Just incredibly bad luck. This is Matt Harvey all over again. Yankees should do the TJ now and get Tanaka back next July. If they wait 6 weeks and it doesn't go well, as it likely won't, Tanaka will be out all next year, which means he'll miss 1 1/2 yrs. of baseball. Every time I read that the orthopedics recommend "platelet rich plasma therapy" in lieu of surgery for a UCL injury, as is the case with Tanaka, I know it's going to end up in surgery.

Interesting piece by Danny Knobbler who talked to Harvey regarding the Tanaka injury. Even though he tried the rehab approach, Harvey said the partial tear was always in his mind. "I didn't want to wake up every morning thinking is today the day [the ligament would completely tear]." espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/91190/matt-harvey-talks-tanaka-ucl-tears?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitterNo doubt Tanaka is in a state of shock right now. Most athletes his age - hell, most 25 year olds - think they are invincible. Once he gets past that, if there is even a scent of the "is today the day it will fully tear?" thought in his head, he needs to have the surgery. Of course, the longer he delays, the better it is for the AL East.

Not something you hear every day, but not surprising either. Tanaka publicly apologized for his injury. The team pitched him really hard for someone who had never been on a 5 day cycle, and who already had 1000+ innings under his belt. Maybe Girardi should apologize to him. Even if it is the Yanks, I hate to see the talent on the shelf.

Girardi didn't abuse him. After the first game he had 8 starts on 4 days rest, 8 on 5 days and one on 6. He could have moved him up a couple of times and didn't. Before our last series in NY, Girardi was asked why not Tanaka on Friday and skip Nuno all together.

Tanaka is 4th in the AL in innings pitched. He was on a pace for well over 200. My own opinion, but I would have tried to bring him on a little more slowly. The problem for NY is that they'd lost so many starters, and Tanaka was so effective that they had little inclination to do that. Now he's probably gone also. Really think he should opt for the surgery now. He might be back better than new in as little as a year. Tazawa is a case in point.

Which other pitchers have used that "platelet rich plasma therapy", in lieu of TJ and had it work out? I remember Takashi Saito did. Didn't Bartolo Colon also, which is what MLB hammered him for with PED like allegations?

Not all partial tears are created the same. I watched Tanaka's last two games (I don't get NESN in Danbury CT, so I end up watching more Yankee baseball than Red Sox) and it wasn't like he was pitching terrible. I am in agreement that it seems like he will eventually need TJ surgery, and with the way the Yankees season is going why wouldn't they opt to have him get it this year. But all we know is "Partial Tear" and the Yankees had him checked out by three of the best doctors in this field who all recommend rehab. You have to assume they know what they are talking about. Also leaves us a great opening to play captain hindsight at a later date.

I've read a couple of reports that said the splitter is hard on your elbow. An equally important question is if it changes the way he pitches when he comes back.
