Is he better than JBJ? I'm not putting Victorino near the wall. Probably equivalent, but you're taking his average/below-average bat with the trade-off that his defense is spectacular. If you nullify his defensive value, he has little use. I wouldn't call that OBP below average. Half the games are away from Fenway, and then there are all the games that Victorino misses. And you could also sit JBJ vs. tough LHP. I mean Nava plays more RF than LF for the Red Sox.

I mean Nava plays more RF than LF for the Red Sox. His OBP has primarily been accrued against LHP's, since Texas mostly platooned him. Anyway, I agree he'd be a great addition as a platoon player. But 73% of PA's taken in the majors are against RHP's, so you're going to expose him if he plays full-time.

Career .292/.380/.402 versus lefties. Even if his defense wasn't elite, he'd be a great platoon partner for Bradley and backup at each of the outfield spots. I was responding to someone who wanted to make him a full-time LF. Ah, I see. I'm on team temple on this one-- Gentry is totally wasted as a full-time left fielder in much the same way that Nava is wasted as a full-time RF. You want Gentry playing mostly versus lefties and as high on the defensive spectrum as possible.

But he'd definitely be a huge upgrade over Gomes defensively as the LF/CF platoon and backup RF/CF. Or put JBJ in RF if he has the better arm. But oh well, not happening now. I was also pretty high on Bourjos as well.

Our OF situation doesn't look too hot. How bout this in 2016? Xander - LF, Mookie in CF and JBJ in RF.

Sox are going to need to score lots of runs in Clay's starts if this is all he has. Might as well start today with 8 or 9 runs.
I get the frustration over the defense though. Bad as I've seen over the first few weeks for a sox team.

Buchholz line today:
ERA 23.14 FIP 3.51 xFIP 4.08
For the season:
ERA: 7.71 FIP: 4.79 xFIP: 3.51
Time to stop with the panicking.

Clay Buchholz batted ball number this year have some real anomalies in there ... his GB% is about normal for his career, his LD% is actually down a tick, and his FB% is up a bit. But he's got a mind-boggling 20% HR/FB ratio and a maybe-even-more-mind-boggling 11.1% IFH percentage, nearly double his career average.

His fastball velocity is also at a career-low 90.3 mph, down a mile and a half from last year (and that's even before today's game, where he was in the high-eighties regularly). I'm on board with the "don't panic" message, but let's not pretend there isn't any reason to worry.

They just keep chipping away. Baltimore's bullpen is shaky. Top of the order is coming up. Let's do this.

I will never give up on Buchholz, his stuff is just too good. Give him time.

I'm on board with the "don't panic" message, but let's not pretend there isn't any reason to worry. Sure, there's definitely reason to worry ... but it's like worrying about the whole team right now: if things continue the way they are, it's an issue. But some of the failure is fluky, and some of it may well change (will his MPH bump up a bit as his arm strengthens?) ... concern is appropriate, panic is definitely not. I maybe have passed into mild worry but no more than that. Roster construction is a legit issue. I worry about the defense on the left side of the infield. I'm withholding judgement on the outfield for a bit, though, although Nava's a real black hole out there.

Love having that arm in CF. I don't think Damon or Ellsbury could have thrown it that far.
