lowkey hoping he chooses to opt out I second that not a clutch hitter he has his moments, but not worth the 30 million he will command. The $30 million he will command? He’s signed for $20 million... Also love the claim that he’s not a clutch hitter. What is that even supposed to mean? I’m willing to bet there’s plenty of stats out there that prove that to be completely false.

If it is Red Sox vs Braves in the WS then the Sox have home field. It goes to whoever has the best record of the two teams. That is incorrect, its based on seed not record. I don’t think it matters though we’d beat the braves regardless. No, that is not correct. Seed only matters in the DS and CS of each league. The WS was determined by the ASG up until 2017; seed didn’t matter all those years as well. Since then it is based on the team with the best record.

So I have a question, we have a better record than ATL, but they won their division. So who has Home field advantage in the World Series? Just asking for a friend who is buying tickets. If it is Red Sox vs Braves in the WS then the Sox have home field. It goes to whoever has the best record of the two teams.

Game gets pushed back to Wednesday for a 3 way tie. If it’s just a 2 way tie then the tier breaker is Monday with the Wild Card game still happening on Tuesday. What's the tie breaker if 3 teams go 1-1 ? Not possible for all teams to go 1-1 in the extra tie breaker games. If 3 teams end up tied for one spot, those three teams are designated team A, B, or C. The team with the best head to head winning percentage among those 3 teams gets to pick first, second best second and third last. Team A plays Team B first. Winner of that game plays Team C. The winner of that game goes on to play the other Wild Card winner that wasn’t part of the tie. If the Red Sox are in this situation, they would have the best percentage (it seems they have the best percentage in every single combination of ties, so would always pick first). Their choice would basically be picking to be team A and having to win 2 games in a row, but both of them being at home, or choosing to be Team C and only having to win 1 game, but it would take place on the road.

The AL Wild Card game is Tuesday, not Wednesday. So how would a three team tie for WC2 be resolved in time for a Tuesday WC game? Game gets pushed back to Wednesday for a 3 way tie. If it’s just a 2 way tie then the tier breaker is Monday with the Wild Card game still happening on Tuesday.

I thought so, thought I saw something earlier today that said they just needed to win 1 out of the last 2. Also didn't know how all the tie breakers would work! They need to win 1 out of 2 to at least force a game 163. So winning tonight means they at least guarantee forcing a game 163 and also gives them a chance of the number 1 wild card spot after tomorrow. Winning tonight and tomorrow guarantees that top spot (since they have the tie breaker on the Yankees).

Hey! Varitek won the the Little League World Series as a SS and the World Series as a C! Actually Varitek was on the losing team and he made the final out. He played SS that day and made an error. I remember this from Game 4 of the 2004 World Series when FOX broadcast his little league story during the game. Actually, you are both technically correct. His team did win, though only in the American bracket. I believe winning the American and International brackets still technically counts as winning the LLWS. Those winners play after that though, which is where his team lost.

Inclined to agree except for the fact that vaccination does not preclude one from getting Covid, it does however lessen the symptoms or the likelihood of hospitalization. Me, personally, I want everyone to act responsibly and get the damn vaccine. it's 2 days, 30 minutes of your life if you get the Pfizer or Moderna. If you're a dude, the chances you even have side effects are minor compared to women (something to do with women's hormonal response to the vaccine, and I'm not saying this from a sexist place). This is yet another example of we can't have nice things because 40 percent of our population eats paint chips. But I do agree, there should be a consequence for refusing science and choosing ignorance, but that is a dangerous road to walk down in any supposedly free society. Best we can hope for right about now is natural selection. Who knows, maybe another 4-7 years of this and the commensurate IQ of surviving Americans might finally trend positively.. THE VACCINES ARE NOT FDA APPROVED!! YOU ARE A LAB RAT! Can the moderates please moderate us back to baseball The irony of making a comment like that and then complaining about the moderators not stopping those types of comments/conversations is amazing. You aren’t helping the matter at all. How about people just stop making comments about the matter, and stick to baseball? That would be nice...

I was going to post something in the other thread weeks ago that I would love Mayer to fall to use, not only because of his talent, but that my last name is also Mayer. However, I decided against it since I didn’t think there was any chance he fell to us. Guess I’m getting a jersey with my name on it at some point on the future ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

(Note that those are totals, not rates.)
They tell more of the story, certainly.
When a guy makes a change that extreme, it's very unlikely to be random. Think Jose Bautista and J.D. Martinez at the plate.
There's one more data point here. Chaim Bloom, who knows vastly more about Plawecki than you or I can possibly know, went out and got him.
The Indians have a tremendous track record for taking projected #4 starters and turning them into legit aces (Kluber, Beiber, Clevinger). But it doesn't necessarily follow that they were fully aware of Plawecki's transformation as a pitch-framer.
Bloom, OTOH, has before and after video to look at, and that's just the starting point.
A data point for the data point: he went out and got Kevin Pillar, and in that case, I was able to get a pretty good idea why. Pillar's hitting numbers before the middle of last season (which I myself was taking as important) turn out to be completely meaningless.
Here's a thought I had a few days ago that is worth putting in bold.
The Tampa Bay Rays were among the most analytically savvy teams in MLB and had an extraordinary track record for acquiring undervalued talent. But they did this with zero ability to outbid other teams that had made the same discoveries they had. The Red Sox are now essentially the Rays, with that ability. And in fact, you can bet that the Rays were in on Martin Perez and Kevin Pillar, and we outbid them. And probably ditto for some or all of Peraza, Plawecki, and Puello ... and that's just the letter P!
(Try saying "Perez, Pillar, Peraza, Plawecki" ten times fast. Or even twice!)
I didn't include them, mainly because I knew you would say exactly this, yet he was like #20 and #10 the two years prior. So he didn't breakout, he was very good, then horrible for two years than bounced back last year. Which is saying something, either for the player or the stats in general. Bloom brought him in to be a backup catcher, which seems fine. Yet this he's a starting level catcher crap seems way overblown. If he was other teams would have paid him, the Indians a very smart team just let him go. I'll agree if everything goes just right, he could be a top backup. I certainly wouldn't project him to be one though. There is a lot of up and down in his numbers and as catchers get older with all the extra wear and tear they take they call fall off a cliff at any time. I hope Bloom can bring some of the Tampa magic with him, but can we please stop acting like he was behind it? I mean Tampa hasn't missed a beat and has been great without him. Making great move after great move. While Bloom outside of the Betts trade has basically done nothing besides improve the margins. I hope you are right, but I won't trust Bloom until he proves himself, not just because he came from Tampa. Ben was a super bright young GM that learned from a great GM in Theo and just wasn't ready. I get wanting to trust him, but it's way too early for that. Only two GMs I fully trust Danny and Bill and they earned that over decades of brilliance! If it's too early to judge Bloom until we see what the results of this off season are (if we ever do!), isn't it too early as well to claim that Tampa "hasn't missed a beat and has been great without him"? I'm sure that will end up being the case as well, but none of their moves have results yet either.

I don't have your crystal ball when it come to when Downs is "supposed" to be ready. All I can tell you is that he is in no way ready to contribute now. I hope your projection is correct, but I will reserve judgement on that projection until next year. I remain thoroughly unimpressed regarding Downs at present. It’s not a crystal ball, it’s what this site and others have as his estimated arrival to the majors. The point is, he doesn’t need to be ready right now. And judging that on one game and/or a handout of spring training games is ridiculous. You can take a handful of games from any player to ever play and probably be able to say the exact same thing (even setting aside the fact that it’s still just spring training). If he’s doing the same thing over and over again into the actual minor league season and beyond then that’s absolutely a valid point, but right now it’s utterly meaningless to who he is as a prospect and what can be expected from him going forward. While that is obviously not the same thing as having an initial impression based on what you have seen so far, I would not be surprised if that impression changed going forward.

Sorry to hear about your addiction, can't help you. When th ball clangs off the heal of your glove and another slips out of the webbing and you don't bend at the knees to field these soft toss ground balls between innings you are not ready for prime time. Downs is not ready by any stretch right now. Uhhh am I missing something here? He’s not supposed to be ready right now by any stretch of imagination. His ETA is really until late 2021 to begin with I believe...

He gets more of a pass because 1) he's a pitcher - he wasn't cheating. It's not like it knocked a run off of his ERA. 2) he spoke up about it - maybe not when you expected him to, but if you have really read what I have posted, I don't think it's hard to understand the dynamics of why. Yes, it would have been "braver" for him to do it when he was with the Astros, but my God, can you imagine all of the crap that would have hit during the playing season and the clubhouse wars, media circus, and distractions there would have been, etc? What you're complaining about isn't even realistic. The other reason for the pass is because he is the one guy who actually stood up and said something that was being done wrong, which is more than can be said for his ex-teammates. I just think me and you have different opinions on Fiers. He only did it for his new team and his gain. Every ex-Astros player has come out and apologized, who went on to be with other teams. I think there's legal issues to why current Astros players can't admit to the cheating. Jim Crane, the owner, is currently dealing with lawsuits from at least 2 or 3 ex MLB players who said that the Astros cheating ruined their careers. I think that might be the reasons why they haven't owned up to it. There could be even more lawsuits if they come out openly admitting to it. I'm more upset about people losing jobs because of the player's cheating and the Astros player's saying nothing about it. I really do not understand being mostly upset about the fact that people lost their jobs. Do you seriously believe that those who were fired had absolutely no idea that this was taking place? That is beyond a stretch. The players aren’t the bosses of the team. Even if they didn’t know what was happening (again, pretty much impossible) it is there responsibility to recognize when things like this are taking place. On the other hand if they were aware at all, they are just as bad for not stopping it in the first place and absolutely deserve to be fired. That is what happens when you are in a manager/supervisor/position that oversees others employees. Managing those you oversee is an incredibly important part of the job and they failed to do that.

They can be announced whenever. Why, did the rule change? If the Sox extended with Devers today and made it official today, it would count on this year's totals, wouldn't it? I believe they changed in the past year or two. The hit to the luxury tax now takes place the year the new contract starts and doesn’t factor in years already under contract.

They’re saying its still Graterol. Crap. Who is they? Everything I have seen says that he is still involved, but going to the Dodgers most likely. Then the Dodgers trade other prospects to the Sox. Edit: I believe that is what the Star Tribune information is referencing as well.

Except he does throw a change up. It’s just not considered a relatively good one. The guy is 21 years old. How do you know that the Red Sox didn’t see something in that change up that they could work with, or felt like it would get better with more refinement. Again, he’s 21 years old. That’s the point everyone is making. It’s one thing for the Sox to disagree with the Twins about his future if they see something different with how his pitches may develop. It’s another thing entirely to view the medicals and see that something may not be exactly what they expected. That is, of course, equally speculative. But I’ll say this: changeups are hard pitches, harder than sliders and cutters. When you throw 100 and have a good slider, maybe you get away with a show-me change. But the point is, again, as is he looks like a reliever, so he’d have to be a different guy to have a starter’s repertoire. The point is though that the Red Sox clearly see him (before the medicals) as a starter. You may not, but it really doesn’t matter what we think. If that’s how they view him then it makes sense for them to want him and the value they placed on him. Whether that is right or wrong, none of us will know for a long time. Given the lack of development for starters in the system I wouldn’t be too confident, but crazier things have happened.

Also, I don’t particularly remember seeing anything that said the Twins specifically view his as a reliever. Does anyone have a link to anything like that? From what I have seen, they put him in the bullpen to pitch in the playoffs when they get they could use him. There is a big difference between that and viewing him only as a reliever for the rest of his career. It’s not like he is a 26 year old who has been in the majors for a few years now.

In Rosenthal’s defense, he is making a fair point: the Twins saw him as a reliever fir reasons that likely had nothing to do with health and everything to do with the lack of an off-speed pitch. His stuff cries out closer, looks like a guy a long way from starting. Actually reminds me of Ruby a bit. Except he does throw a change up. It’s just not considered a relatively good one. The guy is 21 years old. How do you know that the Red Sox didn’t see something in that change up that they could work with, or felt like it would get better with more refinement. that is because the Yankees could dip into their farm system and bring up players that are more than ready to take over. remember the big selloff by the Yankeees to build up their farm system including the trade of chapman for Torres and getting him back in free agency and the trades for Clevelands and several other teams high end prospects. they are now being utilized as the replacements for the lost starters. Yeap. Simply put, the Yankees have had WAY better starting pitching depth to begin with. I'm getting mocked on here (once again), but the Yankees 6th starter in German is literally pitching like a Cy Young candidate right now. Smith isn't even their 6th starter depth wise so I don't really understand what you are trying to say here...You called him there 8th starter, which is probably realistic, give or take a space or two. What teams actually have great MLB quality starting depth that far down the depth chart? Those that do are usually teams that have top pitching prospects that can come up and help out the team.

Meh, they have yet to get rolling. The losses to Baltimore are more than pathetic, but they’re still playing much better than three weeks ago. Shoulda swept Chicago, but still came out 3-1. This series is recoverable. So’s the season. FWIW, idk how in the hell NY is winning with that MASH squad. It’s ridiculous. Kinda makes Sox losses like this a LOT more embarrassing. Let’s hope Shawaryn gets the call for Price’s next turn and shows something. that is because the Yankees could dip into their farm system and bring up players that are more than ready to take over. remember the big selloff by the Yankeees to build up their farm system including the trade of chapman for Torres and getting him back in free agency and the trades for Clevelands and several other teams high end prospects. they are now being utilized as the replacements for the lost starters. While this is true in a sense, it isn't really valid when you are talking about the amount on injuries that they have had. It's not like they had 10-15 top ranked prospects breaking the door down. Some of the replacements have been notable prospects, but there are others that that this is not the case for. Plus, even if it was the case that they had 10-15 top ranked prospects ready to contribute, no one would expect prospects to succeed as much as they have so far.

Do you watch the episode live on HBO or live through the HBO Go app? I watched on HBO live and the quality was horrible! It looked very grainy and sort of like there was holes in the picture (I assume that was mostly from bad quality of the snow, sort of like what umass said). Re-watched it the next day on HBO Go and it was a completely different episode. Yes, it will still dark, but I was able to see everything that was happening easily. Unfortunately didn't learn this until last week, but HBO releases the new episode on HBO Go at the same exact time as it airs on the channel. However, because television releases like that do not support the greatest quality, it's best to view it on on HBO Go. The quality is SO much better overall. I watched this past episode like this and found myself switching back and forth to see the difference. It's very noticeable. I use HBO Now. But I've still seen about 10 different sources and none of them were anywhere near good enough. I even watched a brightened up version and that was awful as well. They need to completely remaster that episode for the blu-rays because it really was awful quality for the actual source that was released to every platform.
It's unfathomable that the people in charge of producing this show didn't take the episode and watch it on an average viewer's tv set in a typical environment to see how it would look. They have had 2 years to do this and it still looks rushed as hell. Don't know what you are using to view it, but I don't have anything too special and it looked great watching it again. Again, this was on HBO Go (which you automatically receive with an HBO subscription) and it was beautiful on there. Those that viewed it live though HBO Go that I have talked to said it was beautiful then as well. Agreed though that they should have looked into that a bit more. It shouldn't look horrible like it did while airing live. Honestly looked like I was watching it on a tube televisions.
