The thing is, it's all predictable (and predicted). The blame rests with Henry, and I'd love to know what he's thinking now (and whether he was even asked for his input)

Isn't Guerra projected as a preseason top 100 prospect?

Wonder how Hazen feels / what his communication with DD was like on this deal. I'm guessing it mostly involved making sure DD coffee stayed filled while he was on the phone with Preller. why listen to Hazen, when you have Wren as consigliere?

Kimbrel's contract is pretty much equal to Miller's remaining contract - they could have just signed him

Well, it turns out the dombrowski skeptics have been proven correct - absurd price to pay for a reliever (coming off his worst season no less)

fangraphs WAR (which ignores run prevention) 1.5 3.1 3.8
And @jimed's larger point is correct - not a Sale or Fernandez
PS - to trade Betts for Gray would be a war crime

This wasn't a win-now move by the Angels; Simmons is under contract at 5/50; Eppler probably calculated that his otherworldly glove is worth more than the difference between Newcomb and his replacement (probably a second-tier FA signing). He might be right

This whole "everyone thought he'd gut the FO" is such a strawman. Who exactly wrote that? What the reasoned crowd worried about is that he would bring in old-school types to serve as his retinue - which he did (Wren), and continue to rely on his "gut" as opposed to data-driven decisions.
Sure, he kept Hazen but he didn't have to make a choice, because of Henry's willingness to pay for a large and expensive FO; and unless you know that's he listening to Hazen more than Wren (hint: you don't), you can't draw any conclusions from his, so far, inactivity.
We'll see; skepticism is the hallmark of a quick and active mind

Has anyone heard how Cliff Lees progressing with his injury and would he be a buy low guy since Farrell knows him from Cleveland? I really don't know about two injury concerns in the rotation (Buch and Lee ) but with guys like Wright and Kelly maybe in the pen and Owens/Johnson (one probably gets traded) in AAA it may be worth the risk. I think we trade for a starter to. No news per se; but there is a consensus that he is likely to retire (with a 12.5m golden watch)

Take off the rose-colored glasses. "to being arguably the best defensive SS last season"
Yeah, like it's arguable that the earth is flat or the moon is made of green cheese

The harder I look at this team, the more I think it is in deep trouble. 2/3 OF positions, 2 corner IFs, C are all large question marks; and the pitching . . . And the defense is pretty shaky (except for probably the OF) - Fangraphs just did their AL "Gold Gloves" (just an average of the 3 defensive metrics) and the only Red Sox to finish top 3 at any position was . . . Wade Miley. Pedroia is in permanent decline, I fear, and Xander likely just had his peak defensive season; the team was 14th in DE in the AL last year.

So what's the concensus at the moment about whether or not you'd sacrifice a draft pick for Gordon? Depends on the market for Castillo/Betts. Doesn't really make sense unless you are turning one of those two over. If we could get someone to take 100% of Castillo's contract and give us something else back, or JBJ gets valued the way most of us here value him, I'd be open to it. The market for Betts is just about any player in MLB. For Castillo? Nada They should never appear on either sides of a slash

I think Dombrowski was a bit more circumspect than some of the posts/tweets indicate; when prompted, he said that Betts and Bogaerts are players that you would "think are the backbone for years to come" and that he'd be very surprised if they're not strong parts of the lineup *next* year, so pretty banal.
And this is obvious (although the usual suspects here would disagree), but he clearly distinguished Betts from Rusney and Jackie when discussing the OF. He said they're the starting OF going into the season (exact positions not addressed)
And he also characterized Jackie as one of the best defensive OF he's ever seen
Barnes is a reliever.
Shaw is an option for some OF play.
Of course, you should listen to it yourselves and draw your own conclusions.
