People here have lost sight of the fact that Devers is a 17 year old kid literally seven promotions from the big leagues. He's really a senior in high school playing in a league that ordinarily is a complete after thought. If Devers makes it, and there's really no reason to think he will at this point, he's likely at least 5 years away - when he's 22 years old in 2019. If all goes well, we'll see him in Portland in 2017. The nice part of about the DSL and GCL is there's very little public scrutiny and prospects are allowed to develop on and off the field in relative anonymity. It seems to me Devers should get that benefit. I really hope he makes it, but I worry about the silly hype machine that is already starting. The hype will in no way assist him. Yeah, man. While we're at it, this site should probably lower him in the rankings so as not to put too much pressure on the kid. I mean, a few people on a message board he probably doesn't know exists and likely couldn't read if he wanted to anyway calling for him to be promoted to ROOKIE BALL? I don't know how any player can handle that.

If you have ever been to Lowell then you know it is a really low pressure situation with lots of families there as much for the in-game entertainment as there is for enjoying the game. I think it is a very good environment for recent draft picks as well as guys who are more advanced for the GCL. There is usually about 5,000 fans in Lowell and I suspect for most GCL games there are probably a few hundred. Additionally the bulk of the GCL Red Sox games are at 12 pm whereas the Lowell games generally have a mix of afternoon and evening games.
Devers is already getting significant attention from the likes of Badler, Parks, Speier, etc. Thus the hype machine is already in full throttle at this point for him. If he performs well in the GCL (presuming Gammons is correct that he has been promoted) then I hope to be fortunate to see him play in Lowell this summer.

Gammons is not correct in Devers promotion yet. I can stand by that 100%.

I know he has not been promoted. Doesn't mean he won't be but it has not happened yet.

I wish they'd promote him for my own selfish reasons... I just moved to the area and would like to go see him in a gcl game.

Gammons is not correct in Devers promotion yet. I can stand by that 100%. Six days to the GCL opener, hopefully that's target.

It's some scouts, some family, and that's basically it. 2) The fact that sending him to the DSL was an option, even if it winds up being temporary as I've said it probably will be since he was sent there, that's near-definitive proof that he's not going to Lowell, imo. If Lowell were in play, they would have just kept him in XST.

In the hot sun of Florida in June, July, and August at noon.....you better be a real fan. The only "pressure' in a setting like this is from the individual. You have to be self-motivated early.

Just out of curiosity, are DSL games open to the public? Do they even have seating?

Just out of curiosity, are DSL games open to the public? Do they even have seating? A complete guess on my part, but I'd guess they're "open to the public" in the sense that your local Legion team's games are open to the public. As in, sure, but nobody goes.

Never has there been more hype for a promotion out of the DSL than this one. Good luck to the kid. If all goes perfectly, we'll see him in Boston in 2018.

As a new Sarasota resident who has Ed Smith stadium literally in his backyard.... Can anyone fill me in on pertinent info to watching the GCL. The games are free and played on a side field behind the stadium. Almost all games start at noon. Every once in awhile a game MAY be played inside Ed Smith....but don't bet on it. 2 years ago they had the games in the stadium, but I understand they didn't want to pay the cost for a few attendants for the usual 20 to 40 people who show up. Wear a hat if the games are on the side field. It gets brutal some days in the heat. There are no concessions. Any other questions you may have....just send me a message. Welcome aboard!

There will be a lot of bumps in the road between now and Boston but if all goes well we may get a peek late in "17". That would put on the same track as Bogaerts. Kind of reminds me at this point in his development of a young MCab. I hope he continues to develop that way as he moves through the system. Its to bad he is not known for defense because LF has his name all over it.

You'll be disappointed 99 percent of the time and won't properly appreciate the shooting stars that make up the 1 percent. If he debuts late in 2018, then he probably does so as one of the top prospects in the system, at least.

So really it is not that he isn't promoted it is just he cannot travel into the States yet so he has to play there. The Sox need to Grease someone's palm and get it done.

Chris Mellen on Devers: (There's also a blip in there about Franklin Guzman, someone who is under the radar a little bit who I'll be watching more closely going forward.)
