great start. eduardo's been carrying the innings load for this rotation lately; imagine that Yeah, he's on one of those stretches where you dream on him being that top of the rotation starter the last month or so. Hopefully he can keep it up and stay healthy.

Great win, but Eovaldi's performance is troubling. What if he isn't the answer in the bullpen? This is probably why the Sox are scouting Ken Giles and Kirby Yates. Who can trust Eovaldi right now after one set back and a limited rehab stint? Might be a lost year for him.

Arenado took a team friendly deal to stay in Colorado, Mookie has shown no indication to do just this. In fact, he turned down 2 team friendly extensions in the past. Mookie is AT LEAST looking at better than Harper and Machado money when he makes it to free agency. Mookie is a better player than both of those guys and deserves more than them. Arenado didn't make it to free agency. Whether those were team friendly extensions or not remains to be seen, that's kind of my point. Harper and, to a lesser extent, Machado are just the two latest giant neon-flashing warning signs not to spend to that level on a single player. There will likely be a tremendously small market for Mookie's services regardless of how good he is the next year plus. Also, if the Red Sox sign Devers or a couple of other players to contracts after this season then the Red Sox may not even be in the market for Mookie at his desired price range in 2020. By the way, I couldn't find the number. Do recall the figure Betts was offered this offseason? He was already offered 200 million for 8 years by the Sox in their latest extension offer. Mookie comfirmed the report. Teams will be incredibly smart after overpaying for Machado and Harper? Nope unlikely. This shows the opposite. This shows that teams are wiling to pay top dollar for elite free agents while letting the likes of Kimbrel and Khechul rot in free agency.

Yandy Diaz has kinda owned Price and Sale (in a SSS). that foul ball might keep him out for a few days. Sounds like it's looking like a IL stint more likely, might be a long IL stint too.

With his mix of offense and defense he’s in that Arenado range of 8 and $260 mil no matter where he signs. Now they used a position player to pitch because they're out of options.... They had plenty of options including the pitcher who was warming up (Castillo) That was probably in case the position player threw too many pitches. Still, in a game where you just got back 3 runs in the 8th, you throw a position player in there like that says a lot. This is a important game for Tampa too, right with Boston.

That's all well and good, but his resolute determination to go to free agency is probably counterproductive to him staying with the Red Sox and also getting the most money, so there's a chance he loses on both fronts. He's going to win on the money front because I don't see a better player in free agency the next 3 years. Mookie Betts is now the cream of the crop that everyone is saving their money for. Mike Trout is a Angel for life now. The Sox will lose if they don't extend themselves for Mookie Betts, which you can REALLY question at this point for reasons I don't need to hash again.

They didn't use an opener tonight. Tampa's bullpen is pretty worn down right now, the Tampa broadcast has been saying all game. Part of this problem is because they use a opener a lot and often. Jerry is right about this one. Now they used a position player to pitch because they're out of options....

Good game to get the rust off Nate...just don't let it go too far. He was getting in this game no matter what. So yeah, good thing the Sox have a huge lead.

That's nice. Their arms will be burnt by September. No one in their bullpen has a particularly high innings total for the year. Who are they burning out? Ryan Yarbrough is a great example of a guy who's seeing a lot of appearances and innings on top of it.

The Rays have the second lowest team ERA in baseball. Clearly they have no idea what they're doing. That's nice. Their arms will be spent by September.

So... maybe a dumb question, but is there a rule about hiring family members? I mean: what if the Sox could, say, sign Mookie to a very team-friendly deal but then hire is wife in the FO for crazy money? His household gets the same income, but the Sox don’t have it count against the ceiling. Explicitly against the rules? It wouldn't happen, nor should the Sox employ a unqualified fiance of Mookie Betts.

Jon Paul Morosi of MLB.com reports that the Red Sox are among the teams to evaluate Daniel Hudson. Hudson has posted a 0.93 ERA over his last 16 relief appearances to pique the interest of contending clubs. The cost to acquire the 32-year-old surely wouldn't be too much. Signed a 1.5 million dollar contract in the off-season. Owed less than a million dollars the rest of the season. This is probably the only other guy the Sox can afford outside of Edwin Diaz. Of course none of this will matter if Porcello keeps pitching like a AAA pitcher this year. He's probably one of the biggest reasons why the Sox can't consistently win this year.

At least we didn't give up much for this guy. Isn't there a seldom used rule that allows recission of a trade within 30 days? Only if you can prove that he is injured and that if the Orioles hid the injury before the trade happened. Kind of the Pomeranz trade revisited.

That's gotta be a legit screwball. Haven't seen one since Fernando Valenzuela. Jim Mecir had a good one. He's the last guy to regularly throw one in the majors. Most traditional screwballs are thrown slower than 80 mph. That pitch by Oliver Drake was clocked at 84 mph. It's unlike anything we have ever seen a pitcher ever pitch in the majors. First pitch of it's kind. Guy is a journeyman and then he comes up with that pitch at the age of 31.
