I don't believe one player's success on the field can trigger others around him to be noticeably better or worse.
Beane had just as much to worry about in the rotation (with Kazmir and Gray both hard to rely on for 200+ inning loads and guys like Chavez having their magic wear off) as in the lineup, and starting pitching outside of Lester and Samardzija has proven to be a serious weakness in the second half as well. There were also a lack of bats available at the deadline-- the best hitter who was traded (outside of Cespedes) was probably Josh Willingham or Austin Jackson. Beane did look to fortify the offense, grabbing Adam Dunn in August.

I'm explaining why Beane gave up significant future assets to upgrade his club even though the Athletics were the undisputed best team in baseball at the time. In your analogy, I'm saying the Red Sox should have traded future production for present production even though they were rolling as of the trade deadline (which they did in dealing Iglesias for Peavy). Those first half wins are banked, and considering what a crapshoot the playoffs are, a team in that situation should absolutely see if it can improve the talent on the club enough to win the division despite expected regression. Did you read the article? Literally every position player hit worse in the second half, many significantly so. Keeping Cespedes would not have magically kept the offense running at its first half levels. This is the part I don't agree with... to win a pennant someone has to be the spark that steps up and contributes his best. If you take that person out of the lineup for the near future there is no one than to keep the team up and playing above or at their better level. You mean like Jonny Gomes? This logic reading Cespedes and the death of Oakland's offense really just has everything wrong with it. Correlation/causation BS, hindsight BS, crazy unsubstantiated BS claims about players making other players better somehow... honestly, find me one person who predicted any of this the day the trade went down, because at the time everyone was penciling in a Tigers/A's ALCS.

Just realized the Angels are easily going to win 100 games this year. Wow. And thats with Garrett Richards out for the season. Thats really too bad for them.
I still like Oakland to win the one game playoff.
I like the Tigers and Nats for the WS. Would be funny though if the Angels beat the Dodgers at the end.

The Yankees #2 hitter is slashing .211/.254/.256 since the ASB. A team that has been no more than 5 games out of the WC race and making in-season acquisitions like they're going for it.
That's respect. Hat tip, Derek.

The next Yankee SS will likely be the best they've had since 2009.

They needed to go with Drew instead?

The talk, not just on this board but everywhere, was that their infield stank. So it has. Keeping Jeter at SS and acquiring Drew for whatever reason were not going to fix that. The eyebrow raiser for me has been how poor Teixeira's season has been at .218/.319/.403. Headley helped a little but he hasn't been overwhelming by any means, and Solarte's line in SD is better outright. There's just not much there.

$45M next year for the Yankees for two corner IF's, one who hasn't played in a year, and one who is barely a league average hitter (102 WRC+) in 2014 and was awful in limited time in 2013. That's a mess

Jacob DeGrom watch: First time through the Marlin's batting order tonight, he literally struck out the first 8 hitters and then gives up a hit to the pitcher, Jarred Cosart.

Bob Nightengale ?@bnightengale 7m Closer Jonathan Papelbon of the #Phillies receives 7-game suspension and fined for his gesture in Sunday's game.
Bob Nightengale ?@bnightengale 7m Apparently, #MLB didn't buy Papelbon's response saying he was only adjusting himself when they came down with the stiff penalty.
Bob Nightengale ?@bnightengale 3m The #Phillies showed their angst with Papelbon by announcing they agreed with immediate 7-game suspension, and apologize to fans.
Papelbon is classless, surprise, surprise.
Jayson Stark ?@jaysonst 10m #Phillies issue a fascinating statement on Papelbon suspension. Say they don't have authority to make "official judgments" about this but...
Jayson Stark ?@jaysonst 8m #Phillies go on to say they "apologize to our fans for the action of our player" -- even though they're not passing "official" judgment. OK

Was it "wrong" for Papelbon to do that, sure. But a 7 game suspension? That seems extreme given their suspensions for other things
I'm sure it didn't help that it's Papelbon and he's rarely been known as the "good" guy

It didn't help that Papelbon got pretty vocal insisting that he was just adjusting his uniform and then blaming it on the umpire because they have a history but, if you look at the video there's absolutely no way.
Ken Rosenthal ?@ken_Rosenthal 19m Told that Papelbon’s penalty did not simply result from crotch grab. MLB determined that he bumped West once and Marty Foster twice.

No problem with Paps suspension, but what about Joe West? The ump put his hands on a player. He should get some time off .

It's a fair question to ask, but at the same time, Pap was right in his face and bumping his hat, so West's behavior might have been justified. That said, it's very possible that West was also disciplined in some way-- if I remember correctly, they don't publicly announce umpire discipline (though it sometimes leaks through the press).

Watching Colon in his game vs the Marlins here and finding it interesting that his velocity dip is so obvious. Yes.. He's 41, but don't forget last year he was still capable of bringing it up to the plate, on some limited occasions of course, at 94-5mph and then at pitch counts 100 and above.
Have just finished watching 2 innings of his where his count ended and count was at 80 and his max velocity was 90. Velocity on FB was 86-88. Colon was going the same route mostly, using his change and cutting his fb.
Is his nearly 2y from getting away from doping the reason for the drop off (.5mph at fan graphs) or is it just age from 40 to 41?

Colon sat 89-90 the half-dozen or so times I saw him last year. A .5 mph dropoff for a guy his age is less than I'd expect.

I was looking for him to jack it up on that every once in a while pitch tonight, like he would in games with Oakland last year. Maybe he didn't feel the need, was ahead 7-1 at the time and went back and watched up until 8thIP, still didn't.
Colon had ability to touch that high on occasion, though he sat 88-90.. Maybe 91. I just wonder if he's lost it at all now James. He finesses with the FB anyway and the 95 was a rider high, out of the zone.

I wonder how Dave Stewart will do as GM and if he will try to make a splash trade to put his stamp on the franchise. Sounds like John Hart will be the guy in Atlanta.
