This is the Ohtani thread and Stanton/Bour discussion should go elsewhere. Thanks.

Here we go. Joel Sherman was just reporting that Ohtani will be posted on December 2nd and Ohtani will have until December 23rd to sign with a team.
Let the Ohtani speculation and rumors officially begin.

Gee, a Yankee source posting what they "hear" from scouts. The Yankees and their fans think they're getting every player. This is no surprise. I bet this same source said the same thing about Moncada.
Complete non story here.

If I was betting I'd let you have the field and I'd take NY I would take that bet all day long. No way the Yankees chances are above 50%. Not when the contract doesn't matter. They might be the favourites, but that doesn't mean much, when taking the field. Just that the field is better than 50%.

Everything he's said/done would seemingly lean towards someone other than NY signing him. But if they agree to let him hit & pitch, offer him the most money, and convince him it's a place where he can win right away, they're still the prohibitive favorite.
That said, if my options were the field vs. NYY right now, I'd take the field. That doesn't necessarily mean I think he'll sign elsewhere, but there's more than enough reason to not just assume he's going to end up in pinstripes

From a playing standpoint you can actually make a huge point to say that the Yankees are a awful fit for Ohtani.
Right handed power pitchers don't tend to thrive in New York if they don't get a lot of ground balls. Just look at Pineda. A power right handed pitcher who had the stuff to be a number 2 type of starter, but couldn't because of the ballpark. Between the RF and the juiced ball, I don't know why any pitcher would want to pitch there outside of money.
Ohtani might hit a few more homeruns at Yankee Stadium, but he might not be a great hitter regardless. He'll get a chance to hit, but he belongs on the mound. His future in the MLB is on the mound. You can't be sure of saying that with his bat.
On the other hand, look at Fenway. Fenway has been a platform for right handed power pitchers. Pedro, Clemens, and Beckett at times. Fenway is actually a perfect fit for Ohtani.

I wonder if the market is just waiting on Otani. This has been the quietest November I can remember.

i am surprised that folks think the MFY's aren't the prohibitive favorite here. I haven't kept up with a much about this guy or this situation, but don't the MFY have some advantages with IFA money available. Also, as I understand it, he has to get paid with the regular draft construct, so that hurts other clubs.
Couple that with their SP need, non-baseball income opportunities for the player, and their historical Japanese player acquisitions.....I think they are at least 50/50.
Really, i think Japanese (Asian) players are very good, but I don't see worrying about 1 of those guys wrecking the competitive balance between clubs. They really haven't been that exceptional, on the whole.

Thinking he's a Yankee. He slots right in perfectly where Sabathia is leaving. They'll have a DH spot waiting for him as well on off days. This is the guy who the Sox should have been planning for. The Sox should be trying to find international bonus money wherever possible. Even if it means selling off guys on the roster like Holt Brentz Marrero and other fringe pieces. Someone is bound to pay. Hell I'd trade Hanley's entire poisonous contract for a minimal amount of international pool cash. This guy is going to be great.

Was your only reason for this post to bash the front office? Is that the only tune you know? I don't always agree with their moves, but if you've been paying any attention at all you know that Ohtani's motivation isn't international pool cash. If you've read up his agent has given all interested teams six issues to write about and none of it has to do with money, and $ amounts are not to be discussed. As far as "planning for" what in the hell does that mean? I think he's going to NY, but he's going to go to the team that does the best answering his concerns, etc. You can't "plan" for it. You do the best recruiting job you can do and hope he picks you. Nobody can "plan" for his signing. That's silly. I hope and think the Sox give their max effort, and I don't know why they wouldn't, but you can't be mad if he doesn't choose to go there. Fit is a big thing and the Sox need a ton of production out of DH - some here disagree but I think the Sox need to essentially replace David Ortiz. It's not known if they can afford to gamble on Ohtani's bat which has question marks. They could certainly, like everybody else, use him in the rotation. If the Sox sign Ohtani and DH that means Hanley at 1b or they have to sign a lesser 1b to platoon with Hanley or sign Hosmer or Santana. They wouldn't be able to sign JD Martinez unless they play him in LF. The Yankees could simply slide Ohtani into the DH spot and DH Sanchez on the days Ohtani pitches. It's an easier fit for NY, not that I want them to get him, but they can sell the idea of him getting more playing time as a hitter than the Sox can.

Its been common knowledge he was getting posted this year since 2015. So yes, they had 2 years to plan for him.

I'm also confused on what "prepared for him" actually means.
The guy is passing up an opportunity to earn a $200M contract, but the FO should get bashed for not saving a couple extra million? Doesn't seem very logical to me...
He's either going to sign with the Sox or he isn't. A few extra million won't sway him one way or the other.

What you're saying makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. In fact, The Sox have had warm relations with Ohtani since High School, continuing today. The Sox are not out of the picture. He would fit well with the Sox in the rotation and would "platoon" at DH with Hanley or Brentz. 1B would go to, hopefully, Santana. That would be a great team. DD could also bring back Koji or Juni Tazawa as mentor and guide, to be an assistant pitching coach/player and pitch a bit to justify a player's salary.

I feel like no one has any indication of what Ohtani wants to do and are simply speculating on what each team can offer and picking the favorite destinations based on that.

I think having a chance to be a starter, which won't be an issue for any teams, AND the chance to hit the other days will be a major selling point to him. A team has to have that type of opening - and yes this is speculation on my part because nobody else knows what he'd going to do.
I think there's a good consensus that he can step into the rotation and be a front-line starter, but there's a lot of questions about how productive a hitter he is going to be. I'm sure he'd be a great hitter - for a pitcher, but the question is would he be a good enough hitter to be the DH? Is he good enough to dislodge Hanley if Hanley is healthy?
Some might consider this a good thing, but I think getting Ohtani takes them out of the JD Martinez sweepstakes. This would push the Red Sox into signing Eric Hosmer, or Carlos Santana, or less likely a lesser talent at 1b.

An Ohtani-Hanley/Brentz "platoon" at DH + Ohtani in the Rotation + returns and salary relief from trading Porcello + Santana at 1B on a reasonable short term contract > an unreasonable long term $200M contract for my former favorite, JDM.
