Lackey got out of that one, but Farrell needs to get a reliever up the next time a baserunner reaches second base. Lackey's been hit hard early, and he's been missing up in the strike zone a lot. I think Lackey may be the pitching Gomes. Farrell will probably try to get as much as he can out of him, but that may well be no more than 6, and maybe only 5 innings tonight. You know that Lackey will battle the whole way, though. Early issues due to his relief in G4, or just random variation in command? Probably the latter, but you never know. The question is, how is the bullpen to be managed? Probably depends on what the Sox do offensively. We're going to need some runs in this one, and Wacha has certainly come out of nowhere to look like a real ace early in his career. This looks as if it will be one tough game for us to pull out.

A little Crow appetizer for us doubters from Gomes.
Then Xander swings at the first pitch after a 5 pitch BB. brutal.

Stephen Drew has cost himself a lot of money this postseason. I for one am no longer interested in giving him a qualifying offer

Come on Xander You gotta take That was a fastball right down the middle of the plate. Xander just got under it. exactly, he has shown good discipline and that was a hittable pitch he just missed Oh well, even in the American League there is a reason guys hit 7,8,9 in the order

Lackey got out of his trouble with grit. Wacha got out of his with stuff and raw talent. This kid is SOMETHING.

Ross can't hit that FB. Damn. This guy was rattled too. He didn't look rattled to me. He just came after people. It WAS the bottom of the lineup after all. You can make a case that it figured to be Xander or no one to do damage.

Either of these two seem lights out, we are about an inning or two away from a slugfest-or a relative slugfest for this series

Come on Xander You gotta take That was a fastball right down the middle of the plate. Xander just got under it. I get that but, if you're going to go after the first pitch after the guy threw 4 balls and a gentleman's 3-0 strike you better find some outfield grass or the bleachers.

Stephen Drew. The bat sucks, but that glove is so smooth.

Boo hiss me, I like Drew at SS, I wouldnt be heart broken seeing him back for 1-2. To take it a step further, its been watching him this post season that makes me say that over what I thought during the regular season. He is a streaky hitter but his defense is a difference maker, that has been even more apparent this post season

Wacha has that overpowering fastball but he's also a fly ball guy. When he misses, he misses up-- the Red Sox just need to hit the bad ones right on the nail. So far, they've popped it up, but the difference between a pop-up and a home run is a fraction of an inch.

Just what the doctor ordered. Let's get back at it. Yeah, that's the type of easy play to get through an inning that may help Lackey to get into more of a groove. Plus, it brings Holliday, the real HR threat, to the plate leading off the inning. The more you can do that, the better off you are.

So you should just concede strike one? C'mon man, this is 100% hindsight.

They're pitching Napoli inside, which would be my strategy as well. The dude has a long swing, and his power is more to all fields-- even his pulled balls are more pitches over the plate that he hooks.
