25 for 2014 Opening Day
|
Post by Mike Andrews on Nov 27, 2013 14:02:44 GMT -5
A predictions game for those of you who are sitting around waiting for Turkey Day: Pick the 25 players who you think will be on the Red Sox 25-man active roster on Opening Day 2014. Get your guesses in by the end of the weekend. We'll come back in April and see how many you got.

Lineup 1 Nava LF 2 Victorino RF 3 Pedroia 2B 4 Ortiz DH 5 Carp 1B 6 Bogaerts SS 7 Ianetta C 8 Middlebrooks 3B 9 Bradley CF Bench Eric Chavez (probably would see a lot of playing time if Middlebrooks continues to struggle) David Ross Franklin Gutierrez Jonny Gomes Pitching Lester SP Buchholz SP Lackey SP Doubront SP Peavy SP RP Koji CL Tazawa RP Breslow RP Miller RP Badenhop RP Crain RP Workman (Spot Starter too)
Looking this over, this team seems to be short one really good bat. I highly doubt this is going to be the team we see in April but I took a shot. If I get 20 out of 25 right, I'll be very happy.

The starting 9, Catcher= Ross, 3b= WMB, ss= Xander, 2B = Petey, 1b= Carp, Lf= Gomes, Cf= Bradley jr, Rf = Victorino, DH= Ortiz,
Pitchers= Lester, Lackey,Buch, Felix, Peavy, Dempster. Rp= Koji, Taz, Breslow, Workman, Miller, Bandenhop
Bench, Nava, Brentz, Holt, Lavarnway.
Couple of notes, Nava will spend more time at 1b with Carp thats why Brentz is up here. Morales lost Farrell's trust so I see a trade. I rather Britton than Miller but I see Britton getting more seasoning at AAA. I think they start the year with the 6 starters and just have Dempster the long man. I think the spring training verison of Jackie JR is gonna be Betts but he has to get seasoning at a quick AA and right to AAA, He is going to be a major weapon for this team in time. It seems the team can not get enough of Mookie. Keep an eye on Shaw inally. Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm going to cheat and just name the roster I think they ought to have, and hope they're as smart as me!
SP: Lester, Buchholz, Lackey, Doubront, Peavy Pen: Uehara, Tazawa, Miller, Workman, Breslow, Badenhop, Morales The 9: Ryan Hanigan, Carp, Pedroia, Middlebrooks, Bogaerts, Nava, Ellsbury, Victorino, Ortiz The bench: Ross, Gomes, Bradley, Cliff Pennington.
That's right, 22 returning players (although Napoli -> Bradley, Drew -> Bogaerts, and to a lesser extent Dempster -> Peavy, and Mortensen et al -> Morales are all really changes from last year as well).
A suggested alternate scoring system: each player on the actual roster is worth X points, where X is the number of posters who didn't name them. So Pedroia, etc., would be worth nothing, but being the only person to name the new catcher or Napoli replacement would be worth a ton.

I think people are forgetting Farrell's comment about needing power on the corner if JBJ is the starting CF. We need to replace Ellsbury's bat.

SP: Lester, Buchholz, Lackey, Doubront, Peavy Pen: Uehara, Tazawa, Miller, Workman, Breslow, Badenhop, Morales The 9: Lavarnway, [Napoli/Hart/Loney/Morse/Morneau for not more than 2 years or Hassan in a platoon with Carp (depending on how the market for available 1B free agents develops)], Pedroia, Middlebrooks, Bogaerts, Nava, Bradley, Victorino, Ortiz The bench: Ross, Gomes, Carp, [UIF TBNL as fungible 25th man]. Here is a list of available free agents: hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/11/23/2014-free-agent-tracker/It is understandable why Cherington will wait for relative bargains among the free agents or will make logical trades to fill needs from areas of organizational depth as occurred in the Badenhop trade on a small scale basis. Lavarnway, JBJ, Middlebrooks and Bogaerts have little or nothing left to prove outside the majors. The organization will display more patience giving them chances to prove if any or all belong. If Cherington pursues another catcher like Hannigan, I could see Lavarnway as the third option at catcher and platoon 1B with Carp. I don't see Ellsbury, Napoli, Drew or Salty returning except on team friendly contracts that don't impede the emergence of any top prospects. If they can get a Dexter Fowler quality player in a trade of some of their upper level RHP prospects, this could change the mix of the roster. However, it seems more likely that they will only try to resolve who will be their 1B regular and flexible UIF to start next season. My roster has them working out a "Dumpster" trade.

14. Mike Napoli
15. Dustin Pedroia
16. Will Middlebrooks

18. Daniel Nava
19. Jacoby Elsbury
20. Shane Victorino
21. David Ortiz
22. Ryan Lavarnway
23. Mike Carp
24. Michael Young
25. Jonny Gomes
Move Dempster (save 8m)
Resign Elsbury and Napoli. Els market won't develop outside the 5/110 range which keeps Sox in it. Nap is back with a 2/28 deal.
Sign Young to play utility role - gives good WMB insurance and can play enough short to spell Bogey when necessary and Holt in AAA gives backup short option should Bogey miss actual time.
Lavarnway catches
Bradley is in AAA another year filling in full time if a starter goes down. No true backup cf but don't need one with JBjr in AAA and Vic in right. Just like last year.
Workman in the pen as a setup guy means they don't need to overpay a guy like Wilson or Crain.

C Hannigan 1B Hart 2B Pedroia 3B Middlebrooks SS Bogarts LF Nava CF Bradley RF Victorino
Bench: Ross, McDonald, Carp, Gomes.
Rotation:
Lester Buccholz Lackey Doubront Peavy
Pen: Uehara Tazawa Breslow Miller Badenhop Workman Dempster
Notes:
Morales in trade for Hannigan. Napoli ends up signing a three or four year deal forcing the Red Sox to settle for Hart. Saltalamachia ends up getting a three year deal. Ellsbury gets six year deal.

Lineup: RF Victorino (R) LF Choo (L) 2B Pedroia (R) DH Ortiz (L) 1B Hart (R) C Saltalamacchia (L) SS Bogaerts (R) 3B Middlebrooks (R) CF Bradley (L)
Bench: OF/1B Nava (S) LF Gomes (R) C Ross (R) IF/OF Aviles (R)
Starting Pitchers: Lester (L) Lackey (R) Buccholtz (R) Doubront (L) Peavy (R)
Bullpen: Uehara (R) Tazawa (R) Miller (L) De la Rosa (R) Breslow (L) Badenhop (R) Villareal (R)
Don't think I'm gonna win this one as I was a bit less conservative than most.
- Nava would be the supersub in case things don't work out with Hart or Bradley - will likely get 500+ ABs (can insert Carp here if preferred)
- Trade Morales+ prospects Aviles and Dempster (+$4mil) with Carp for prospects to free up cap space. Chipping in $4 mil for Dempster - this should still free up about $11 mil.
- Workman will be stretched out in AAA and he and Britton will be the 13th and 14th men to fill-in for injuries.
- Signings: Choo 5/$85; Hart 1/$8.5 (with Beltre-esque option to lower cap charge); Salty 2/$24 (think he wants to come back and his market won't be as strong as predicted)

Lineup: Ellsbury CF Salty C Drew SS Peavy Dempster You are insanely over the payroll tax limit. A fair comment. I made some assumptions about escalators in the new contracts and I came up with a payroll of $190M, with the limit for next year at $189M. However, I think one or either Peavy or Dempster probably has to go. So I am revising my list, cutting Dempster and replacing him with Badenhop. In reality, if one of the AAA pitchers shows a lot in ST, it wouldn't surprise if the Sox traded either Lackey or Peavy, or both.

That $4M figure is an estimation of what he'd get in arbitration, but there's nothing stopping him and the Sox from coming to an agreement on a contract for less than that (which I think is more likely than the Sox paying $4M for half a season, or less, of a relief pitcher).
