Glad the Yankees were too stupid to sign him. This will help us.

SO we have no 40 man spot or 25 man spot… So more moves are a coming By my count the 40-man is at 39. And the 25-man move is pretty obvious - either Holt or Herrera is optioned. EDIT: And we're not sure yet when Drew will be active. And when WMB is back from DL?

Agree that this is the first of many moves that are necessary to right this ship. Need another OF (may be Nava to platoon with Gomes) and give Peavy and Buchholz a couple of more spins through the rotation to see if they can turn things around. If not, then put them on the DL and bring up Webster and either Barnes or Ranaudo to replace them in the rotation.

And when WMB is back from DL? Trade/DFA Carp and get WMB some reps at first? We'll probably go with the emergency 2B backup (Drew/WMB) and not have either Holt or Herrera. I'm personally fine with releasing Herrera. Carp should already be gone so we can get Nava back.

I like the move because it is making an attempt at bettering the team. The Sox have been way to passive if you ask me. I was happy at the time of the Tanaka signing that the Sox didn't give out that contract, but I was disappointed to know that they weren't even involved in him. They were ready to walk away from Napoli for a couple million. They missed the Hanigan trade also. I understand not overextending and developing the youth and what not, but at some point we are a big market team and have to commit to winning. This at least shows the Sox are not content with how this season is going.

Middlebrooks took some ground balls at 2B last year and will likely be the backup 2B again this year. It's not like Pedroia sits very often (and if he gets hurt, the Red Sox have Holt and maybe Betts ready in the wings), so having Middlebrooks be the emergency 2B isn't a terrible proposition. Plus, Middlebrooks might not be coming back from the DL anytime soon, which may have motivated this signing.

Any chance WMB or Bogaerts gets some reps in LF?

Two things.
A. Seems strange that Drew didn't hold out for a multi-year when we're just a few weeks from the draft. The MFY and Tigers had to be at least interested.
B. I think this puts the Sox over the cap and in this case, that would make Drew incredibly expensive. A salary dump almost has to happen. Only salary dumps I can see that would be enough and also wouldn't hurt the Sox significantly this year are either AJP or Peavy (with the Sox eating some of his salary).

Chad Finn ?@globechadfinn now I'm not saying the two hours' of meetings I just had at NESN are why Drew is back. Not saying they aren't, either

This will continue to be a flawed team but since this is a damaged Div. I see no reason why they can't stay competitive if Drew can remain on the field. At least he'll be playing for future contract (again). Even if you could have dealt with lousy SS play, WMB problems just made the left side too much of pain to deal with night after night.

I really am interested in the plans for WMB now. Because at this point, he's basically going to rot away on the bench unless they're sending him to AAA to learn a different position.

(1) He's hurt, with no timetable to return. (2) "Rot" is more than a slight exaggeration. If he plays 3B every game against lefties, he'll still start a third of the games, with the occasional pinch-hitting appearance.

Not really a fan of this...seems like a total overreaction to a poor start to the season. Rather see X get all the time as SS.

I thought it was less than that because of the Capuano signing. I'm also not sure how Sizemore's incentives fit in and that's a $5m variable. Another note. Boras runs a training facility which is one of the best in the country.

And I'll believe that Drew sits vs. LHP when I see it. Last year wasn't long ago. I'm also not a fan of bouncing Bogaerts back and forth between SS and 3B.

Wow how bad does Boras look? A. The must feel the division is up for grabs. B. Drew just steadys the defense and probably lets Xander move over and breathe a little. C. WMb dont know what to say about him. D. Cecchini they dont want to rush him,He is going to get his at bats. I learned my lesson most of the prospects need there at bats at the levels. Very rarly is there someone who can just excell at the MLB. Finally , we would not of won the ALCS w/o Xander against that Tiger team. No one picked us aainst the Cardinals also. They still need another move.

Nick Cafardo ?@nickcafardo 9m This is our understanding: Drew will go on the active roster Wednesday but will go play in the minors for 7-10 days.
