I don't understand why he is not in Boston? The Sox are 26th in the league in home runs. I just don't get why Brentz isn't getting a look? His season is currently 5th all time in Pawsox homeruns and third in RBI's. Are the Pawsox records correct for RBI's? They list Pat Dodson at 2 with 102 and Alan Zinter at 3 with 69. That seems odd and would have Matt Dominguez probably ending the year ahead of Zinter? Earl Snyder had 36 dingers in the magical year of 2004 and only got a couple at bats with the Sox, but the 2017 team sure seems like it could use a little punch of the bench. Even just a look at Brentz, no?

His season at AAA has been very similar to Rhys Hoskins.

And wow, this thread is old.

Nick Cafardo @nickcafardo 6m6 minutes ago Dave Dombrowski said IL HR champ Bryce Brentz willl not get callup from Pawtucket. Brentz hit 31 HR but no 40-man roster spot available.
Looks like it's the end of the line for Brentz with the Sox.

If I was Brentz, I would feel massively disrespected by the Red Sox and it would definitely factor into any decision on whether to come back or not.

Not necessarily. They can add him to the 40 man roster in the off-season before he becomes a free agent. If they aren't adding him now, I really doubt they're adding him later. Why is that? They might not like him enough to get rid of Boyer, Abad etc. That doesnt mean they wont add him as soon as we get open spots from Chris Young, Nunez and Moreland becoming FAs.

They have 6 guys on the 60-day, 5 of which are locks to be added back. Plus they have more to add to protect for Rule 5. If they don't like him now, they aren't going to like him with no idea what he can do in the majors when he doesn't have an option left.

He becomes a FA the same time the rest of the guys do. It's pretty unlikely he plays another game with this org.

He would not become a FA if they add him to the 40 man, but I can't see them holding onto him and guaranteeing him a roster spot next year with no options. The time to add him to the 40 man is now so they can see if he can hit at all in the majors.

The fact that he's not on the team right now when Chris Young has been terrible all year so they can keep 12 relief pitchers including Blaine Boyer tells me what the team thinks of Brentz. Brentz over Young is pretty much a no-brainer upgrade at worst. At best, he could be hitting HRs every other day and help them finish the Yankees off. AND It would give them a clue about what he could do in the majors for next season. Now they don't know if they have to replace Young this winter.

The amount of playing time John Farrell would give Brentz the rest of the way would increase your knowledge of how Brentz could hit in MLB enormously. Maybe as much as 2%. Meanwhile, what a guy can do in AAA gives you a very good idea of what he'll do in MLB. Brentz projects to be an average MLB hitter, which means he'll be below average as an an outfielder, and he'll be a bit below average in the field, but he'll have big platoon splits and, if he can adapt to DHing, can be a very respectable platoon partner there, and an OK and dirt-cheap 4th OFer. The projected difference between Brentz and Chris Young vs. LHP the rest of the way is not large, because Young projects to bounce back towards his career level. This will remain true the rest of the season. Given Young's clubhouse reputation, I can understand Farrell sticking with him. I'm not endorsing it, just saying it's not incomprehensible. And it absolutely doesn't follow that not selecting Brentz now means they think little or nothing about him as Young's heir. It seems to much more a vote of confidence that Young can resume mashing lefties like he has his whole career.

The bolded has been discussed a lot in recent years and the conclusion is that the difference between AAA and the majors has never been greater. I am not convinced that Young bounces back. He hasn't been even an average hitter against anyone at any point of the season. He might just be done.

It's dumb that Brentz didn't get the call. I don't think it's a huge difference maker as in THIS is the reason they didn't beat the Yankees.... It's not like he was going to come up and be Giancarlo Stanton. But I do think there are some spots where he have bopped a few homers in September, something that they need, and they certainly don't hit lefties, and Chris Young is pretty cooked. It just doesn't make any real sense. It's not like the fringe of the 40 man roster was filled with irreplaceable talent.

Chris Young has been pretty bad so far this year, but it's only been 248 PAs, his peripherals have been pretty solid (the big drop is in BABIP) and he was a really good player as recently as last year. Players can decline pretty suddenly at his age (happy 34th birthday, Chris!), so it's very possible that this is irreversible age-related decline, but I don't think it's close to a slam-dunk case that Brentz is better than Young going forward. At the very least, it requires more analysis than "Young has hit poorly this year, Brentz has hit well, QED."

Given how easy it would be to DFA 2-3 relief pitchers (Boyer, Martin, Taylor), the latter two aren't even deemed good enough to bring up now, there just is no defense of this. Especially with their hitting struggles. They are not struggling with low leverage relievers, nor will any difference in quality of the low leverage relievers help them win a single game.

Well, let's look at what Brentz is - a potentially sudden vast improvement at the bat, but he's not a great defensive outfielder. It's possible that they're so down on his defense they don't see a spot for him.
That said, Chris Young has made 14 starts since the start of August, and 11 of those have been at DH. On a 40-man roster, you can fit Brentz's bat to see if it's worth trying to squeeze him onto a 25-man roster next spring (I'd have seriously considered sending him to the AFL to play first base, by the way). I tend to think Rusney Castillo is a much better fit as a 4th outfielder, but Brentz can fit as a 5th OF/1B/DH bench bat potentially.
As I tweeted last night, the idea that they can't fit him on the 40-man is preposterous. Martin is clearly going to be DFA for Smith, given that he's not coming up. But they brought Ben Taylor back, first on rehab and then activating/optioning him, to make 3 appearances for Pawtucket to close out the year. Ben Taylor. Not, like, an important major league arm who they want to have momentum entering next year (I'd have understood if, say, Robbie Ross came back to make a couple rehab appearances, but fungible up-and-down guy Ben Taylor. Maybe they thought there was a chance he could contribute in Boston, but if he's not coming up... what the heck was the point of that? Put him on the 60-day and call Brentz up. And honestly, if they're not comfortable calling Taylor up because he doesn't have enough innings, or because of his health, then why can't they fudge it and 60-day him?
They've mismanaged this. There's a chance they DFA Boyer or someone after the season is over in order to add Brentz to the 40-man (to the point someone made earlier that Brentz becomes a FA the same time everyone else does - that's not hard to work around), but I think the fact that they didn't make room on the roster says it all, honestly. I'd presume he's gone.

The organization has clearly concluded that they don't think Brentz is a meaningful upgrade on Young. In that light, bringing him up is pretty pointless. Five or six plate appearances a week wouldn't provide a meaningful basis for evaluation.

I will put a different spin on this. It isn't about evaluating Brentz. It is about winning games. The Red Sox offense is in a deep funk - I would think that trying some different things - like sitting Young, like plugging in an AAA big power hitter - at least is trying something.
Right now the Red Sox are demonstrating the definition of insanity many times, many games. It is baffling.
