Matt Albers haved 3.3 BB and 5 SO last year, which was not significantly worse (but worse it was) than his career SO/BB ratio. I'd be surprised if he is a better than average MR, let along someone who is a very good reliever.

I'd be surprised if he is a better than average MR, let along someone who is a very good reliever. Albers had the third highest GB rate of anyone with more than 60 innings pitched, last year at a ridiculous 66%. BP puts it succinctly: "he generates a constant stream of groundballs". He's very effective.

Any other very good relievers with a 1.5:1 so/bb ratio?

Let's keep this to the Yankees, please.

Tex out of the game with a leg injury. The weakest infield defense in baseball just got worse.

Teixeira just left the game in the 2nd inning with an apparent hamstring injury.
Tanaka with a bumpy start. Lead off home run for Melky, then a few seeing eye singles, an error, and another single through the hole leads to two more runs on the 2nd.
His stuff still looks pretty good though.
2IP 4H 3R 2ER 0BB 4K so far

I guess Brian Roberts is the yanks back up first baseman. If that doesn't stop the fear of the Yankees nothing will.
Brian Roberts came in the game when Tex came out but Kelly Johnson is playing first.

Tanaka not on his game right now. That fastball is straight and if he leaves it up, he's going to have problems.

Admittedly I turned the game off after the 4th, but Tanaka's line suggests he settled in quite nicely.
7IP 6H 3R/2ER 8K
I agree with Norm, he needs to keep his fastball down, but his secondary pitches passed the non scout eye test. His splitter looked as advertised, and his slider was tight, commanded both well.

Tanaka does not throw his splitter for strikes...whether that is good or bad....Many of them bounced in and still the batters swung...even knowing that with 2 strikes, they were going to see that pitch. I don't see him throwing it early in the count because a less anxious hitter will likely lay off and it will be a ball. But, he had remarkable control of his other pitches so he never put extra men on. It looks like he will be tough, at least the first time around.

The issue for hitters is they can't tell it's a splitter. He doesn't have to or really want to throw for strikes. Tanaka, like 95%, of the starters will get hit when he leaves a fastball up and on the fat part of the plate. Jose Fernandez left a couple balls like that too in his first start that got crushed. Tanaka looked very legit though and I'm sure Yankee fans are excited.
Teixeira getting hurt on that play is simply comical from a RS perspective and sad from a NYY one. That's an old out of shape guy injury. Do some fn Yoga for Christ sake - it's your job to be in top condition.

Tex to the DL.....this lineup is so fragile and so NOT deep,
They spent how much this offseason? I honestly can't remember. 400 mill? 500 mill? All that, and their 6 through 9 hitters today are Kelly Johnson, Cervelli, Solarte, and Anna. I'm not saying they should have copied our recent free agent spending strategy to a T, but they really should have considered spreading the money to create more depth, especially given the state of their farm system.

Pineda did look really good today. They are going to struggle to score without Texeira. Zero hr's in five games.

Don't forget they get ARod back next season and for three total I believe. I mean big money too. So we'll be dropping payroll and they will be adding another 25 million to there team.

Any amount of actual research would be appreciated. Rodriguez adds approx $19mm in payroll. They lop off Jeter ($12mm), Soriano ($4mm AAV, due to cash subsidy), Ichiro ($6.5mm), Kuroda ($16mm), Johnson/Roberts ($5mm combined)

I believe these are payroll numbers and not luxury tax numbers, but according to Cots, these are the Yankees numbers for next season.
In 2015: Arod $22m Teixiera: $23.125m CC: $23m Tanaka: $22m Jacoby: $21.143m McCann: $17m Beltran: $15m Gardner: $12.5m Thornton: $3.5m Ryan: $2m Nova, Phelps and Cerveli and Pineda Arb... (Nova will have a salary probably around $5m, while the others will <$2m each)
That's about 170m in payroll for 14 guys

Nova, Phelps and Cerveli and Pineda Arb... (Nova will have a salary probably around $5m, while the others will <$2m each) If Phelps has more outings like yesterday he'll be a non-tender.

According to Forbes Arod has additional bonuses of 6 million if he hits 660,714,755 , and then tying and breaking Barry bonds record of 762. Currently he needs 6 more home runs for the 1st bonus. I believe he will achieve this in 2015. The 660 is Willie Mays record.

But he is so effective, deceptive...whatever....that batters swung at several that bounced in front of the plate......Amazing. Pineda looks dominant. Good FB, sharp curve and excellent control. As to Tex, yeah that was a pretty freaky injury....about like WMB getting hurt before the game and going on the DL. I ran track for 8 years (no I did not 'stay back') and never had a hamstring injury or anything approaching it. If fact, in all that time I only remember one guy, a hurdler, who had one. He was running on an indoor dirt track and as he jumped to get over the hurdle, a big chunk of dirt gave way and he landed on the hurdle. I don't think these guys properly warm up. No 30 yard stride before a game should "disable" a ballplayer.
