You can imagine how players would act towards a beat writer if they reported it every time one of them yelled at somebody. Doesn't mean it's not something fans would like to know about.

Don't be fooled by Tomase. This is how beat writers react when someone outside the clubhouse reports something. "That's beneath us. Non-story."
I don't doubt that it happens more than we realize, and I wouldn't expect it to be reported normally, but come on. It's spring training and Sandoval's already *that* on edge that he's flipping out on a guy over a completely innocuous story? What's gonna happen when he's hitting .210 in May and he's being painted as Satan himself by every talk radio idiot/columnist in town?

Yeah. There's a reason he's the first GM you've ever heard of to end up a first base coach.

Yeah. Harder to believe now that the oxilofrine thing was really an honest mistake.

If they're actually attempting to make a conscious shift away from analytics, or "the numbers," as they were ominously referred to as, how is that even going to take place? Are they gonna scrap any statistic that is more "advanced" than the AVG/HR/RBI line and fielding percentage? Would they wipe the memories of their employees and get them to only subscribe to traditional scouting? I dunno. But they now have a guy running their team who uses RBI when describing what kind of offensive player a guy is, which I heard with my own ears by Dombrowski the other day re: Pablo Sandoval. It seems to me that there is literally nothing that would convince some people that this team is not going to be using information in the most progressive way possible. They can hire Dave Dombrowski, the owner can come out and say it blatantly, and still we get people here saying, "What's the big deal? They're not really gonna do it." BTW, if you say they "lucked" into a World Series in 2013, or it was a fluke, you're a moron. I'm sorry, you just are. You are no better than the average idiot that calls into WEEI.

I think 73 is conservative, but criticizing someone for not giving serious weight to the notion that Neo has a "non-zero chance of being in the discussion as the best ever at his position" is flat out silly.

Yeah I shouldn't say it's weird, I take that back. It's actually wholly predictable and transparent, particularly on the media's part.

I have never been and never will be a big Sandoval fan, but when has he ever not been fat? He was fat when he was good, and he's fat now. It's so weird to see people pretend that this isn't all just angst about his horrible performance last year.

What the hell? That would be very odd in my opinion. To clarify, never seen him live and in person. This is still surprising, no? For a top 10 pick?

FYI, "I think he's going to be good" is not evidence that Keith Law "missed" on that player.
You've given literally one example of a guy with a proven MLB track record, Reddick, and he was arguably not even a "low upside" prospect.

Fair enough. It was a common argument but you weren't really making it specifically.

He also held onto the top 4 despite everyone trying to pry them away. Not to get too off topic, but I hate this argument. It's like saying, "The Angels acquired Andrelton Simmons, and they didn't even have to give up Mike Trout! Automatically a good trade!" None of the big four would even be a consideration for anyone we traded for this offseason.

Very surprised by this take. Law himself will admit and has admitted that he will miss on these types of prospects. Please provide an exact quote. Because frankly I think you're probably misrepresenting what he said. And that doesn't change the fact that neither of your examples have even played a full season in MLB. Having a good 55 games (all based on catcher defensive WAR) does not mean Vazquez should've been a highly ranked prospect.

So you claim Law misses on a certain kind of player "all the time" and you name two examples, high of whom have done virtually nothing in their major league career. I'm pretty sure Klaw never said, "Workman will never have a half a season of being a decent middle reliever."

Screw it, let's shoot for 4 in the top 5 next year. I know this is not how it works but if you simply remove all the guys with 2016 ETAs this might not actually be that far off.

I dont get how BA can have us 4th and Klaw can have us 10th... Thats a very large discrepancy It's really not, though.

If a draft is instituted then the teams that are on probation will just have a pick or multiple picks taken away from them. MLB is not just gonna forget that the Red Sox and Yankees penalties are supposed to run through 2017.
Still worth it, so it was a smart move, as you say.
