If does terms are real - I have no way of knowing. Lester needs to pack his things and come back. Or maybe he doesn't want to come back which has increasingly been my feeling.

My opinion about losing our 2nd and 3rd rounds picks is this. What are the odds that those two picks end up being above average impact players for up to 5 years? It is extremely unlikely. Equal to the odds of one will be arrested? (too soon?)

“@rochiewbz: FWIW, was told Sandoval and Ramirez signings won't affect #RedSox ability or desire to re-sign Lester - Sox still want him.” O

Given that the Yankees and Dodgers have been absent from free agency, it seems like a good year to be all-in.

The sooner they lock up Lester the better. Teams are waiting to see if they wiff on him and see it the Red Sox become desperate.

One piece of this is to consider the effect of the Sandoval and Ramirez signings on Lester's perception of the Sox ability and willingness to compete. I think that's gone from a question that Lester might have had, to a very large exclamation mark with a fat yes in front of it.

Owners all want to avoid the tax until they're staring down the barrel of a 78 win team.

The market sure has changed in 2 years. It was only 2 years ago that it seemed like the Red Sox overpaid for Napoli & Victorino at $13m per year then last year it went up to $16m per for Napoli. Zack Greinke signed 2 years ago for ages 29-34 for 6 years @ $159 with an opt out after the 3rd year (2015). Now Ramirez & Sandoval are getting $20m + per year. Makes me re think what the market really is for Lester for age 31+.

Jon Heyman says it is believed Red Sox are prepared to offer 6/130~. Red Sox are also in serious discussions for Cole Hamels. Someone said they want both

Do you think that's the home town discount price or the real market value?

Owners all want to avoid the tax until they're staring down the barrel of a 78 win team. The Yankees also seemingly went extra years and extra dollars. It appears like the Sox are at least limiting the back end of the deals, and should likely avoid paying guys $20M for the last 3 years of their deals

“@mlb_nl_al: Not reporting lester to Boston done . But near accepting of terms” God, I hope so. Then trade Cespedes for a #2 and we'll have wrapped up 95% of our offseason business in one amazing 24-hour period...

Someone said they want both Can the Red Sox afford all that? They've always been able to "afford" it, but have chosen not to in order to avoid going over the luxury tax limit. That doesn't seem like a necessity anymore, so anything is truly possible

They will go over the Luxury tax regardless the would have to deal Cespedes for nothing and Victorino at full value to be under if my number are correct

Heeeeeeees back!! “@mlb_nl_al: This is going against what I said yesterday about lester. But he's close with Red Sox around 120-140 million...” If true and Lester news breaks by tomorrow then you wonder if the Hamels rumors are true as well and a deal could be reached by Wednesday. I have to say if Ben trades for Hamels he better have whittled Amaro down to a package headlined by Owens or Rodriguez and Margot because I can't imagine how bad this plays for the fans if signing Pablo pushes Bogaerts or Betts out the door.

Someone said they want both Can the Red Sox afford all that? With the $$ off the books at the end of next season, they could theoretically be over for 1 year. If Hamels is also in play, with everything else that's going on, I'd assume the Phils were eating a TON of money (which would indicate Mookie would have to be part of a deal)
