Considered by some scouts as the best left-handed hitter on the market, Devers' sweet swing and balance at the plate remind some scouts of Robinson Cano. A plus-bat, Devers consistently makes hard contact to all fields and has gap-to-gap power.
What's more, Devers, who shined in the International Prospect League, has also shown the ability to hit home runs and hit for average, primarily because he is rarely fooled at the plate and can recognize pitches.
There is some concern about his defensive actions at third base and if his arm is strong enough to keep him at the position in the future. Some believe he might be better served at second base or in left field. He is an average runner. Scouts also love his competitiveness, makeup and attitude. Per MLB.com.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm very excited about this guy. I think he has some serious potential. This is my guy in the next wave of prospects. I think he's as good as anyone in the next wave. Could have been the steal of all the international prospects. Furthermore, I think I'm in love.

His bat is definitely intriguing, and given the Rule 4 draft focus on pitchers and up-the-middle guys in recent years, the addition of a power hitter definitely piques my interest. I have doubts about whether he sticks at 3B, though, and with his build (short and stocky), I think he'll eventually move to LF or 1B as he fills out.

Yeah it's gonna be interesting to see what they can do with his body. He's gonna need to be dedicated to the program they put him on to improve his body. Another thing. They must really like his bat since they've been going for the all-around athlete who offers value both ways rather than the one tool player lately. They do a good job with their training program though so we'll see how they can work with him.

Scouts also love his competitiveness, makeup and attitude. Per MLB.com. BA didn't mention his makeup in their scouting report -- but this just confirms what I strongly suspected. Thanks for posting this. They certainly have an organizational need for a pure hitting talent, and then the most advanced LH bat on the market happens to be a guy who has the qualities they value above all others (ambiguity intended). No wonder they were regarded as the frontrunners to sign him from the outset.

I don't think 3B is a very likely spot he ends up staying at and I'm not sure he has the speed to play left with any consistency, so I say we should move him to first. 1B doesn't have to be a defensively sound position anyway.

There's a ton of pressure on a 1B-man to hit for average and power, so it'd be great to try him at a tougher defensive spot.
Also, mPaz, is there a link for the info from your first post?

No need to move Babyface off of third base now though. That's a decision that may be five years away. I guess the only reason to move him lower on the defensive spectrum immediately would be if he's so bad there defensively that he's more likely to hurt himself.
Norbit, you make a really good point - the Sox have definitely focused on athletic, multi-tool players in recent years, so for them to dole out this kind of money for a player whose bat is far ahead of everything else means they must be very impressed with it.

IIRC some where on this board or SOSH, I read he grew up almost 3-5'' from last year to this year and that he is close or slightly above 6' and 200lbs+. Any update on his recent size?

It was Ben Badler of BA who said he grew a couple inches as July 2 was getting closer. I believe it was up to 6'1". Don't know if that's accurate.

For what it's worth, in the above video, he still looks pretty short and stocky to my eyes.

I guess Bogaerts and Devers could very well be the Sox 3-4 hitters, lefty/right power combo for the 2018 and 2019 seasons. My guess is that they'll be the corner infielders for the Sox then or it's possible if Devers struggles defensively he becomes Ortiz's DH replacement?
Either way I'm pretty excited about Devers as the Sox lack power in the minor leagues and it sounds like Devers has it along with an advanced hitting approach.

He hasn't debuted the least we should be thinking is about what he is going to be in 2019. Million thing can happen. I hope he has a solid debut, that's all I'm thinking, so he can start a foundation to build on. That DSL season did wonders for Bogaerts.

Somewhere there's an alternate universe in which Ryan Westmoreland is in the outfield for the Sox and Andy Yount was a great pitcher for the Sox. Stuff happens. Still, Devers is important as he is one of the few true power bats in the system and he definitely has a shot at being a key member of the lineup someday. Hopefully he gets there.

Watching that video makes you think scouting must be ... easy! I mean, there must be tons of kids his age whose swing and bat speed so obviously project to a plus hit tool, even to a completely untrained eye. Then you realize how exceptional he actually must be. I'm impressed.

I'm impressed. Yeah, somewhere between Cano and Griffey Jr. He keeps the bat in the zone for a long time.

Nobody is asking the important question of whether he debuts on April 1, 2017, or whether they hold him back for service time to about June 2017, like Will Myers.

Neither, they trade him for Bryce Harper instead.
