Interesting, I thought it was 8:59ET. but that makes sense.
If I had the choice, I'd protect Wright, Webster, Fields, and Wilson, and get rid of guys like Beato and Valencia.
As much as I want to protect Vazquez, it doesn't really add up to me. If they thrown him on the 40 man roster, he's only 21 and probably starting 2013 in AA, so by the time he's MLB ready (bat and glove), he would have burned 2 option years, and even at that, he's not a huge impact guy who will 100% stick with Boston from the day he gets called up. Would a team really add him, and keep him on the MLB roster for the full year? I understand why people want to add him to be cautious, but I just don't see it.
Regardless, Jon Heyman was reporting that Boston is interested in Stephen Drew (unfortunately), and he may also go to Detroit. If Detroit thinks they'll sign him, then they will reportedly look to trade Peralta to Arizona or Boston. If that trade happens in the next couple hours, I could definetly see guys like Hazelbaker, Wilson, or other 40 man options added in.

Sean McAdam @sean_McAdam Later tonight, Red Sox will drop five players from their 40-man and add six. They're currently at 39. #RedSoxTalk

Sox to add Webster, Steven Wright, Wilson, Vazquez, Butler, and Hassan
No word on who's been removed from 40

Surprised to see two catchers added, and obviously surprised to see Hasaan added, but that can only be a good thing. Maybe speaks volume on the improvements he's made so far this offseason? I don't know but obviously the front office values him more than we do.

I'm surprised they added Hassan, but everyone else seems reasonable to me. We'll see who get DFAed. Remember, there are a lot of players floating on the waiver wire these few days, and it's as good a time as any to try and sneak someone through.

DFAs are Ivan De Jesus, Danny Valencia, David Carpenter, Sandy Rosario, and Zach Stewart. Only De Jesus is a surprise, I think.

Thrilled that they were able to cleanse the bottom part of the 40 man without really losing anything with potential. Able to save Britton and Pimentel while adding 6 guys is fantastic

Adding 2 catchers makes some sense during the Great Catching Shortage of 2012-2013. Clear signal to me that Salty really is gone.
I'd like to see what De Jesus can do, but he's out of options and I guess they figured Ciriaco earned a roster spot.
Hassan's been a sleeper for a looong time.

The Hassan addition confuses me. I don't get it. Even if they like him, I couldn't see him getting selected in Rule 5 and sticking with another team all year, which is the point of adding a guy.
I also wonder if Wright would have been selected/stuck.

Hassan has not impressed me much at all. I have season tickets to the Pawsox and remember one Brewers scout commenting that Hassan could be turned into a pitcher(which he was at Duke and on the Cape Cod League in 2009.)
It should be noted that Hassan's defense improved a ton.

It's fun to think that Hassan's stats are not much worse than those of Youk, and that he, Vasquez and Butler are all obp guys. But with all our holes, some of these people are going to have to be passed through waivers later anyway. New acquisitions will have to be added, and only some of them will be acquired through trades of guys on the 40-man like Salty or an RP.

I imagine Hassan is the first guy designated for assignment when the Red Sox inevitably need the 40 man roster space.

Fields is probably the most likely to be lost during the Rule 5 draft correct?

I don't feel comfortable mentioning Hassan in the same sentence as .... the Greek God of Walks. Not close.
Hassan has been a productive hitter at every level. He dropped off a bit at AAA but let's say the Sox think that's temporary. In that case, he's at minimum quality AAA corner outfield depth this season and for the following two years. Let's infer that they don't want to add Bradley or Brentz early. In other words, Hassan is expected to be useful in this roster spot and was, we assume, likely to be added to the roster some time during the season anyway. And he has some upside.
We are at the verge of having too many OF on the roster, or may be when the Sox add at least 1 free agent - Ben said he was looking to add 1 or 2. If the outfield is: Sands/Nava, Ellsbury, FA RF, Sweeney, with Kalish and Hassan in AAA, that's only 6 1/2, which is a fine number.

My take is the Red Sox view Hassan as profiling better in a backup role, and essentially has developed to the point where he's the player he's going to be, while Hazelbaker still has growing to do. Therefore, they'd feel more comfortable bringing up Hassan to deal with a short/medium term injury and playing him only once or twice a week, while it would be counterproductive to do the same with Hazelbaker.
There's a chance Hazelbaker gets grabbed in the Rule 5, but I'm just not confident he sticks yet.

Can we confidently say Hazelbaker is a better prospect than Hassan? Hassan is 8 months younger and played at a more advanced level, while Hazelbaker didn't really better his performance in a 2nd year at AA.

Hassan is 8 months younger and played at a more advanced level, while Hazelbaker didn't really better his performance in a 2nd year at AA. I think Hazelbaker is. Neither are more than up-and-down/last man on the bench types, but Hazelbaker offers more when it comes to carving out a bit of a major league career. He has speed, is left-handed, and can play all three outfield spots in a pinch. Hazelbaker is below-average in center though. Seems best suited for a National League team that could use his flexibility on the bench in stretches and be able to send him up/down. Hassan's very limited outside of that he's good at taking pitches. The bat isn't there against quality pitching and he's a below-average hitter overall. Hassan fits as a guy the Red Sox can bring up to fill a bench spot for a bit, play a little, and then send back down. Repeat as necessary during the season. Adding someone to the 40-Man isn't always adding the best player. It can be adding the best player to handle the role it will entail.

Is there an advantage to not protecting a guy and having him returned to you at the end of spring training versus adding a guy to the 40 and waiving him at some point after the Rule 5 draft, either in the offseason or during the season?
Ignoring the risk of a guy sticking on another club for a moment. For instance Hassan or Hazelbaker would both be candidates to be waived after the Sox sign someone else. If you protect a guy then waive him is there a greater likelihood you'd lose him than it'd be should they get selected in the RuleV?
May be why Hazelbaker, Fields (not sure why i brain farted and typed Rice) and Pressly were not protected.

Rice? Jason Rice hasn't been in the organization for a couple years

Fields has been awful in the Dominican Winter League - that may have had something to do with his being left off. Perhaps they think he might have hard time sticking the whole year in the bigs.

i wish josh fields and hazelbaker were protected, because they will probably be claimed and I think that they each have potential to make an impact in the bigs

trivial note: the 5 players DFA'd, every one of them, if clearing waivers, can be outrighted without permission to spend the year at Pawtucket. 4 of the 5 are then free agents in OCT if not added. They have Stewart for 2 more years in AAA before free agency.
Waived by 2 teams in 2 months: " the bloom is off the Rosario."
If people think Hassan gets DFA soon, very wrong. They added him for a reason and there is a greater risk to lose him on waivers than in Rule 5. All 6 of the new guys stay until at least summer and only come off if they are horrific.
Mauro Gomez has real value now. Per Sox. Maybe. Tough guess on the 2 or 3 who come off due to free agency signings. Which makes Hassan Wright Butler perplexing. Nava age 30. OPS 2nd half is 607

the DeJesus fan club here does not understand why Sox called him up on 9-1 and gave him 8 AB all month. He can play LF but the opportunity went to Podsednick, even against the bad teams in meaningless games. And we are still annoyed that Aaron Cook got so much action in September. We are also Mortensen fans and don't want him on waivers.

Just want to say I liked BOTH of your posts above. Agree strongly about DeJesus. The curse of Bobby V strikes again!
