The heck with keeping Swihart at AAA for 12 games/days/whatever and only thinking about finances. Keep him at AAA until after the All-Star break and get him the development time he needs. Catch Hanigan 50 games, Quintero 40. Then bring up Swihart after the AS break and let him catch 50 of the last 70, with Hanigan catching the rest. The issue isn't whether Hanigan can catch more than 80 games. The issue is whether or not he can catch at a pace slightly more intensive than that FOR HALF A YEAR. If Swihart is then ready to be brought up, Hanigan won't catch more than 80 games on the season. Give Swihart his proper seasoning. If his absence before the AS break costs the Sox 2 or 3 games so be it. If those 2 or 3 games are the difference between the Sox making and not making the playoffs this year, so be it. Handle this kid right. This is all I'm saying. Swihart's decision shouldn't be based on manipulating his service time. It should be based on his development.

Why are people making this out to be some kind of Telemundo drama? Swihart isn't represented by Boras. Now if he was then that would be an entirely different story. In that case, you absolutely would keep Swihart down for at least two months so that you not only keep him from gaining a year of service time but also strip him of Super Two status. And if Boras clients (are you listening Kris Bryant?) don't like being treated that way, then there's a simple solution - Don't pick Boras to represent you.

They do that to everyone regardless of agent. But sorry, this is the CBA that everyone agreed to. It's perfectly within the rules and it should always be used. I want Swihart's age 29 season to be his 3rd arb year.

But sorry, this is the CBA that everyone agreed to. Yeah, everyone. Well except the minor leaguers who are affected by it but they don't count.

I DO NOT WANT
1- Quintero catching 1/3 of the games and not sure Swihart is ready
2- Mujica closing
3- Victorino starting and Castillo in AAA or bench
I think these are much more pressing matters than worrying about Cole hamels. Ben better be making some moves ASAP.

Obviously not, but this is what those who make the decisions agreed to. You can't whine about having your service time screwed with, any more than the Phillies owners can whine about paying Ryan Howard.

Its looking like a bridge year to get us back to contention. Which is fine with me if we don't make any poor trades. First rule - do no harm.

Are we positive Vazquez is out for the year? Speier's article in the Globe today seemed like a short term DL stint was still a possible outcome, but here the tone seems to be that it is 100% certain he needs TJ.

Sit and rest is delaying the inevitable. If there is a tear? Get it fixed now and don't delay it.

Susac was optioned. That doesn't mean he is available, but he would be a good backup option with some salvage value once swihart is ready and Vazquez is healthy.

If Vazquez can get through this season or even part of this season, he might not end up missing much time.

It's less, but it's still about nine months. Matt Wieters had his in June last year and won't be ready by Opening Day this year. It's not something that you can just take care of during the offseason and not miss much time. The worst-case scenario would be if Vazquez rehabs for six weeks, but that doesn't take and he ends up needing surgery in June/July. That would mean he ends up missing all of 2015 anyways, but it would also place the start of 2016 at risk.

Wieters made it into only 26 games last year and he will not be ready for opening day. Whatever Dr Andrews says is what it will be. Unfortunatly that is probably tommy john. How do you think the Yankees will feel when Tanaka struggles through this year that ends in TJ and then has to miss next season.

Just a thought from yesterday's game - I am not saying he is going to have the same career as this guy but Brian Johnson kind of reminds me of David Wells. I think it's his over the top delivery and his breaking ball. I don't think he will ever have the career Wells had but he just reminds me of him. I think Johnson is going to be a guy that gives you 200+ innings every year.

With the the gloomy Vazquez situation and the news of the Leon trade, I created a new thread. Let's try to keep all the catching discussion there.

Michael Silverman reports that the sky may be falling in, " Red Sox problems increasing as season draws near." Nut graf: Am I alone in thinking that list is sorta lame? Backup catcher, which order 3/4 will start the season, back end of the bullpen, and whether one of your 5/6 outfielders is healthy enough is a pretty manageable list of concerns. Really, Christian Vazquez's injury is the only significant downside to this spring to me (and it is significant). There's this media chatter that this spring hasn't gone that well (Concerns Mount!), but I don't see it. To me, the biggest things to watch for were: Clay Buchholz in general, Masterson's velocity and power, Pedroia's power on inside pitches, Mookie, Hanley in left, Bogaerts defense, Castillo's performance, Ogando's fastball, and, somewhat secondarily, health of Craig and Victorino. Out of all of those, Masterson is the only one that really concerns me now, and only Victorino's health and Bogaerts defense give me any pause at all beyond that. Bogaerts defense looks better in some ways than before, but I've thought he's looked erratic out there. And Victorino's health doesn't really bother me because they have so many replacements. Kelly's neither here nor there, about what I expected. Generally, I think the team looks like what we all expected: a really powerhouse set of position players with a rotation that may or may not be good enough. But I think overall the developments have been on the positive side of the ledger. edit to add: Koji's health is an obvious potential concern I didn't list, but I'm just not that worried about it yet ... although I may be.

Historically the Red Sox have liked Chris Perez, does he have anything left? Just released by the Brewers and had a decent Spring.

You're not. Silverman just needs something to write about. It is his job, after all. In order: - The Sox have a backup catcher, they just acquired one. Add: They'll also have what is acknowledged to be one of the top catching prospects in the minors in AAA.
- 4th/5th starters are backend guys and the team has go to options in Wright and Johnson to name two, and they don't even need a 5th right now.
- Victorino is a political problem not a logistical one with the Sox having four other viable options, some a good bet to out-WAR him.
- This is redundant. For the health of the 5th starter, see item 2.
- The Sox could use Tazawa as their closer tomorrow and barely miss a beat, so under-rated is the guy. The closer mentality thing is vastly overblown.
Here's the thing: the Sox might even be better if some of these options play out. That's what having depth means. Like I said, talking heads gotta talk.

Yeah, you look at the Red Sox problems and how they compare to the problems of other teams in the AL East and they barely compare.
I mean at least we don't have Stephen Drew penciled in as our starting 2B and are worried about who is going to replace Chris Capuano as our 5th starter. And we're not counting on James Loney to be a middle of the order bat.

Like I said, talking heads gotta talk. Absolutely. Of course, while I agree Tazawa would be a fine closer, he probably wouldn't be setting himself up as well, so it does weaken the bullpen overall. But I'm sure that will sort itself out, and if it turns out we need someone for the 7th inning before the trade deadline, well, the Astros store is always open.

But I'm sure that will sort itself out, and if it turns out we need someone for the 7th inning before the trade deadline, well, the Astros store is always open. Plus, there's Hinojosa, Escobar, and Barnes at AAA that all may be solid options by then ... I'm really not worried about the bullpen, even if Koji takes some time off. Mujica's probably an ok "closer" in the "pitches the 9th inning but isn't really your best reliever" sense of the word. Tazawa and Ogando hold down the 8th and key situations, and the rest of the guys slot into their roles as needed. It's still a potentially pretty good bullpen when Koji's on the DL and better than that when he isn't. The bullpen will be a problem if the starters don't do their job, which is entirely possible. Really, though, Norm's point is the right one ... there's really not much to talk about with this team, and the beast needs to get fed. Stories need to get written, calls to the radio show need to get generated ... saying "well, nothing much has changed in our view of this team" is pretty boring. This is why I like Speier. He's not really the greatest writer, honestly, but he is smart and takes a much different slant to things, looking to explore and elucidate rather than just creating nonsense.

Yeah, Hinojosa is easily my number one pick for "player without a ZiPS or Steamer projection who is most likely to help the Red Sox this season."
