To be fair, back when the Red Sox signed Drew, Brock Holt had yet to become BROCK HOLT! and the Red Sox were hovering around .500 (just before or in the early stages of their ten-game losing streak). At the time, it looked like the team desperately needed an upgrade to their left side of the infield and that even a small improvement could be enough to win the division title (the Blue Jays had yet to go on their winning streak). It was only after they signed Drew that everything started falling apart.

We needed OF/P help more badly than anything else and they failed to address it with the resources allocated for Drew.

It's really hard to make trades this early in the season, because most teams are in the playoff hunt enough that they're not willing to give up any players of value (and when they do, you have to overpay to get them). If there was a free agent outfield version of Drew, they probably would have signed him, but there weren't. Signing Drew now got them (in theory) an extra month-and-a-half of production as opposed to waiting until July 31st and hoping an outfielder was available and they were still in the race.

Is hard to disagree. You are right jmei, I guess I'm venting my frustrations with the FO a little bit. A lot of things happen behind the scenes that we aren't aware that change things significantly. Thanks for taking the time to explain this to me, much appreciated.

"in theory" being the key phrase.

It was only after they signed Drew that everything started falling apart. NO, they did not need help with the left side of the infield, and if they did it was a 3rd baseman, not a SS we already had that position covered. What everyone is speaking about is our historically bad outfield, that was the one thing we needed to address not an overrated player than can't hit his weight. At this point I will not go overboard if the Sox don't make the playoffs, but to ruin Xander's progression by signing Drew is unforgivable. Most people need to stop fantasizing about these stats that measure Drew's "value" and just rely on your own 2 eyes and some common sense to see that we did not need to waste 10$$ mil on this worthless player. And before you start posting a 100 links to prove your point, know that this frustration is not all aimed at you.
