It is weird to be annoyed when they win. Being ahead two more spots in the draft at this point is much more advantageous than two totally meaningless wins. Nice to see the kids play well and that this team is still trying, but I'd rather see them pick 5th than 7th.
It's so strange actually rooting for the Sox to lose. I think TonyC said it best. I root for the kids to excel and some vet cough up the lead or hope the Sox strand the bases loaded a bunch of times (good for individual stats, but bad for actually putting runs on the board) or weird stuff like that.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with being pissed about the Red Sox winning at this point in the season. Remember, it's not just being a pick or two higher in the first round- it's being a pick or two higher in all 50 rounds. Thats a really negligible point. I can faintly understand why you would want to pick 5th rather than 7th. Depending on how a draft breaks down, it can be the difference between a Frazier and a Ball. In other words, its feasible that you identify a strong top tier or 5 players and you happen to be picking 6th which could be unfortunate. But in the 2nd round and beyond, thats a really negligible difference. I would imagine its quite rare that a team has a specific player targeted in those rounds and that player gets scooped in the prior 1 or 2 picks before their draft position. I think thats especially true past round 3. Not saying its impossible, but thats such a minor thing to worry about, and subsequently root against our current talent pool for the opportunity to draft a player that may or may not reach the majors several years from now. I've made the same comment as whalers on a few occasions. I can see the thought that the effect may be negligible after the first couple of rounds, but in truth, we can't know that. It would be interesting to have some information from people in the draft room about how often it occurs that a team has someone they are interested in at a particular point in the draft other than the very top who is taken a couple of picks before theirs comes up.

If you look at the nfl draft, bow many times has Belechik drafted a 3rd round talent in the second round because he knew the player wouldn't be there when their pick came up again.
I know the difference in drafting a few spots higher each round is minimal, but it might mean the difference between grabbing a top 30, 50, 100 etc. talent that's falling and just missing out.

No, it doesn't. That pick is very close to a 3rd round pick anyway, so if we lose the pick, we'll keep the 3rd rounder which we wouldn't have if we didn't trade for the pick. Also Lester and Headley don't require QOs neither does miller or Koji, and Id guess someone like Masterson wouldn't require one. I think we can easily fill all our holes without more than 1 QO, and it's not a big deal if we give up more than 1 Signing Lester, Miller, and Koji, plus one QO free agent would work for me. Keep the top 10 pick, no second rounder, but basically 2 3rd rounders.

I mean we still have a shot at 5. I wonder how the Twins did against the Tigers this season. I mean look at this list the Twins have been on it forever and nothing looks like it changing. At least the Cubs are graduating kids this season. Houston is another pathetic bunch espc what they accomplish this draft.
I am dying to see how Theo puts toghether this pitching staff. Or let me guess he wants to wait till his pitchers graduate also. He just started drafting pitching this year. I will be impressed if they go after Lester hard.

I did pick Easley, though, but it was in the second, not the first. Next year I'm hoping for AJ Cann in the first and Todd Gurley in the second. Now, back to mlb. C'mon guys, let's go out there and lose one for the Gipper.

Looks like no Napoli, Holt, or Ortiz for the last few.....Tanks for the memories 2014 sox! Good point .... The Sox ought to put some of these vets who shot the season to hell back in for the last weekend. The kids are playing entirely too competently and screwing up the Sox's draft position. AAAHHH - Koji in to close out the game. Could he possibly cough up a 10-run lead? Nope - missed it by THAAAAAAAAAT much.

Houston, Minnesota and the Cubs on the verge of winning and the Yankeees completing a 3-2 win over the Sox. Could be good night in race for No, 5.

Draft budgets go up exponentially as you near the top of the draft. Right now they could pick anywhere in the 5-9 range. Here's how the slot money broke down in that range in the 2014 draft: 5 $3,851,000 6 $3,575,900 7 $3,300,900 8 $3,190,800 9 $3,080,800 That nearly $800,000 spread could mean an extra two or three high talent guys signed. It's a shame that we won those series against Tampa and Baltimore. Slot money bumps up by roughly $1 million per spot if you get any higher. Also screw Houston for not signing Aiken.

The sad thing is that the big international pool we'll be given will almost be meaningless. Here's to hoping for a 2015 International Draft.

Also screw Houston for not signing Aiken. The projection has Aiken in the top 3, so the extra pick will be offset by the extra player by the time they get to us.

There's value in the fact that IFA pool money can be traded It's a comparative low cost market and we could easily trade enough money for a team to sign an additional top player.

We know that Houston will not be drafting Aiken, even if he is available when the Astros select. A player has to give his approval before he can be redrafted by a team. Hell will freeze over before Aiken will give the Astros permission to redraft him.

Hell will freeze over before Aiken will give the Astros permission to redraft him. I think it's the other way around. In a chat, Keith Law recently pointed out that he had yet to hear a single executive say that Houston did anything wrong or inappropriate. He mentioned that only the Houston Chronicle (which was Aiken's agent's platform) blamed the Astros. If you notice, after the medicals, Houston offered the minimum they could offer without losing the draft pick the following year. I'm guessing Aiken will be drafted high but won't be offered what Houston offered. In the words (sortof) of my daddy, if it looks like a scumbag issue and smells like a scumbag issue, it's probably time to find another agent.

I don't justify how Houston gets a #2 overall pick in 15 because they didn't sign the #1 pik the year before due to a medical? Seems to me they should have done more advanced scouting on the kid before they made the pick.
Should they lose the #1 pick altogether, No. But to be awarded another Top 2 or top 5 pick is ridiculous. There should be a rule in place for such a scenario where the next season you get a second pick slotted before the Playoff teams pick.

Love what's going on daily- kids looking good, yet losing enough for a good pick, lately employing the '60 Yankees W.S. strategy- winning huge, then losing close, good for the kids and pitchers stats!
