Cafardo (per mlbtraderumors.com):
The buzz around baseball is that the Cubs will be all in on Jon Lester. Cubs president Theo Epstein, GM Jed Hoyer, and Jason McLeod were in Boston with Lester during his trying times. Also, the Cubs will have to rebuild their rotation at some point and adding Lester would be a major, major step in that direction.

Well sure - They went $148M on Tanaka so they have the cash. And that team is starved for pitching and has a surplus of bats/power.
I've been hoping all along that Theo and Jed genuinely believe Owens is a legit #2 because then H.O. and one of the others could be packaged for Bryant.

Yeah, I don't believe the "blind bid" reports on any true free agent. How is an agent doing his job if he does that?

Lester and Jake Arrieta are going to make a fine lefty/righty one two punch for years to come.

The Cubs are looking at starting their own TV network with 1/2 their games next year but still have a deal with Comcast until 2019. In some ways it may not be in their interest financially to be a top team in 2015 if it requires a lot of money but by the time 2018 rolls around and they are trying to build thier own network or are negotiating a new deal they will absolutely want to be a contender. You could make a strong case though to have some sort of media splash next winter if they do launch their own network. When teams come up on media deals these days it's a game changer. Let's hope Scherzer is higher up Chicago's list and Lester really wants to come back to Boston.

Locking this thread. Further discussion of Lester belongs in a general non-Red Sox thread.
