Third base is definitely in need of an upgrade. I, too, am anxious to see how this 20 year old can perform at the highest level. I'm also remembering the rapid promotion of another phenom in the recent past. He couldn't handle ML pitching. While Yoan is still a potential star, his failings at a young age concern me when we talk about rushing Devers to Boston. The rapid promotion of Mookie and Benintendi didn't see the same problems. It's all about contact ability. The guys without a lot of swing and miss in their game are much more likely to quickly adjust to major league pitching from w. hat I've seen. The point I was making is that the org. Must be careful in promoting a player before he's ready. The instances you cited are not applicable as both were two years older than Devers when called up.

Agreed on the age, but Devers is raking in similar ways. Maybe Xander is a better example, who was very good at first until the following season.

Michael Chavis pushing hard for a ticket to Portland. Two more HRs yesterday upping his Ave. to .347. Something should happen with Devers after the super two condition is met in June.

The MFY has promoted Torres to AAA with Cashman saying that "He's done everything at Double-A," and that "There's no reason to hold him back." While having the same age as Devers, the latter has been putting better numbers with similar BB and K ratios so maybe a promotion is coming soon for our boy.

I have yet to see wither Chavis or Devers play.... however given the black hole at 3B I think they should both be promoted to the next level (ages notwithstanding). I also concur that contact rates are a good indictor of the proximity of adjustment to handling major league pitching.

Every time a player gets promoted it's an adjustment for him both on the field, in the Club House and personal life (like where do I live? What do I do? Who do I hang out with? Etc.)... I think we overlook that aspect of it sometimes and don't realize how stressful and mentally draining all those things are. That's why, I am torn on if promoting Devers to AAA first even makes sense... you make him go through on those adjustments, finally find a groove then move him to the majors to do it all again? Idk make its irrelevant, maybe it's not. Either way, I hope he keeps producing and is in Boston by end of June. If they feel he needs AAA at bats, which in the past they haven't required of guys, then he should be promoted to AAA within a week or so.
No matter what happens with Devers, Chavis should be on a separate time frame. I understand the calls for promoting him but this is a guy who is finally having success and only has 172 high A plate appearances. The jump he's about to make is huge. I always say try not to judge a guy's success in the minors until he shows it in AA. I would like his track record of success to be longer than it currently is to help build a foundation for him to use at the higher levels if/when he struggles to adjust.

That's all fair on Chavis, but the guy is torching Carolina league pitching. He's cut his k rate, bumped his walk rate and he's got a .360 ISO right now- he can't really prove anything more unless he is promoted, although I can see an argument for waiting for a milestone to move him. Still I do think he and devers should both be promoted as soon as chavis can actually play the field on a relatively every day basis- it can't hurt devers to get AAA at bats before being called up and he also doesn't seem to have a ton left to prove right now

You're right, every player goes through an adjustment period when assigned to another team or organization. But, isn't that what they signed up for? Athletic teams are like fraternities. Guys look out for each other. Usually, when a guy is promoted, he leaves behind an apartment that he shares with other teammates. The new guy is welcomed to share in the expenses. Often, the new arrival already is familiar with players on the team as they played with him on his previous team. Devers will or will not be promoted based upon his performance. Unless he's emotionally unstable, he should adjust to his promotion and just concentrate on baseball.

Unless he's emotionally unstable, he should adjust to his promotion and just concentrate on baseball. It doesn't matter if that's what they signed up for or not. It only matters if it affects the player negatively or not. Teams should do what's best for results not go by some "that's what they signed up for" line or thinking. I have no doubt Devers would have no issues with it; I just wonder if it's the most effective way to get the most out of him.

I imagine he's getting close to the point where no one pitches to him. That's when a player cannot learn much else at that level.

The Red Sox clearly need help at 3rd and I do not see anybody at AAA who can help. How long do they leave Devers at AA before moving him to AAA? Could he be an option for the Red Sox latter in the year if they push him to AAA in June? I hope they will push him a little as I do not want to see them trading what is left of their farm system for a third baseman they may only need for a year or two until Devers arrives. How much do really think they should push him? Realistically? I mean, he's had all of 75 PA's above A ball. So far it looks good, but go back 5 days and his numbers weren't nearly as good. I think the time to push him to AAA is now. If the Red Sox had a quality thirdbaseman at the major league level they could afford to be a little more patient. But I do not think Sandovol is it. The trading deadline is coming up in a couple of months, and I do not want the Sox to trade any more of their prospects for a thirdbaseman if they do not have to. Devers has had 200 AB's at AA and is doing well. He had a little slump but is out of it and I think was just named player of the week for his league. Let's find out of he can hit at AAA BEFORE the trading deadline so we can better assess whether he could handle the jump to the majors this year. If Sandovol improves before the deadline, you do not have to call Devers up from AAA. If Devers doesn't do well at AAA at least you have tried and then can go out and get a temp thirdbaseman if you think that will increase your chances of winning the World Series. But lets at least see whether Devers can hit at AAA before doing that. I know one of the mods wants to wait another week or so, and I guess that wouldn't be the end of the world, but why? What if it takes Devers a 6 weeks to adjust to AAA? Let's give him as much time as possible to do that.

Devers won EL POTW back in the first week of May, but no, not recently.

This terrific piece of writing at 20-80 offers maybe a clue on why Rafa is still in AA and IMO, why he should stay there for a little while. I also rememeber when Chris did an interview with Greenville's manager 2 years ago and he said that Rafa just loves practice and working on his craft, so this came with no surprise to me You've got to love this kid

I've liked Febles for a while based on the few things I've read, but he sounds like a future MLB manager here. His detail-oriented focus on process is fantastic. Love that he's in the system.

It's not uncommon for top prospects to basically skip AAA anyways

Devers is one of the best hitting prospects I’ve seen in a long time, love the whip he gets with his bat, it generates some crazy bat speed. Watching videos of his home runs this year is very impressive, along with the bat speed, the kid generates a ton of power from his core and his strength is obvious, it allows him to hit balls out to all fields, even on balls that he doesn’t barrel up (on several occasions). Also love the stories out there about his ability to make adjustments at the plate, that will be important for him in his career, and especially if the Sox try to fast-track him this year.

A prospect is fun to watch, but trading him for a sure thing in the Majors is never a losing deal.

He really needs to be on AAA already. If you know our team you know we don't give a **** about AAA. If you can hit AA you can hit AAA. When Farrell pinch hit Young for Sandoval I was like WTF is going on. Then Vazquez at 3rd I'm like holy ****. That's a clear cut message to Pablo. His time here is done and I expect him to be released any day. As much as I love him as a person he looks foolish most of the time and I read an article that says it best. Panda just isn't a major league player anymore. He shined when he had too we paid him but instead of paying him and playing him we just should pay him and cut him. I like Marrero but he can't hit so there is one simple answer. Time to show Devers what the big leagues are all about. He can split time with marrero until he is comfortable. Then it's his job to lose after the all star break.

Then it's his job to lose after the all star break. That's not true; the normal course is to get players to AAA first. Sure they will skip it but they have not indicated they want to push Devers this year but I think they are going to have to. Therefore, I think getting to AAA already makes a lot of sense so he can get a months worth of ABs before the trade deadline. AAA pitching is generally more advanced than AA pitching. The high end talent in AA may be better but too to bottom AAA is a lot more advanced.
