Right and I disagree that this is a potential benefit and used a hyperbolic example to illustrate that. I don't see why you are mad.
You did say "overpay". For a player like Carp I disagree that having a solid backup plan in case someone overpays for him has any value.

Grady had the same surgeries of Matt Kemp. I could be wrong, but I don't believe this is true at all. Kemp: Left Shoulder, left ankle Sizemore: left elbow, lower abdomen, left knee, sports hernia, back, right knee And there's also the massive disparity in money, so the comparison is apples and oranges. They're both outfielders is about it. Yikes. Now that you put it that way, yikes. Well, at least his wrist were okay.

We are also missing the Kemp knee injury in 2012 as well as his multiple hamstring injuries in both 2012 and 2013. His left shoulder has two of the worst injuries with a rotator cuff and torn labrum that he had to have a second surgery after 2013.

You did say "overpay". For a player like Carp I disagree that having a solid backup plan in case someone overpays for him has any value. That's pretty much self-evidently not true. If Carp has any value to the team at all, having a backup plan in case he leaves for some reason has value, pretty much by definition. His leaving could be by trade, because of injury, or because he decides to trade his uniform for sackcloth and dedicate himself to a monastic existence of service to the lame and impoverished. Certainly, not having a backup plan for Carp wouldn't stop the team from improving itself by trading him, but it's better to have a backup plan for his role on the team than to not have one.

Sure if you assume in a vacuum that the cost of said backup plan is zero. It's not and hence the discussion.

As for Sizemore, it's seven SURGERIES in 4 or 5 years. Not even injuries, just surgeries. Zoinks.

Interesting podcast on the Bradford files with a doctor talking about knee injuries. He said micro fracture surgery usually takes 8 months to come back from and is usually most effective for first 2 years then starts to breakdown. By breakdown he means the artificial scaring the surgery produces that's designed to help the athlete, starts to lose it's effect.

Villarreal cleared waivers, so the only real downside of this move is the $750K in luxury tax space that Sizemore carries.

Nick Cafardo, FWIW, mentioned in an interview on MLB radio channel yesterday, that the Sox are hoping Grady seizes the CF job so they can send JBJr to Pawtucket for a little more seasoning. The Sox were impressed during Sizemore's workout with his speed and athleticism.

Cafardo is like the beat writer for the Sports Radio crowd, however, it did get me thinking.
If Grady was healthy enough at the beginning of the season to give us what you could expect from a talented rookie with little upper level experience then getting Bradley just enough additional seasoning to not burn up a year's worth of service time would serve the long term interests of the team very well. In effect, we would be using Grady's salary to gain an additional year of Bradley and it wouldn't have even cost us Villarreal.

Probably a stretch, at best. Depends on a few things: Are the Sox ok foregoing the great defense Bradley is sure to give them for a guy relying on microfracture surgery - in both knees- to regain some semblance of the mobility he once had? That is a roomy center field in Fenway.
And can Sizemore get his timing and stroke back after two years away from major league pitching? That's an even larger issue.

Well, if you think about it, if Sizemore breaks down, then you're back to having Bradley in CF, which everyone would be fine with. It does seem pretty clear that Sizemore and Bradley could be redundant on a roster with everyone healthy.

A defensive alignment of Sizemore, Bradley, Victorino would be nice. Too bad inter-league play is no longer in a single contiguous period. We could have Bradley start in AAA, then when IL comes along, Gomes has a tattoo related injury.

We could have Bradley start in AAA, then when IL comes along, Gomes has a tattoo related injury. This is what they are hoping for IMO as their best case scenario. Nava or Carp could be the backup and long term DH if and when injuries or age catch up with Ortiz. If Sizemore shows that he can't come back within those first 6 weeks, it was a cheap if failed experiment. Either way, if the extra seasoning allows them to keep Bradley for that extra year, it might be worth it.

It does seem pretty clear that Sizemore and Bradley could be redundant on a roster with everyone healthy. I'd like to think the team has a better plan for him than to play him till he breaks down. Not so sure about the redundancy either. Ellsbury was hurt enough that he didn't quite make it to 135 games played last year, but Victorino never even got to 125 games. I think he's a question mark, enough so that it's easy to imagine 250-300 AB at a minimum, maybe more, for a Sizemore who doesn't break down, given that he's used carefully. That's one of the reason's I thought the signing was such a good one. Bradley's never played more than 130 games in any given year, Victorino may be gradually breaking down physically, and Nava/Gomes are marginal at best in left, with Nava barely a placeholder in right as a replacement if Victorino can't play. Put all that together and there's a real opportunity for somebody, or maybe a few somebodies. I think the Sox would benefit greatly if Sizemore could be one of those guys.

I agree with Norm's post and think that if everything goes right, Sizemore will end up with a lot of playing time alternating between all three outfield positions but with Bradley being the eventual starter.
One other big advantage to starting Bradley in AAA to save a year's service time is that at the same time, we are also buying that amount of time to not have to trade the even more redundant Carp. We're obviously not going into the season with 6 outfielders, three of which are left fielders on the 25 man. Putting Bradley in Pawtucket allows us to make sure everyone is healthy before trading anybody.

Right now think of Sizemore as this year's Rocco Baldelli without the #5. Expect the best but plan for the worst. Having the JBJ to AAA option is a nice backup if more time is needed.

There's also the 5% chance that Sizemore is ... Grady Sizemore! And looks like he can start in CF until Margot or someone else is ready. In which case, the odds of making a major deal next winter (e.g., for Stanton) go up, with the expendable JBJ as a potential key piece. Alternatively, if we gain that kind of depth (and even if Sizemore comes back fairly big but is limited to LF except as a backup) next winter could be a good time to deal Nava (or Carp), something I've been opposed to doing now.
