Honest question...How is UZR gonna treat those Bogaerts diving attempts. Were those indicative of average or less than average range? To be fair, one of those grounder (the second one, if I remember correctly) was hit pretty hard, while the first one was hit pretty far from where he was initially positioned. But yeah, Bogaerts' range does not look that great, at least to my untrained eye. He seems to not have the best first step and his height hurts him when he has to get low to field something.

That should be the end of the Grady Sizemore experiment. Nice story, but this isn't summer camp. Guy has been away for two years and dealt with tough injuries and operations, should not expect him to ready in the first week or so. Expect that the Sox will give him at least a month. But when you let someone like Ellsbury walk, and only had an untested rookie to replace him, wtf did you expect. Likewise when they let Lester walk, wtf is really going to replace him. It takes time for pitchers to develop, look at Felix and before him Clay; likewise, Lester when he started. Sox do not want to chase the market, and are either arrogant or stupid enough to believe they can replace some players. BTW, does Gomes swing anymore?

Who will they get their clutch postseason hits from with Drew gone? I think we're better off without another Boras contract on our hands. We're strapped enough as it is and need to retool.

As in incorporate the kids into the lineup and get a good young outfielder at some point. Drew was good defensively but that wasnt really a long term solution. We need money to lock up guys like Lester and Xander, people we want to keep long term.

I'm watching from the Gameday @ work. Just disappoint by their awful play today. It already 5 GIDP from the RS hitters. Didn't John Farrell made the fans angry enough to leaving the Fenway early for home?

Salty just got smoked by Gio Gonzalez if that makes anyone feel better about losing him.

We need money to lock up guys like Lester and Xander, people we want to keep long term. It should be pretty obvious at this point that Drew isn't going to cost any amount of money that will prevent the Red Sox from signing Lester or Xander or really anyone else at this point. The Red Sox probably have more financial flexibility at this point than anyone in baseball.

So much for the reverse jinx or whatever ... after I post the huge situational splits, Sox go 5/11, 3 BB, 2 2B (.455 / .571 / .636) with the bases empty, and 5/18, BB, 2B, 5 GDP with runners on (.333 SA and a net .053 OBP). At least they hit better with RISP then with a man on 1B ...
At this point, it would seem to be in their heads at least a little, but one good day with RISP tends to erase that.

Hey do we want to revisit that "Doubront had a statistically significant streak of being really good last year so obviously that means something" bit of analysis again? Obviously negated by BSOHL. Seriously, the analysis was about having more upside than you'd expect from a typical guy with his overall numbers. Which implied ...

Well, better to get this out of our system now than in October. May need to pull the old switch a roo with Workman and Doubront. I for one will always be thankful for Doubront's big pitches he made for us in the 2013 playoffs. Not sure where Breslow figures into this equation.

35 pitches, 9 outs in a row. Goodbye, Felix. Hello, Brandon. Doubront had the dead arm towards the end of spring. I wonder if it's been an issue?

I'm not going to jump on the anti-Doubront bandwagon, as it's one bad start on April 8th. However, he's now had 58 starts since the beginning of 2012, and we still don't know whether or not he's good. Has any Red Sox pitcher in recent memory been given such an opportunity to establish himself without doing so? For comparison's sake, it seemed like Brian Rose tried to establish himself for years, and he only made 39 starts. Matsuzaka seems like the only relatively similar case, but he had a 126 ERA+ in his first two seasons and was making a boatload of cash. The only cost sunk into Doubront is his development. The Red Sox have had a level of patience with him that, whether good or bad, is atypical of the organizations usual approach over the last 25 years.
Short version - I usually roll my eyes at people who call for a player's (or manager's) head in game eight of the season, but I'm sympathetic to the frustration with Doubront even if not in agreement with it.

It is after all why teams have minor league systems, so that they can produce guys who work out at the major league level. That's if you give them a spot and let them play. The only way JBJ has one now is because of injures, but he looks to me like he's ready to contribute. You either trust the projections or you don't. There's a reason why Bradley has been #2 on this site, and in the top 50 on a lot of the ML prospect lists. In any case, right now they need all outfielders they've got on hand, and luckily he's one of them. It's going to take Sizemore a while to relearn the position. Everyone should be patient, and glad that they do have Bradley with Victorino on the DL.

My my, aren't you a touchy old grouch. Excussee me. He no doubt has skill sets, but it takes time. Ellsbury had his hurdles at first. I am sure he will be fine, but I don't know projections that well, as don't feel it is a science, more a guideline that varies from player to player. But that's me, just not as brilliant as you. If it makes you feel better, it may be the case that he paid his dues last year and is a fast learner. But we are taking about just a few games this year. Be cool Rico and have a cocktail .

He had all of 100 at bats last year and that wasn't enough to tell anything. And he's not going to hit .400 this year either, no matter what the first 20 at bats tell us. Put 'em out there and let 'em play. It's simple.
