Plus there will likely be trades. It always looks like that this time of year but it never seems to work out. De La Rosa, Webster, Ranaudo, and Middlebrooks were traded this season for players who better fit the major league roster. In general, we spend more time worrying about the back end of the roster than it probably deserves. The 39th or 40th guy on the roster is rarely important enough that it makes a big difference whether they should DFA Heath Hembree in order to protect Pat Light or not, especially a year ahead of time. And this is coming from a guy who defended to the death Alex Hassan and Dan Butler and Tommy Layne over Breslow/Britton.

Looks like the Sox released Nick Moore I understand it's but too bad just the same. Saw him a couple times for Lowell and at spring training last year. Liked his glove and smart base running. Had what I thought was a good hitting approach. Was hoping he'd grow to handle the more quality offerings. Good luck to him.

From Alex's 108 Stitches today (since I'm basically promoting signing up for his newsletter, I think it's fine to post this portion of it): Interesting... Totally forgotten player, which isn't all that surprising given his results (lack thereof), possibly due to being pretty raw out of Monmouth. Gotta love the velo, especially as a starter. If the CH and SL go anywhere, this could get interesting... He seems like such a sure shot for the 'pen, but I really hope he gets as many starts (and reps) as possible. Fingers crossed that he starts missing bats this summer.

Are Greenville and Pawtucket the only 2 affiliates to have their own broadcasting TV crews this season? Looked over the schedule/site at Milb and seems that way again. Was hoping another would get added instead of having to catch either audio only, or opponent fees when they are available.

Why is Keivin Heras on the restricted list?

Any insights as to why Whitson and Mars remain in XST? Assume this is just temporary and a move to Greenville is likely in the offing for one or both?

A couple of other minor questions and comments (pun intended):
- Any reason to believe that Cuevas will start at Portland ahead of Mercedes? - A little surprised to see that Bryan Hudson is not joining Greenville, although he didn't exactly light Lowell on fire last year. - I optimistically hoped we would see Cosart in Greenville, but I get it, he's raw. - That Greenville infield is so stacked. I wonder if one other alternative to Devers and Chavis sharing the DH role, would be to get Longhi some time in a corner OF position and let Devers play some first. I realize we want Devers to get as much 3B time in as possible, but I feel it would be better to see him 3B/1B than 3B/DH. Of course rest as necessary.

In turn:
1) Saw in a box score in mid-to-late ST that Mercedes worked 1 inning after the starter worked four followed by another guy working three. He's a bullpen arm in the long run and had issues with health and maintaining mechanics last year. Make the move now, get him on the fast track. But to make sure we're clear her, it's not in deference to Cuevas - it's Mercedes being put in position to succeed. (Side note: I think Cuevas is keeping a spot warm for Gunkel, who could move quick if he shoves in Salem.) 2) I'm not surprised. 3) I think I agree. We had him pegged for Lowell, but could've seen GNV. 4) I like that idea a lot... next year in Salem. Could happen later this year though. Anther possibility - I wonder if, say, Guerra is up only until Moncada is ready? Reward him for a good camp with some time in full-season? Credit to Ian for that one.

Why is Keivin Heras on the restricted list? Trying to figure out how to put this publicly, but let's say that it appears his heart's not in playing any more. Basically, consider him retired. EDIT: just to make sure nobody gets the wrong idea, no legal trouble or anything.

Looking the team rosters and as weak as the team looks Portland might have a handful of future MLBers when you consider how some of those guys might pan out in the pen. I'm very curious to see what Light and Mercedes can do in bullpen.

I'm very curious to see what Light and Mercedes can do in bullpen. Agreed. As I said on Twitter, I like the Portland bullpen better than any of the other three, assuming Mercedes is moving. Of course, that's such a 2015 Portland Sea Dogs thing, it's hilarious.

I'm very curious to see what Light and Mercedes can do in bullpen. Agreed 100% Looking forward to seeing how well both do in a relief role, how much velocity increases, as well as if they can maintain said velocity throughout the season. Another high velocity reliever am looking forward to seeing this season is Jorge Marban. Those that watched the Aussie championship series may have noticed how well his mid-upper 90's FB, plus nasty splitter looked vs the iffy talent in that league. Am looking forward to see how it plays up in High-A Ball and hopefully Portland later on in 2015.
