Red Sox reportedly re-sign Craig Breslow for $2m

It's fantasy but from BP (coincidentally posted): Baseball Prospectus ?@baseballpro 1h1 hour ago Getting to Know: Catcher Prospects - @cdgoldstein on Blake Swihart, Andrew Susac, Austin Hedges, and others www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=25302 … Blake Swihart, Red Sox He won’t start the year in the big leagues, but Swihart is the most worthy of “best fantasy catching prospect for 2015.” He’s close enough to the majors that a strong start from him coupled with non-production or injury to Christian Vazquez could result in playing time, and he’s talented enough not to relinquish a huge portion of that playing time. A switch-hitter, Swihart hasn’t hit below .290 since 2012, and packs enough pop to project double-digit home runs over the course of a full season. Vazquez is more than a stopgap to overcome during 2015, but Swihart is the future behind the plate in Boston. That future won’t make an appearance ‘til the second half, if the Sox can help it, though.Interesting last sentence which returns us to the Butler decision. Maybe I'm missing something, but what is interesting in there? There is nothing in that that hasn't been said here pretty much unanimously.

The impact of DFAing Butler which was the general topic and potentially being in a position where they have to call up Swihart.

The impact of DFAing Butler which was the general topic and potentially being in a position where they have to call up Swihart. I don't think this is a major consideration. By the time that happens there will have been other injuries and a guy like Montz could be added to the 40 and called up if they deem it is detrimental to rush Swihart.

Yup always a good idea to count on somebody being on the 60 day DL early in the season.
SoxSignatures above has it nailed.

The difference between dan butler and a replacement level catcher as a backup for a few weeks is almost nothing. A small fraction of a win at best.
Now in regards to having a third catcher on the 40 man, that is a different issue. Even if Butler clears waivers and is out righted, you're still in a position where you're "counting on someone being on the 60 day DL" in order to call him up.
The team is simply doing the calculus that the ability to wait on having to cut someone else - and in all likely hood not having to at all (because we're assuming an early season injury here) is more valuable than dan butler versus random replacement level catcher X.

Your 1st argument is a strawman, I don't see a single post by anybody saying otherwise. The second part is the discussion we're having. It seems that with over 2 weeks to work with, the Sox could have come up with a trade from our excesses, to me, right handed relievers specifically, that would make this a situation that doesn't exist. On the other hand, if they weren't able to find a trade (presumably for a lottery ticket) and hypothetically, the Sox DFAed Sprull, they would have been DFAing somebody where the Sox are pretty much stacked (right handed relievers) and the net cost of signing Breslow would have been Miles Smith. That's under the assumption that we couldn't get back a Miles Smith for Sprull and if we couldn't get back a Miles Smith, what's he really worth ? Look at our pen as it stands, locks or no options which means we can't shift these guys between Boston and Pawtucket: Koji Mujica Tazawa Varvaro Breslow Britton That leaves 1 slot for Wright, Workman, Sprull, Hinojosa, Celestino, Hembree and lefties Escobar & Layne. (Yes I know there will be injuries and Britton is show me.)

It was an observation and my opinion. That isn't a straw man. At the end of the day I just don't think Butler was worth keeping on the 40. The fractional chance he's needed before Swihart is ready times the marginal upgrade over random guy X just isn't worth much at all.

Ah OK, I took at as representing a debate point against people that think Butler's value is higher than it is for the Sox and some are on the other side of the equation that the fractional risk wasn't the best option.
LOL, next topic. I'll be willing to bet that the hot topic for the whole season will be what we do with Swihart/Vazquez next off season.
Also you quoted that before I could fix Celestino's name. A mistake I make almost every time I type it.

Pitchers and catchers in a little more than a month.
