important. Vazquez is a real force behind the plate, and it will very difficult for Blake to take the job back as things stand. Christian is also quite young, so the Sox future is still in good hands. I hate predicting a Blake Swihart trade, but it may be the best thing, eventually, for the Red Sox and Blake's career. I just wish they quit screwing around with his playing leftfield.

It seems to me Price is getting to 0-2 or 1-2 and then can't put them away. His lower velo is one reason, but his command has been un-Price. It is mystifying want has happened for the 1st 5 weeks of the season. I'm so used to watching in Tampa control a game and often dominate a line-up.

He needs to start at Pawtucket for several reasons. He is NOT one of the top 5 options currently. We need the depth for our rotation. His value is not high at this moment, so moving him is a big waste. I agree with most of you, his velocity and a solid secondary would make him pretty effective in the bull pen.
By starting him in AAA, it gives us the time to see how Erod, Henry, and Johnson are going to fit in and be ready. If 2 of them are able to give us solid innings and look dependable by the All-Star break, I'd consider moving him finally into the pen.

Good to see Eduardo Rodriguez pitch better tonight. His final line is skewed a lot because of that bad 1st inning topped of by a 2-run homer, but his final line was 6.0 innings 5 hits 3 runs 3 earned runs 0 walks 3 k's......and his pitch count up to 84. Maybe one more start and he MAY be ready.

Beni has proven in basically 4 months of professional baseball that he has some (very) above level skills. My biggest hope entering this season, minor league wise, was for Moncada and Bennitendi to move fast and swiftly through the system. Both should be in AA now. They need to find out what new adjustments have to be made to keep progressing. A+ is not where either should be at. I was fine with their initial placement at the end of Spring Training, because of the cooler weather in Portland and wanting them to start fast, but the front office, IMO, is dragging their feet now.
I do have some understanding with Moncada with respect to his defense. He is still making too many errors and probably mental errors for my appetite. But these things can be worked on just as easily in Maine as in Virginia. It looks like his base running (base stealing) is going to be a big plus for the Sox once he gets there. I would love for him to cut down on his K percentage too, but this kid has already improved his patience at the plate and his OBP is unworldly. He needs to see better pitching. Bennitendi needs to see better pitching. Portland needs a transfusion of talent (what a difficult team to watch currently).

Hate to get involved with this......but Bennitendi is wasting his time in Salem. What is the reason to wait any longer to promote him and challenge him in Portland? When Portland feels compelled to start Henry Ramos in center, it is not because someone is "blocking" Beni. I some what get keeping Moncada back for a few extra weeks, but what is Beni learning by continually showing in high A that he does NOT belong there? God knows Portland could use an influx of talent on that team. Release Beni!!! No....not that type of release.
