Bullpen did a great job tonight. Miller was spot on.
Ortiz looked old tonight!

So as much as we trash Farrell, take some time to read the quotes from Yost tonight. Mind blowing

What's hard to fathom is why he's perfectly willing to play the odds in some situations, and not in others. If it's all going to revolve around intuition, then why bother?
Both Ross and Gomes were candidates to be pinch-hit for. Watch an entire Oakland game sometime. They never waste the platoon advantage. It just doesn't happen.

I still think nava and carp are duplicates. I would not be opposed to trading carp and bringing up Hassan.

There is no way Mookie Betts is worse defensively than Jonny Gomes.

That's one of the things that people don't take into account when talking about why the A's have been successful. If you build the team to take advantage of platoons, you damn well better use them as close to 100% of the time, or else it's a waste. I don't buy that tonight it was because of defensive trust in Gomes over Carp/Betts because it's not close to the first time he's left Gomes in vs. a righty. He's at about a 40% k-rate vs. righties, and tonight, that's pretty much the only thing you can't do in that particular situation. There's a love there for Gomes that is unwarranted. Ya, he hit a HR earlier in the game, but it was against a lefty, so it really shouldn't play much into the late inning decision

That would mean being cold-blooded about it, understanding that Gomes' success is a one-sided affair.
The insurance run would have been a good thing to have. It didn't hurt them tonight, but that won't always be the case.

Clearly last season when Gomes posted .318 wOBA at home and a .355 wOBA on the road wasn't indicative of his true talent... Also of note: .703 career OPS at Fenway vs his .781 career OPS overall.

To be clear, the guy has his uses. He absolutely destroys lefthanded pitching. But he's generally ineffective against righthanders. The question on the table was why waste an at bat with two guys on and a one run lead in the eighth? Water under the bridge at this point.

I like Gomes a lot as both a hitter vs lefties and a good clubhouse presence (I don't know how to valuate this - but I do believe it's greater than zero). I just don't trust Farrel WITH Gomes. It's like having a girlfriend who cheated on her last boyfriend with her previous boyfriend. You may like her, you may even trust her in general, you just don't trust her with her ex-boyfriends.

Gomes certainly has his uses. But his value is mitigated by the constant use of him vs. RHP. He shouldn't have anywhere near as many AB's vs. righties as lefties, yet he does. I bet it's because last year his splits weren't drastic at all, even though almost every year of his career he's had a major LHP/RHP split advantage

Now we have to endure watching Victorino hit righty vs. RHP, too? Good gracious.

Now we have to endure watching Victorino hit righty vs. RHP, too? Good gracious. I don't really mind it all that much. He hit .300 as a righty against righties last year, and seems to have more pop (presumably because of the monster)

Now we have to endure watching Victorino hit righty vs. RHP, too? Good gracious. Is this an aesthetic problem? Because as far as baseball goes, I would argue that we do not have enough information on Victorino's RHB vs. RHP skill yet ... information we desperately need in order to plan for next year.

Holt SS Pedroia 2B Ortiz DH Napoli 1B Gomes LF Victorino RF Bogaerts 3B Bradley Jr CF Vazquez C
So JBJ ahead of Vazquez against LHP, but behind Ross against RHP. I'm sure it all makes sense in John Farrell's head.
I do like the Drew/Holt platoon at SS. Obviously there are even better things that could be done (Drew/WMB platoon ... if they ever let X play SS again), but it's better than stubbornly trotting out Drew every day, that's for sure.
Would John Farrell pinch hit Drew for Gomes? I hope so.

I would prefer him to pinch hit Nava for Gomes in that case.

But we have plenty of info on him as a LHB vs. RHP and so far it has been far superior to his performance right-handed vs. RHP.
