Shields is undoubtedly a really bad fit for Fenway. But even so, there's a decent chance he's at least Wade Miley-ish, right? And if that's the case, I think I'd swap Sandoval's contract for Shields', though I haven't thought about it too deeply. The Fenway numbers (small sample) have not been kind, nor does the fly ball nature bode particularly well. If you look at Shields' year last year, it was LHB's that really really hurt him. *maybe* left field at fenway would minimize some slugging there in terms of homers allowed, but then again there's a lot of room for doubles to drop in as well. AL east has quite a few hitters parks so he's a bit scary. Kinda wonder if Shields would be mostly a lateral move and would just end up tying their hands from upgrading a starter spot with a better option.

Since there is absolutely no way to predict who needs TJS, there is an equal chance that both I and Carson Smith will need it. This might be the dumbest thing I've read in this thread. Is this sarcasm? (I hope)

I would have rather them have kept Margot and Guerra in anticipation of possible future trades of Bradley Jr. And Bogaerts. Yikes.

Not that it's any surprise, but Devers did confirm to media today that Red Sox have told him he's ticketed for Salem.

So Cleveland is shopping for an outfielder? How can we make a Rusney for Salazar happen? I know, I'm just dreaming. That would be awesome though. I would throw in some pretty sizeable prospects to make that happen. Rusney, Owens, Travis... ship em out!

Anyone worried that Vazquez's arm is apparently not even close to average right now, let alone otherworldly? I haven't read anything to that effect-- if this is something that's been reported, do you mind posting the article or tweet? Speier tweeted this earlier: "Vazquez has 2 throws to 2N in minor lg game - elevated w/ diminished zip on SB, then accurate, off-balance on attempted advance on OF throw" Depends on how someone reads into "diminished zip" I guess

So, they've lost their #2 starter and their setup man for what looks like the first 5 weeks of the season. Man, John Farrell has to be sweating buckets right now, especially with Kluber, Carrasco, Salazar to start off the season. And then the Blue Jays 7 games out of the next 10 after that series.

Not that it may mean a whole lot, but I saw that Brandon Workman & Jacob Dahlstrand will also be rehabbing in XST @ Fenway South.....They are both fellow Texans, as well as being pitchers & have been in the game for a while, so they may have some impact on the young Kopech. Especially Workman, who has been to the top of the mountain. Not sure how it works, but maybe they will have workouts together, meals together, ect. "Kopech beats up Brandon Workman in cafeteria brawl"

Chris Sale is like a younger, healthier, and more consistent Rich Hill (2015), on a more favorable contract. That's it. Close the thread.

You guys and your rationalizations lol. The above average speed to first followed up by the explanation of why he actually doesn't have it is just perfect In the 40-yard dash, he'd grade out at plus, maybe better. When you combine that with being slow out of the box, you get above-average. Lol, and I'm gonna go with everything that we've seen so far, that's decidedly not above-average. But keeping playing around with the equation until you get the predetermined number you were dead set on landing on from the get go.

Castillo should be a plus BABIP hitter-- lots of line drives and ground balls, along with at least above-average speed to first (though he's slow out of the box). .270/.310/.400 isn't sexy, but it makes him at least a good fourth outfielder and a passable starter (in the 1.5 win range). You guys and your rationalizations lol. The above average speed to first followed up by the explanation of why he actually doesn't have it is just perfect

The thing that found most interesting is that Ken Williams drafted his son in the 4th round a few years back , 46 rounds too soon, now he is in the middle of this controversy. He also traded him away, no?

I don't care about ST stats or results, but I have to say that my opinion on Castillo has only been reaffirmed this spring. He's a replacement level player in my eyes. He'll be a below average hitter because he simply can't get the ball off of the ground, he's always injured in some fashion, and he makes mental mistakes fairly often. I personally doubt his glove in LF will justify keeping him in the lineup. The good news is we have depth. Holt and Young obviously could handle an OF corner, and if Shaw can play LF that would be great too. Also, this gives me one more reason to root for Benintendi or Moncada to start the way they ended last year (as if I needed one). The Marlins also should have sold high on Yelich after 2014 or if he bounces back this year, but won't. His GB problems are similar to Castillo's. He's a lot younger, so he definitely has a better chance of figuring himself out at the plate, but his value was so high after his 2014 BABIP explosion that it was riskier to keep him than trade him. Again, just my opinion on these guys. Don't forget his "plus speed" hasn't shown the ability to play in a game whatsoever so far.

Also E-Rod's injury has not healed. The video of him throwing off a mound the other day had him hardly using his leg lol.

A little weird disjointed writing here, but actually reading the entire article helps clear it up. It sounds like the general consensus among scouts and industry people is summed up by this: “They can’t be comfortable with any arm behind [David] Price,” said the second scout. “They don’t have the luxury of waiting on ‘what if’ with [Joe] Kelly, [Rick] Porcello, and [Clay Buchholz]. Not after last year.” And that that is probably what is leading some to think about a Gray/big time SP trade. I don't think Boston Media is jumping to Gray because Elias or Wright gets a start or two, it's because Buch, Porcello look meh and E-Rod is still only using his leg gingerly. There's no implication of that at all. It's just two scouts. And they obviously were not advance scouts who saw Porcello and Kelly both before and after their DL stints, because if they were, they'd be saying the precise opposite about Porcello and the same, though guarded, about Kelly. 1) Two years ago Porcello threw his sinker as his #1 pitch and was a solid #2 starter. Last year, when he threw his sinker as his #1 pitch, he was a borderline ace. And they're uncomfortable with him? 2) E-Rod is going to miss just the first month, and with a minor non-arm injury that has already healed. And suddenly this guy, who was a borderline #2 / #3 with just three pitches and has added a sinker and cutter and is working on a curve, is not in the equation? 3) Buchholz and Kelly remain injury and performance question marks, respectively, although there's cause for optimism about both. But given that Wright has pitched like a #4 and maybe like a #3, and Elias has pitched like a #4, and Owens and Johnson will continue their development, they certainly have the luxury of waiting on Buchholz and Kelly. There are few teams in MLB with that kind of rotation depth. If, as the deadline approaches, if Buchholz is hurt and none of Kelly, Wright, Elias, Owens, or Johnson is pitching well enough to make you comfortable with him starting a playoff game 4, they'll trade for a starter. And if the second best guy from that group is only pitching like a typical #5, you could see them making a trade as well. You should be Ricky P's agent me thinks. After that spiel I want to sign him to a bigger extension!

Scott Lauber @scottlauber 3m3 minutes ago Andrew Benintendi strokes a single the other way to left field in his first big-league spring-training at-bat. #RedSox I hope hitting the ball to the opposite field is something he works on this year. A lefty with only pull power only works in Fenway if you're Ted Williams. *cough* Ortiz *cough*
