I'm not expecting anything exciting. I'll be happy if it's a guy we don't have to put on the 40. if it isnt anything exciting then im worried we got hosed. Don't worry. We did get hosed.

We did not get hosed, as much as it pains for me to say the Doubie Brother is not a good pitcher and a bit of a headcase.

I'm happy if we can get more than a dozen of baseballs in this deal.

I never understood why people were waiting for anything from this trade. He was dumped because he had a crap attitude and was pitching even worse than his attitude.

The dude last season only struck out 5.76 batters per nine last season while almost walking 4 per nine. I don't know how one gets hosed when the player they trade is so abjectly awful.

Had he not been traded, Doubront likely would have been non-tendered this offseason as he entered his first arb year. He had little to no trade value and certainly wasn't going to bring back anything valuable.
There is some tiny chance that he comes into next year strong and claims a rotation spot, and a somewhat likelier chance that he turns the corner as a bullpen arm who can air it out in short stints. But you'd have to pay him $3m or so to get that chance, which I'm not sure I'd have been willing to do. A team like the Cubs can take that chance on upside, but I'm not sure a contender can.

And chances are pretty damn good that we sign someone better to a minor league deal like Tommy Layne.

I guess a lot of people are unwilling to give up on the potential they see in him, but at a certain point that's just not enough to go on. He's not really that young or inexperienced anymore. He's had plenty of chances and done very little with them. Meanwhile the Red Sox have a limited number of rotation slots and a ton of pitchers with similar upside that they could potentially give them to. To top it off, the guy has an attitude problem where he doesn't want to accept a bullpen role despite the fact that he's pretty much ticketed for a DFA as a starter. There's just no value to be had in that, even if once upon a time you could squint real hard and see a number three starter there.

So when will we find out the player in the trade?

Since the usual case is to pick a player that was Rule 5 draft eligible but not on the 40 man, we can expect something along the lines of Ramos, Kurcz or Ramirez. An OK but not super prospect that isn't ready for the majors yet. The Cubs are a strong system and I'm guessing they have several reasonable prospects for Ben to chose from. Under the circumstances, I'm more than happy with that. There's no hurry, nothing is going to change by waiting, it'll get done.

Let's just hope Larry doesn't come out and tell the press that the Red Sox are expecting "significant compensation" for Doubront.

Actually I was more hopeful that Doubront isn't the PTBNL for Doubront,

I'd rather be Theo on that deal. They had 1/2 a year to try him out and now he has all of spring training to make it or break it. Even if he ends up in the pen it's probably money well invested. The return was next to nothing.

Theo isn't the GM of the Cubs. People need to stop referring to him like he is. Hoyer has a job.

I think it's safe to say that Theo has considerable input in Personnel decisions though not a GM anymore.

I think it's safe to say that Theo has considerable input in Personnel decisions though not a GM anymore. Things like the Lester budget, sure. Things like the PTBNL for Felix Doubront? I'm just speculating, but he probably lets Jed handle that sort of thing. Not a bad get for someone who had an ERA+ of 64 but felt he was above working out his problems in the bullpen.

I saw Hernandez play this past year for Daytona. I was impressed. We may have lucked out here.

Nice writeup from a Cubs fan www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2014/12/marco-hernandez-to-boston-as-ptbnl-to-boston/"The Cubs wound up giving up a pretty solid player for LHP Felix Doubront in Marco Hernandez. While I didn't have him in my top 25 prospects lists, he does have big league potential, even if his numbers and inconsistent play say otherwise. Hernandez has solid tools across the board, shows good athleticism, flows to the ball pretty well and has an above average arm, though it is not a rocket by any means. At the plate he has quick enough hands to turn on any fastball and can occasionally put a charge into a ball, but those moments are far and few between right now. He's also a very aggressive hitter, though he has made more of an effort to take pitches over the past year and a half or so. Hernandez likely needs to add some strength as he moves up the ladder. He had frequent laps of concentration but showed some improvement last year in Daytona. I think the most likely outcome is utility infielder unless the bat comes around and he has the athleticism and speed to play multiple positions. Solid value to get a true SS. For the Cubs, this position has become surplus as he has been passed by Gleyber Torres as the Cubs best long term shortstop. It also means the Cubs won't have to make a roster decision on him next year."

This is way more than I thought they were going to get for him.
They traded Doubront to get him off the roster because he was being a malcontent and pitching like crap.
